Thoughts on the name Briar-Rebecca, I have an incredibly boring name and am surrounded by siblings with unique names they love!
I think briar is beautiful and Rebecca is nice and classic if preferred could be used.
interested in others thoughts.
thanks

I don't think there's anything wrong with the name Briar. There's a very talented dancer called Briar Nolet. There's no need to clutter it up with a hyphenated other name.

Gruttenberg · 07/01/2025 19:49

In my head it's Briary Becca. I have a daughter named Rebecca. She regrets her name as she can't say the letter R so goes by Becky instead. Briary will probably end up being called Bri. Bria Riri Becca - not for me.

Just realised if the baby is another who can't say R when asked for her full name she'll have to say Bwiya Wee Wee Becca. Please don't do it.

sorry but Briar rhymes with Liar too easily

I think Briar-Anne-Bramble flows much better.

Hmm
Monsterstogo · 07/01/2025 20:09

Reminded me of br’er rabbit. I’d just think it was his sibling!

Peachy2005 · 07/01/2025 20:17

Briar-Rebecca won’t thank you and will no doubt name her own kids the plainest possible. This I have observed in any cousins who have very unusual/individual names. Their own kids are all Maria, Anna, Tom and similar. I would infer that they didn’t enjoy having such special names themselves.

shoopshoopdedoo · 07/01/2025 20:18

I’d definitely stick with Rebecca

hot2trotter · 07/01/2025 20:19

Awful

FatFiatMultiplaWhopper · 07/01/2025 20:35

Awful.

Bryony or Brianna instead of Briar which is a thorny bush so not a suitable name for a human being.

HugoYorway · 07/01/2025 21:48

Have you considered Eieoie-Nevaeh, @Smallceramicfrog , or are you saving it for DD2?

Tubetrain · 07/01/2025 21:49

Would you like to be called that?

  1. any of a number of prickly scrambling shrubs, especially a wild rose.
Mirabai · 07/01/2025 21:58

Eg. Rose, blackberry, greenbrier

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 07/01/2025 21:58

Briar is not really my style but I don't think it is "horrible." I like the idea of including a more conventional name and I really like Rebecca anyway, but I would do it without the hyphen. Briar Rebecca. Then she can use Rebecca or one of its short forms one day if she prefers to, but she's not stuck with an extra long name for everyday use .

Acc0untant · 07/01/2025 22:00

I've never understood the love for Briar. It's half a pen stroke away from Brian.

OnceMoreWithAttitude · 07/01/2025 22:02

Too long as a first name.
Fine as separate names

My first thought for some reason was Brer rabbit . 😂

Briar and Rebecca don't seem to go together at all, they don't run nicely and seem like a very clunky mouthful.

Briar is pretty, ramming Rebecca randomly on the end of it for no reason is crazy.

I mean it's not a surprise! It's also what I thought of because he always ends up in the thorny briar patch somehow or another.

I think it's fair to say that being named after a thorny bush wouldn't be something that I'd be particularly pleased about.

Sidebeforeself · 07/01/2025 22:05

What a mouthful!

RuthW · 07/01/2025 22:06

Absolutely awful.

Call her Rebecca

Scrabbelator · 07/01/2025 22:13

Briar!! Please, please, please think of the potential nicknames your daughter will be subjected to. Bramble, Thorn, Barb are the first ones that come to mind. There are many more! Please don't do it. Your child will hate you for it.

NoCarbsForMe · 07/01/2025 23:15

God no! Not Briar.
Priya is nicer.
Rebecca is nice too.

HugoYorway · 07/01/2025 23:17

How do you get from Briar to Priya?

"It's not looked down on"

Sadly, it is - people are usually polite enough not to say it to you/out loud, but having worked in a wide range of sectors I can promise you many, many people are rude enough to be saying it to each other.

Edited

Names like Sally- Ann, Marie- Claire and Sarah-Jane are looked down upon? By whom?
