Rory, for a girl?

I recently met some parents at the playground who had a daughter named Rory and now I'm really considering it. I know it's typically a boys name but I think it sounds really nice, and suited the young girl I met with the name. I also like it for the fact it's a 'boys name', because I think it will then suit our other children's names, since they're all boys. When we mentioned it to my SIL, she said it reminded her of Gilmore Girls, which isn't a bad thing, but do you think that's what people will always connect it with? I am starting to really like it, but don't know how it compared to some of our other top options, e.g. Lydia, Keira, Mia, Violet, Elodie.
Thanks in advance everyone x x ❤️

If you want a lifetime of people assuming your daughter is a boy then go for it.

Instantly thought of Gilmore girls- and I don't think Rory from that was particularly great so...

VioletCrawleyForever · 06/11/2024 03:44

Gilmore Girls fans will not think it's a boys name.

I think it's becoming more popular for girl now though!

I love it, and I've never seen the Gilmore girls.

My first thought would be that it's a boy, but I still love it all the more for a girl.

Babyenroute · 06/11/2024 03:53

I like it as a nickname with maybe a longer traditional girls name?

verycloakanddaggers · 06/11/2024 03:57

I also like it for the fact it's a 'boys name', because I think it will then suit our other children's names, since they're all boys. I really don't understand this thought process.

Pick the child a name that suits them.

JuliaJoJelly · 06/11/2024 04:00

I do think written down, most people would assume it is a boy and then if I found out it was a girl, I would think Gilmore Girls.

User28473 · 06/11/2024 04:05

I know several little girl Rory's, but they are all short for Aurora, which is in the top 50 for girls names. Ironic really that it is a masculine nickname for a Disney Princess 😂 but because of that I think it definitely works as a girls name if you just want Rory. I think it's similar to Riley, which works for either sex.

leafybrew · 06/11/2024 04:20

Nope - not Rory or Riley for a girl.

Soooo many lovely girls' names; just pick one of them.

FacingTheWall · 06/11/2024 04:23

I’d assume a Gilmore girls connection.

harrietm87 · 06/11/2024 04:57

The character is Gilmore girls was Rory short for Lorelai. I’ve also heard Rory short for Aurora.

If you must, give her one of those names and Rory can be a nickname.

I don’t like the trend of calling baby girls boys names because it never ever happens the other way round.

SnapdragonToadflax · 06/11/2024 05:00

As a nickname fine, but Rory is a boy's name. Give her a girl's name (Aurora or Lorelai), then let her choose to have the nickname Rory when she's older if she wants to.

MissedItByThisMuch · 06/11/2024 05:06

I think it’s perfectly wearable on a girl if you like it. People would assume boy when they heard the name - but only once!

I guess my only concern would be if your others are boys, and you use a boys name as the full name, that she might think you’d wished she was a boy? Using Aurora nn Rory would avoid this though.

Twiglets1 · 06/11/2024 05:31

Rory is a boys name so do the kid a favour and pick a girls name.

northernsouldownsouth · 06/11/2024 05:44

No, it's always been a boys name where I come from.
It'll be a complete pain for your DD in every aspect of her life - school, clubs, job applications etc having to explain she's a girl not a boy every time. She'll get so fed up of it

Firsttimebabymummy · 06/11/2024 05:56

I see it as a girls name as think of Rory from Lucifer

However there are lots of nice girls names if that's a boys name. Don't like Aurora

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/11/2024 06:23

I’m not keen on it for a girl - I’d find it a complete pain to go through life with a traditional male name and having to explain on the phone etc that yes, that is my name, and yes I am female.

It’s a bit better as a nn for Lorelei (although I love Lori as a nn for that). I don’t like Aurora personally.

Your other girls name ideas are so lovely (Lydia, Keira, Mia, Violet, Elodie) - definitely go back to one of those 😊

Justsayit123 · 06/11/2024 06:26

why inflict this on your dd???

TheaBrandt · 06/11/2024 06:27

Cute as a nick name for Aurora but not on its own

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 06/11/2024 06:29

I'd love a name like Rory if I were starting over

JustinThyme · 06/11/2024 06:30

To me it sounds like “we were hoping for another son. How disappointing.”

MyEarringsAreGreen · 06/11/2024 06:31

A famous drummer named his daughter Rory in the 1970s. I think it's pretty for a girl.

Thunderpants88 · 06/11/2024 06:36

Don’t do it
