Rory, for a girl?

I recently met some parents at the playground who had a daughter named Rory and now I'm really considering it. I know it's typically a boys name but I think it sounds really nice, and suited the young girl I met with the name. I also like it for the fact it's a 'boys name', because I think it will then suit our other children's names, since they're all boys. When we mentioned it to my SIL, she said it reminded her of Gilmore Girls, which isn't a bad thing, but do you think that's what people will always connect it with? I am starting to really like it, but don't know how it compared to some of our other top options, e.g. Lydia, Keira, Mia, Violet, Elodie.
Thanks in advance everyone x x ❤️

Only when it becomes common for girls to be called Geoffrey or Archibald.

Fine as a nickname if her full name contains the syllable Ror/Rau/Rah

Aurora
Braunwyn
Affrah

InTheRainOnATrain · 06/11/2024 08:47

I think people either think boy, or Gilmore Girls and that Rory is an awful, unlikeable brat so not an association you want really!

DuchessOfSausage · 06/11/2024 08:48

Braunwyn & Affrah don't look like names, unless they are bad spellings of Bronwen and Aphra.

I quite like Roni short for Veronica

If you want a lifetime of people assuming your daughter is a boy then go for it.

As always the first reply nails it

Why on Earth would you put your daughter through a lifetime of questions and possible piss taking over her name

It's a boys name

End of !!

Grepes · 06/11/2024 08:56

I don’t think she’s have a lifetime of having to explain she’s a female - surely that will be immediately evident when they meet her!

I’m glad the people I meet in real life aren’t as judgemental as people on here. I work in a multicultural company and many people have names that are uncommon in English - never heard anyone make a fuss of it.

I think Rory is a lovely name. I don’t see how people thinking it’s a male name on paper is an issue - it could even be an advantage on a CV depending on the industry she goes on to work in!

SnaccidentsHappen · 06/11/2024 08:56

I like it, you could even spell it differently if you wanted too - Rori, Rory, Rorey, Roray, Rorie.

For all the comments that's it's a nickname, there are lots of nicknames that are now names in their own right.

Millie, Katie, Gabby, Penny, Leo, Alex, Xander, Greg etc.

It's fine to use nicknames as names in their own right.

MoodEnhancer · 06/11/2024 08:58

I think it’s fine but would absolutely assume you had based it on Gilmore Girls.

Cloouudnine · 06/11/2024 09:00

Really hard for little kids to pronounce?

MerryMarys · 06/11/2024 09:00

I don’t think she’s have a lifetime of having to explain she’s a female - surely that will be immediately evident when they meet her!

Exactly. Lots of women have names that don't give away their gender eg Alex

Jessie1259 · 06/11/2024 09:01

It just suggests to me that you wanted another boy. Why would you do that to your child? Would you change your own name to a boys name? There are a million lovely girls names, just choose one of those instead.

oakleaffy · 06/11/2024 06:59

Why should a girl match her brothers?

Would you want a boy to match his sisters?

Let the girl be a proud of who she is, not a pastiche of a boy.

This. Plus she'll have her whole life, explaining herself.

I'm conflicted but going against the grain to say I really like it! For no other reason than it's a nice sounding name that's not in popular use today (I haven't heard of any Rorys in years) so it's reinventing it really.

It's similar to have Sydney as a girl's name, which I also like.

Conflicted as I expect she'll opt for pronouns in her email footer to make her life easier, rather than for any other reason.

Rory is extremely popular for baby boys atm. The most recent 3 boys I know (born in last 6 months) are all called Rory and there are 2 in my 6yos year at school.

I just checked the stats and it’s risen in the last year from 93rd to 38th in the U.K. and will likely rise more.

LeafyGreenSalad · 06/11/2024 09:15

Would you be thrilled if your parents had called you Brian?

Saschka · 06/11/2024 09:22

I also like it for the fact it's a 'boys name', because I think it will then suit our other children's names, since they're all boys

I don’t follow this part either. Are you going to rename all of your children Rory? 🤯

housemaus · 06/11/2024 09:25

I know a little girl called Rory and I've always liked it! I say go for it :)

maryj1996 · 06/11/2024 09:25

I like it - suitable from baby to adult, easy to spell. It’s a cute name.

WaneyEdge · 06/11/2024 09:25

In Gilmore Girls it isn’t her name though. It’s a nickname for Lorelai, presumably as she has the same name as her mum.

ImpressionSunrise · 06/11/2024 09:32

I wouldn’t use it as it’s a boys name and I think the chances are that she won’t thank you for it.

Mischance · 06/11/2024 09:34

Makes me think of a dragon.

PreggersWithBaby2 · 06/11/2024 09:38

My daughter has a typically "boys" name, she has never been mistaken for a boy.
She also has a typically shortened version of a longer name, only once were we asked what it was short for!

OP the best advice I can give you is don't come to Mumsnet for name advice!

amoreoamicizia · 06/11/2024 09:43

It's quirky and quite pretty but is it just me that finds it doesn't roll off the tongue very easily? I'm afraid I wouldn't choose it because I couldn't be bothered to pronounce it for the rest of my life.

mrselton · 06/11/2024 09:47

Not a fan of Rory.

Violet is beautiful.

But that’s just my opinion!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 06/11/2024 09:49

Of all the thousands of girls names you want to lumber your daughter with a boy's name. Would you like to be called Dave or Gary?
Aurora. Not Rory!!!

CurlewKate · 06/11/2024 09:52

@harrietm87 that's a pretty amazing coincidence-considering that there were only something between 1000 and 1500 boys a year called Rory out of 300000!

DuchessOfSausage · 06/11/2024 09:56

housemaus · 06/11/2024 09:25

I know a little girl called Rory and I've always liked it! I say go for it :)

like Rory Stewart, Rory McGrath, Rory Bremner, Rory Kinnear, Rory McIlroy, Rory Gallagher, ...
