Rosette is a name. Do you know the opera by Massenet?

Manon?
Are you seriously suggesting Pousette, Javotte and Rosette are actually girls names?

Calliopespa · 12/04/2025 06:23

Yes Manon. And no, I’m not suggesting Poussette or Javotte are girls names ( poussette means pushchair ) but Rosette can be. It is used as a name for a rosette as in the ribbon but it’s just a diminutive form of the French rose, which is both a flower and a colour ( pink) - so fairly appropriate for what op is wanting. As a word for a rose shaped emblem, it is also used for rosettes in architecture, particularly Georgian, so it’s not just for horses and politicians. It just refers to the rose shape and is ( albeit rarely but we are scraping here) used as a name. For example the sculptor Rosette Bir. I think it’s less used in English as it has other connotations. But that doesn’t stop it being a name.

This thread is hilarious, wonder if the OP knew it would go this way!

I had to come back to comment as I can’t now read other threads without putting ‘ette’ at the end of every word!

When I was 7 I said I wanted to have 3 little girls when I grew up and I would call them April, May and June. Thankfully I grew up 🤣

Me, too. Kitchenette, Cassette, Layette, Cigarette, Bassinette - oh, but they’re not colours, are they? I hope OP is taking this thread well because it cries out for ridicule. Why name children as if they are pets? I knew a woman who had 2 poodles called Whisky and Soda…mmmm ok. Another who had 2 goldfish Ronnie and Reggie which is ok because goldfish don’t know they’re called anything. But naming children like this? 🙄

Riversof0tter5 · 12/04/2025 09:09

Naming children…
The family who decided ABCD for their children's names in order (Asher, Brandon, Courtney, Dwayne)
Long time ago children named Cortina or Sierra because Car related origin story
Siblings all given the same first name after their father
Babies named after a midwife
Babies named after popstars, Royals or minor celebrities
Quirky spellings, hybrid names, something heard somewhere thought it was a good idea eg Nevaeh, Purple, Zowie

Tip of the iceberg if you ask me.

Daisymae23 · 12/04/2025 10:00

Raclette…a bit cheesy, I know 😂😂😂

The one about a horse?

Tis true - except we're working class, so we just called our DD Dobinette. We know our place.

Did you ever take your fourth DD - little February - to be checked by the GP, to see if there was a reason why she was shorter than average?

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 12/04/2025 10:33

That was... an interesting choice; but not as weird as the fact that there are numerous children in the USA (and maybe further afield too) with the name Abcde - pronounced Bohemian AB-sid-ee.

The craze never quite took off as massively as Nevaeh did, but it certainly made its mark.

I was in teaching for many years. In the days when we got hard copies of our class lists there would be a silence as we scanned the first names… Steven, Matthew, Sarah, Michael, Jane … all good.
Then someone would groan and say “Oh no! I’ve got a Betty Blue/Skylette/Rocko!” Often meant trouble.

But in fairness it isn’t like that, and Ivthink people are overdoing the ridicule on this thread even though some of it was funny.

Its not as though she is calling them “ Yin and Yang” or “ Red, White and Blue” ( la Famille Tricolore! 🇫🇷

As I understand it, these are just middle names. So all you would see on your class list would be, say, “ Kate, Amelia and Sarah.” And together they would be something like Kate Scarlett, Amelia Violette and Sarah Rosette. Scarlett and Violet are perfectly pretty, non-eyebrow-raising middle names and will only really be heard by people other than them when each girl gets christened or married - and that’s in isolation from the other two. So it just isn’t the hilarious matchy-matchy exercise people are making it out to be.

That said, on balance op I would let the idea of another colour drop and go for Harriet. I love Harriet.
