Keep her away from grassy knolls.

Blandmum · 20/05/2008 19:12

and if that is what you want to do shouldn't it be kenidi?

Don't like it, and I think that spelling looks daft

ElizabethBeresford · 20/05/2008 19:12

Actually, just throwing this in as a suggestion... Tegan would go well with Jaden and Teylor and Stefan... but it is an attractive name (unlike Kennedi)

tegan · 20/05/2008 19:12

ok does this help.

Teagan spelt Tegan
Sydney spelt sidney

whats wrong with that.

muggglewump · 20/05/2008 19:13

You named your kids so they could spell them when they are 4?
Did you not consider the rest of their lives having to correct people?
I don't think you thought that through too well

DarthVader · 20/05/2008 19:13

My dd (aged 8) says Kennedy sounds like a boy's name but Kennedina is quite a fun name and kids will like it because it sounds quite funky.

Moomin · 20/05/2008 19:14

2nd spelling of it that you suggested reminds me of Kenickie from Grease.

Don't like it. and like even less with the bonkers spelling. (you did ask)

DarthVader · 20/05/2008 19:14

Sydney and Sidney are both phonetic spellings so no different in that respect but I would assume Sidney is a boy and Sydney a girl.

noanonimityjustonce · 20/05/2008 19:14

Well I have a ds with a surname called Carter and another with an unusual name(but not silly) Roman and then I have a daughter called Mabel...... perhaps you could find another name that doesn't look like you looked in a phone directory rather than a names book!!
I have dug some out....
beginning with Girls names for popular girls (according to the book!)
Ava, Clancy, Coby, Coco (love it), Lexi, London (??), Morgan, Madison, Piper, Reese, Skye, Serena,

pootleflump · 20/05/2008 19:15

I don't think your spellings are bad actually Tegan, I'd have thought they are 'proper' alternatives.

Quattrocento · 20/05/2008 19:16

What on earth are you talking about?

The name Sidney is actually Sidney?

Do you mean that you named your child Sydney and then changed the spelling to Sidney?

You are doing my head in.

Unless did you mean that you've got a girl called Sidney?

You are bonkerz

hermykne · 20/05/2008 19:16

its a non name as far as i am concerned sorry to be so forthright but i m sure a kennedy would be too.

there are many more nicer names

posieparker · 20/05/2008 19:17

Noanon. Tell me that book is american... I think I have it!!! It also has lists for Artist names and names that will get you bullied!!

dizzydixies · 20/05/2008 19:17

whatever happened to a polite 'its not to my taste'???

minipink if you like it go for it, she will make it her own whatever you call her

world would be a VERY boring place if we were all called the same/wore the same had the same taste

ignore rude comments and take on board the ones you want to

tegan · 20/05/2008 19:19

DD2 is named Sidney on her birth certificate.

Yes i have a girl called Sidney, and the problem is??

Quattrocento · 20/05/2008 19:19

Oh polite/shmolite

Why bother saying it's not to my taste (as many posters have, adding the not-so-subtle "but it fits so well with your other name choices")? When instead you can say forthrightly that the name's ghastly?

DarthVader · 20/05/2008 19:20

I thought Sidney was the spelling for a boy and Sydney for a girl?

dizzydixies · 20/05/2008 19:21

because you are talking about the name that someone is considering giving to their BABY and if you can't say something nice then at least be polite about it

sorry, I was just raised with manners, my bad obviously

Moomin · 20/05/2008 19:23

Agree with Quattro. It's only what many people will think throughout her life (incl teachers when they see the new class lists for the year).

If you're still OK with that thought, then go for it. If you're getting upset at some of the comments then you might want to think again. If you're absolutely stuck on Kennedy and you like it, then go for it. Opinions are just that - people's personal points of view and they were asked for, to be fair.

DarthVader · 20/05/2008 19:23

tegan I now think I am wrong about that having just googled it

Quattrocento · 20/05/2008 19:24

Well one of the things that a name does is set up gender expectations.

Take the name Emma. You see it, you expect a girl.

Take the name Sidney. Perfectly respectable name. You see it, you expect a boy.

I imagine having a wrong-sex name is the type of thing that can have quite a profound effect on children. Could make a girl very girly to repudiate the name.

I am off to rechristen my tomboy girl Frank to see what happens to her.

Moomin · 20/05/2008 19:25

I've heard one of my dds's name called 'twee' and 'common' (as on over-popular) on MN before now but it doesn't bother me because 1) I never asked for anyone's two-penneth 2) I love the name so much and it totally suits her.

TheFallenMadonna · 20/05/2008 19:26

Nah. There are plenty of names that will do either sex. And it's not a new thing either. I think people have been unnecessarily rude TBH. But then why anyone would post their name choices on here is beyond me...

dizzydixies · 20/05/2008 19:28

am with you fallenmadonna plenty of names can be used for either sex and certainly won't be posting my choices on here for those to slate it just because they can

constructive critism fine, rudeness - no need

Hulababy · 20/05/2008 19:28

One of my clients today was male and he was called Sydney. I also thought it was the female version - but I wasn't going to mention it to the tall, broad strapping man in front of me, lol!
