ickle.

what's wrong with real forenames?

tegan · 20/05/2008 18:33

I have unussual names for my girls and i see nothing wrong with adjusting a name or even creating a new one.

I think the trick is to have a name that flows with the surname.

what about megan instead.

that would go with your other names.

and isn't so ahem, controversial.

bidibidi · 20/05/2008 18:42

Kennedi is too much like another name you already have (MacKenzie).

Quattrocento · 20/05/2008 18:46

It is a labelling name. I really tried to find names that were essentially classless. I have no idea where/what my DCs will do with their lives, but it can't be easy to live on a council estate with the name Tarquin. Equally difficult to imagine a judge called Kennedi though.

NurkMagiggy · 20/05/2008 18:48

Did you say Devon?

tegan · 20/05/2008 18:49

Why worry what your dc's profession will be as long as you can picture your child as a teenager, adult and oap with that name and it fits all 3 does it really matter if they empty bins or perform brain surgery.

HonoriaGlossop · 20/05/2008 18:50

Kennedy is not a nice name at all, and Kennedi is worse, just silly I'm afraid.

NurkMagiggy · 20/05/2008 18:52

MiniScottish, hope you're not too upset by these comments, nobody liked my children's names either, but I went ahead regardless. I get asked if it's too late to change it

DarthVader · 20/05/2008 18:55

This name will label your child, as you can see from the reactions here. There will be a lot of associations that come with the name. However, your other name choices suggest that you are somebody who doesn't like fade into the background names!

I think that if you choose an unusual spelling a lot of people will assume you are a mother who can't spell very well!

tegan · 20/05/2008 18:58

That is not a nice thing to say darth. I have changed the spellings of my dd's names to make it easier for when they are at school and are learning to write.

PosieParker · 20/05/2008 19:00

It goes with the other names, I hate silly spellings though as your poor child will have a lifetime of having to spell her names.
I think there is a danger in creating children with 'theme' names, most of yours seem to be of the same ilk which are surnames and therefore lose any originality you may be trying to create.

DarthVader · 20/05/2008 19:01

No offence intended, just stating an honest opinion

DarthVader · 20/05/2008 19:04

how can you change the spellings of your kids' names - do you mean temporarily or permanently, tegan? I am confused.

tegan · 20/05/2008 19:06

dh chose names he liked and i took letters out and changed letters so they are spelt as they sounded when they are said

DarthVader · 20/05/2008 19:08

eg changing Matthew to MAthew? Is that what you mean?

warthog · 20/05/2008 19:08

sorry, i'm not keen on it.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 20/05/2008 19:09

Like the majority, I think it's awful. As for the suggested spellings, they make me think of the Tom Lehrer joke about the child of pretentious parents whose name was spelt Hen3ry because the 3 was silent.

Where can I subscribe to the campaign for real first (not necessarily Christian) names?

2point4kids · 20/05/2008 19:09

Goes well with your other names, but you HAVE to spell it properly!!!

HonoriaGlossop · 20/05/2008 19:09

I don't think what Darth said was not nice - perfectly reasonable, and true statements!

pootleflump · 20/05/2008 19:09

I'm sorry Tegan, but that is not going to help your dc to spell their names. What it will do is have them spend the rest of their lives having to (incorrectly) spell it for people.

wordgirl · 20/05/2008 19:10

How bizarre tegan. Or should that be bizar?

Quattrocento · 20/05/2008 19:11

The point many of us are trying to make Mini is that the name Kennedy (and worse still Kennedi) sets up an automatic association in people's minds, and it's not a good association.

It was Hifi who said "chavtastic" which is entirely politically incorrect but hit the nail on the head.
