Rory, for a girl?

TheMummyJade · 06/11/2024 03:25

I recently met some parents at the playground who had a daughter named Rory and now I'm really considering it. I know it's typically a boys name but I think it sounds really nice, and suited the young girl I met with the name. I also like it for the fact it's a 'boys name', because I think it will then suit our other children's names, since they're all boys. When we mentioned it to my SIL, she said it reminded her of Gilmore Girls, which isn't a bad thing, but do you think that's what people will always connect it with? I am starting to really like it, but don't know how it compared to some of our other top options, e.g. Lydia, Keira, Mia, Violet, Elodie.
Thanks in advance everyone x x ❤️

I love it. My DD10 has a traditional boys name, while sometimes she’s misgendered it doesn’t bug her or us. She unusually proud of the fact she’s got a ‘traditional’ boy name and is a girl - she loves it.

A friend of mines DD’s middle name is James and I love that too.

Given the Gilmore Girls connection I’d totally go for it - it’s not that unusual and I think a name that works well for a child as well as a grown woman.

DuchessOfSausage · 06/11/2024 09:59

@Alphabetamega , do your DSs have traditionally girls' names? Are they unusually proud to be boys with 'traditional' girls' names?

Sarah2891 · 06/11/2024 10:00

Rory will never be a girl name

Attelina · 06/11/2024 10:01

Not for a girl! That's horrid

DirlingWhervish · 06/11/2024 10:02

Are we helping or hindering the decision @TheMummyJade? Grin

I'd just think you were a massive Gilmore girls fan. I don't hate it but prefer your other girls names tbh, especially Lydia and Violet

Why are you assuming I have DS? Or any other children? I’ve only mentioned one and it’s surely irrelevant if I have more kids. FWIW We didn’t want a boy or a girl we just wanted a child born alive and healthy…. Read into that what you will.

We had loads of names boys and girls picked out and this name felt right in the end for her. And she loves it. It’s not a common boys name - no other kid in the school has it, but it’s not an uncommon one either.

Driedonion · 06/11/2024 10:06

You’re going to saddle her with a lifetime of explaining her name to people.
As someone Scottish, I would consider it a boy’s name , given that it means “red king”.

DuchessOfSausage · 06/11/2024 10:14

I'm not assuming anything, @Alphabetamega , but I bet you if you did have a son you woudn't have called him a girl's name.

Really hard for little kids to pronounce?

@TheMummyJade
Going completely against the grain and I've never seen gilmore girls, but I love it.
I used Elenor for my DD.
She gets everything from nelly to elle and she's named after someone I adored, but I hear other names of girls her age and it does feel quite dated as opposed to classic. I love it because I loved og nell, but if I were choosing another girls name I'd love Rory.
The thing with names is we can't all like the same one.
I'm not keen on a few of the very popular MN names and that's fine, my names aren't their jam either. You can only name your baby what you love.

Edit as replied to wrong comment!

Possibly, but I’ll never know.

A lot of our names were in fact gender neutral or a name now very popular for a girl but was historically a used as boys name so it’s possible that I’d still name a boy a name which depending on generation or cultural context could have thought it was a girl (like the name Taylor or Noah/Noa for example).

I am so grateful for a child a couldn’t give a shit about what others think about my DD’s name. And personally I feel as long as it’s not an offensive name (culturally or otherwise) people can crack on.

MumonabikeE5 · 06/11/2024 10:30

Loreli and Rory, from that show.

NewGreenDuck · 06/11/2024 10:32

Noa has always been a female name in Hebrew. Noa is in the Old testament. It's not the same name as Noah, the builder of the ark. In Hebrew they have different meanings.

RareMaker · 06/11/2024 10:33

Gilmore girls, and Rory is awful in the later seasons.

Firsttimebabymummy · 06/11/2024 05:56

I see it as a girls name as think of Rory from Lucifer

However there are lots of nice girls names if that's a boys name. Don't like Aurora

Auroras a lovely name

Scrimt · 06/11/2024 10:36

Argh I haaate Rory being used for a girl. Seems to be pretty common in America these days because of the Gilmore Girls, but it just really gets on my nerves.

I’m another who rolls their eyes at boys’ names becoming girls’ names. No one ever does the reverse.

Thewildthingsarewithme · 06/11/2024 10:38

Eleanora and Leonora can also both be used for a Rory nickname and are both beautiful

Potentiallyplausible · 06/11/2024 10:40

Only if short for a proper name, like Aurora - but I hate that. Maybe some alternatives-
Cory - Coraline
Dory - Dorothy
Tory - Victoria
Romy - Rosemary
Rosie

pinotgrigeeeeo · 06/11/2024 10:42

Nah, it's a boys name. It's a pretty good boys name, but a boys name nonetheless.

In a similar vein to the celebs (Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, I think?) who named their daughter James?

Just daft.

If you want an androgynous name how about Alex? Or Charlie? Or Sam?

Although I'm not sure if why you want the name to fit in with ger brothers names.

They are individuals. Not a "sibling set".

amoreoamicizia · 06/11/2024 10:44

Romy doesn't come from Rosemary, it's a name in its own right. Nor is Rory a nickname for Eleanora.

PassMeTheCookies · 06/11/2024 10:54

I have a friend whose daughter is called Aurora, but call her Rory. I like it, but wouldn't call her just Rory, she'll spend forever correcting people that she's not a boy.

DottieMoon · 06/11/2024 10:55

Love it

harrietm87 · 06/11/2024 11:21

@CurlewKate those are past statistics - as I said, these are babies all born this year (to my cousin, my friend, and my colleague if you are doubting me for some reason…).

According to the dark greener website it’s had a rapid rise in popularity and my expectation is that it will be much higher up in the charts for next year.
