Sibling for Cassiopeia

BeBlueShaker · 06/04/2025 10:37

Already have a Cassiopeia Pearl who goes by Cassie, what would you name her sibling? (we don't know the gender yet)

I'm currently loving the nickname Queenie but am looking for a more formal name, so far have Quinn and Juno (which means queen)

Other names we have been considering:

  • Beauregard/Beaumont nickname Bowie
  • Nicodemus nickname Nico
  • Hugo
  • Roman
  • Kit (as a nickname)
  • Eden
  • Indigo
  • Gwendolen nickname gwennie

Some really unnecessary comments about an existing child's name.

Queenie - not a fan
Juno - fine

Jessamine from PP is really nice.

Beauregard/Beaumont nickname Bowie - not a fan
Nicodemus nickname Nico - fine
Hugo - fine
Roman - ok
Kit (as a nickname) - great as a nn for Christopher
Eden - fine
Indigo - fine
Gwendolen nickname gwennie - not a fan

Suggestions:
Penelope (Penny, Nell)
Persephone (Sephy, Percy)
Seraphina (Fi, Sephy)
Pasiphaë
Calliope
Mirabel
Esmeralda (Esmé)
Tristan
Rollo

I've met kids called Hugo, Roman, Eden, Nico, Kit, Juno at playgroups etc, not particularly off the wall choices. I've met more than one Atlas and a Zephyr too! Names are more adventurous these days.

Yup I agree. Names of children declared to be existing need to be left alone.

In any case, I genuinely quite like Cassiopeia.

I mostly agree this posters “ticks and crosses” on the list above except Pasiphae which I think has overtones I’m not too keen on. Really like some of the other suggestions though.

I’m surprised people think the child would have a difficult life. The most my friend Cassiopeia has got is mild surprise when people realise what Cassie is short for. She’s done well at work and in life in general.

It’s wasn’t Cassie it was the other choices….

Marmalade71 · 06/04/2025 19:28

These names aren’t to my taste for sure but…fucking hell the snobbery on this thread!
Know your place OP 🤪

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 06/04/2025 19:32

I seem to remember the nice hearing that JK Rowling used to put unusual names in one jar and unusual last names in another and pulled them out for her Harry Potter books (some names are obviously ‘normal’ like Harry.).

But I feel like this is an exercise on how to name your fictional character child rather than an actual person who has to live with this name their whole lives.

Most of these names are dreadful and don’t sound middle class to me but hoppy, try hard and a bit crazy.

BuntyBeaufort · 06/04/2025 19:42

I knew a couple of Queenies - one, who was elderly in the 1960s was Victoria, and the other was Elizabeth.
But it looks as though they would be a bit mundane for your taste.

caringcarer · 06/04/2025 19:47

Queenie is often a nickname for Elizabeth, or Victoria as bothnames of Queens.

nativityhelp · 06/04/2025 20:01

I was about to suggest Juno. Fabulous name.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/04/2025 20:41

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 06/04/2025 17:49

This could take off.

Vespasian has a ring to it. Nickname Vespa, natch.

I would suggest Severus, but then we'd get all the 'parents must be a Harry Potter' fan problems.

Calliopespa · 06/04/2025 21:44

Has anyone suggested Quentina for a girl op?

Traditionally it would be a fifth daughter but Quentin gets used regardless. I actually love it. I think sits very well with Cassiopeia ( same level of unusual but not outrageous name, pretty but not sappy) and shortens very naturally to Queenie.

SawItOnTikTok · 07/04/2025 07:04

I wonder how many people suggesting these ridiculous names would change their own name to them instead of saddling a child with them

Yerdug · 07/04/2025 07:13

Yes. She said it out loud. Got to be a wind up!

TENSsion · 07/04/2025 07:24

The reverse snobbery on here is appalling.

There’s also Quinton for a boy

The reverse snobbery on here is appalling.

I don’t believe there is a single boy in Eton or Harrow called Beauregard. Much less with the nn Bowie.

I’m also willing to wager that Queenies are thin on the ground at CLC and Roedean.

Where do you think “reverse snobbery” comes into it?

I’m not sure Eton is much of a posh litmus tbh! More highly ambitious families than posh these days!

But I do agree Beauregard as a first name is not a choice you stumble on much anywhere; I’ve only known it as a place name or Violet Beauregard as a surname in Roald Dahl!

I think the reverse snobbery is people suggesting names like Cassiopeia ( which I think is actually pretty and perfectly serviceable) are a bit “Hyacinth Bouquet.”

The only names I think “go too far” on here are things like Napoleon which patently refer to a mighty ruler. Even things like Julius or Augustus are names in themselves and perfectly fine on their own I think because they get used as a given name more often.

To be honest my initial take was that op was indulging in a little reverse snobbery but actually it’s only really Beauregard on her list that was a bit suspect - and people do seem keen to work a Dukes of Hazard style Beau in these days. Nicodemus is a fine name, well due a revival as the nice but overused Nicolas ( in my childhood!) and the trendy Nico circulate. Indigo, Roman, Eden not my style but perfectly acceptable names. So if it was a joke, op could have done much better!

Anyway I now hope it’s not a joke thread in the end as I actually really like Quentina and think it is elegant and pretty and unusual, an actual name, and perfect on the bc of a Queenie! If you are there and genuine op, I’d go for that!

Yes and Quentin as a spelling too.

Probably due a revival!

It’s absolutely littered with spite towards people seemingly “getting above themselves”

Yes it is.

Im not sure why. I think most of the names are fine.

BeBlueShaker · 07/04/2025 18:33

It's taken me a while to read all of these responses, thank you for the genuine ones!

I'm aware that my naming style is seen as very pretentious but this is purely just based off names that we like and nothing to do with our class or anything like that, I'm sorry if I have seemed to cause some offence through this.

I have taken some of the feedback on board and I don't think we will be using Beauregard any time soon, however we still need a name and we have come to quite a loss of what to use. I'm almost too scared to share other names we have been considering 😂

Cassiopeia loves her name and it suits her very well, for all of the responces questioning this. She actually prefers to use her full name rather than Cassie and she is able to choose which one she loves the most to use!

Posted to say how much I adore Cassiopeia and always have. For me, it’s the ultimate “if I was brave enough and could be sure they’d be outgoing enough to suit it name” (but I had a boy and went for something uber “safe” in the end).

I do think with a sibling name like Cassiopeia, something longer and uncommon works better. So of your list Nicodemus (Nico) works well imo. Christian/Christopher (Kit) isn’t exactly uncommon but the length and sounds work well with Cassiopeia imo.

Orion (maybe nn Orry?) was the name that instantly sprang to mind for boys as being a perfect match to Cassiopeia in style or maybe something like Maximilian (Maxim), Atticus or Lysander.

For girls you are spoilt for choice with Greek or Roman options (so even though it’s short, I think your suggestion of Juno works). Personally I like something like Selene or Ianthe with Cassiopeia, although again Persephone seems obvious length/style wise.

Cora is the traditional nickname for Persephone 😊
