Thoughts on the name Briar-Rebecca, I have an incredibly boring name and am surrounded by siblings with unique names they love!
I think briar is beautiful and Rebecca is nice and classic if preferred could be used.
interested in others thoughts.
thanks

I wouldn't have briar as a middle name, it might be assumed as a double barrelled surname instead. I only know this name as a surname but I do like it as a first name just not hyphenated.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/01/2025 18:48

I've just checked the dictionary. It's got 2 meanings.

  1. A thorny Bush.
  2. A type of pipe for smoking tobacco.

Er.... FYI to all you snobby posters I have a hyphenated name, it is not looked down on, I was born in the early 90s.
Anyway this is a ridiculous name OP, seriously? What is this craze with people trying to out do each other with the "out there" "cool mum" names 🥱

"It's not looked down on"

Sadly, it is - people are usually polite enough not to say it to you/out loud, but having worked in a wide range of sectors I can promise you many, many people are rude enough to be saying it to each other.

HeffalumpsAndWoozlesAreHoneyRobbingTwats · 07/01/2025 18:51

It's hideous. Hand your child a lettuce and a target, why don't you?

Notrynajudge · 07/01/2025 18:54

No it's horrible sorry.

Maybe Rebecca Briar [surname]. Briar as a middle name. It flows better than Briar Rebecca.

Definitely not one name and definitely not hyphenated.

Sweet Briar Rose/Eglantine is a kind of wild rose

@Azandme
I don't really care 😂

How rude. Fyi? Who even speaks like that?

When I was choosing a name and came to Mumsnet I wanted honest opinions. I'd want to know if I was inadvertently picking a name lots of people would find naff.

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 07/01/2025 19:10

I don’t think it works because of the way the first word finishes with an R and the next starts with one. It means they run into each other. Also the syllable pattern is weird. Sorry.

beadystar · 07/01/2025 19:10

It would be cruel to call a person that. She isn't a house pet, one day she will be a 45 year old woman who's been saddled with a silly name.
Rebecca is a beautiful classic.
Briar is terrible.
The two hyphenated are beyond tacky.
What about Brianna Rebecca Surname?

Even Francophone women with French names like Marie-Louise or Marie-Claire?

It's not me being a snob, it's telling the truth about how a lot of people view hyphenated names. I've seen it mentioned many times on the baby names boards. I wanted to know if a lot of people viewed my favourite names negatively when I was asking for opinions on Mumsnet.

Dorisbonson · 07/01/2025 19:15

Better to have something more main steam, shorter and without hyphen.

Of course you do or you wouldn’t have barrelled in to declare people “snobby”.

I think Briar-Anne-Bramble flows much better.

🤣🤣🤣
Maybe Briar Rabbitika?

Actually not that I've come across. Perhaps because they are longstanding names that have been hyphenated for centuries, as opposed to people using hyphens to stick two individual names together even when they are clunky, or end up with eight syllables.

Who knows.

LittleBigHead · 07/01/2025 19:32

No.

choose either Briar (very weird but ok if you want a yoonique name to make you look “interesting “)

or Rebecca which is simple, charming and unpretentious

Just imagine yourDD’s name being called out in daily class registers for 13 years of school

BunnyLake · 07/01/2025 19:33

Do you mean you would intend on calling her that as her first name? Briar-Rebecca your dinner’s ready? If so then please no! Both names are very nice but as a hyphenated first name it’s not good.

At the very least hyphenated names should flow.

coronafiona · 07/01/2025 19:34

I think she'd get called Brian.

Yes but the proposed name is not “Briar-Rose”.

The proposed name is clunky and difficult to say as well as lacking in rhythm as spoken in English.

LittleBigHead · 07/01/2025 19:37

I’m now channelling Kath and Kim - Epponeee yes it’s a yoooniq name.

Those names are dated and from when only certain names could be registered.

Maryminx · 07/01/2025 19:41

Hi! I would say a big NO to Briar. I'm a teacher and registered nurse private nanny. Briar is a type of bush and open to ridicule. My name is Mary and as a kid used to think it boring but now love it.just trying to be helpful x

Yes, you can’t just hyphenate two names together and think they all equally work. There has to be some element of cohesion. Sue-Ellen is a good example, more American, but it does flow. You wouldn't hyphen Elizabeth-Gillian as a first name as it would sound ridiculous.

StrikeItMucky · 07/01/2025 19:44

It's a straight no from me, sorry!
