Rory, for a girl?

TheMummyJade · 06/11/2024 03:25

I recently met some parents at the playground who had a daughter named Rory and now I'm really considering it. I know it's typically a boys name but I think it sounds really nice, and suited the young girl I met with the name. I also like it for the fact it's a 'boys name', because I think it will then suit our other children's names, since they're all boys. When we mentioned it to my SIL, she said it reminded her of Gilmore Girls, which isn't a bad thing, but do you think that's what people will always connect it with? I am starting to really like it, but don't know how it compared to some of our other top options, e.g. Lydia, Keira, Mia, Violet, Elodie.
Thanks in advance everyone x x ❤️

Romy doesn't come from Rosemary, it's a name in its own right. Nor is Rory a nickname for Eleanora.

Romy did come from Rosemary originally, though.

DuchessOfSausage · 06/11/2024 12:26

@harrietm87 , the rapid rise in popularity is from 3 girls in 2011 to 39 girls in 2022, compared with from 586 boys to 1435 boys.

@Potentiallyplausible , it was from Rosemarie, and it was a stage name.

Barleycat · 06/11/2024 12:26

How about Brian or Steve?

How about Brian or Steve?

Or Wilfred or Hubert?

Edenmum2 · 06/11/2024 12:33

Love it, especially as short for Aurora

I like it, you could even spell it differently if you wanted too - Rori, Rory, Rorey, Roray, Rorie.

For all the comments that's it's a nickname, there are lots of nicknames that are now names in their own right.

Millie, Katie, Gabby, Penny, Leo, Alex, Xander, Greg etc.

It's fine to use nicknames as names in their own right.

Actually quite cute for a girl with the Rorie spelling, looks more feminine! Love it (unsurprisingly, as it rhymes with my DDs name!)

I know baby girls called Riley, River, Robin ...

CurlewKate · 06/11/2024 12:49

@Alphabetamega "I love it. My DD10 has a traditional boys name, while sometimes she’s misgendered it doesn’t bug her or us. She unusually proud of the fact she’s got a ‘traditional’ boy name and is a girl - she loves it."

I hope your DS Sophia is proud of the fact that he has a traditional girl name. If not, why not?

aintnospringchicken · 06/11/2024 12:52

Every Rory I know is boy.
We have a baby Rory in the family.

I was talking about boys.

MerryMarys · 06/11/2024 13:23

Wow, that's a large increase in Rory used for girls. And that's on top of Auroras, Lorelais being k own as Rory

mac111 · 06/11/2024 15:29

I really like it (but I also really like surname names so what do I know)
As someone with a 'boy' name myself, I can confirm that it is quite common for people to expect you to be male - but it has never been more than a 2 second conversation
Them: Oh, I assumed from your name you were a boy
Me: Oh did you
End of confusion

CurlewKate · 06/11/2024 18:09

Why don't we give boys girl's names?

Drivingoverlemons · 06/11/2024 18:12

Short for Aurora, fine. On its own - will get mistaken for a boy. I can’t work out why it’s short for Lorelei personally, except that it is on Gilmore Girls.

DuchessOfSausage · 06/11/2024 18:14

@harrietm87 , R names are very popular for boys now.

@MerryMarys , percentage-wise it's a huge increase but tiny in terms of how many more boys are called Rory now. Aurora is in the top 50 but it's not that popular.

MerryMarys · 06/11/2024 18:14

CurlewKate · 06/11/2024 18:09

Why don't we give boys girl's names?

Probably because we don't want to Hmm

Doesn't mean parents can't give their girls unisex or boys names. We thankfully live in a free society

DuchessOfSausage · 06/11/2024 18:18

Yes, we live in a free society and when no longer children can choose new names instead of the naff ones our parents gave us.

Rebecccca · 06/11/2024 18:18

Love it. Full name Aurora. Nick name Rory

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 06/11/2024 18:29

It’s lovely, but bear in mind that there is nowhere to turn should your daughter struggle with the letter ‘r’. ‘R’ surrounded by vowels, argh.

CurlewKate · 06/11/2024 19:26

@MerryMarys "Doesn't mean parents can't give their girls unisex or boys names. We thankfully live in a free society"

Of course they can and we do. But aren't you a little curious about why it's OK to give girls boy's names (or unisex names, which is basically the same thing) but not the other way round?

RuthW · 06/11/2024 19:35

Aurora with shortening Rory is better

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2024 20:27

We have a girl Rory in LLL tonight

Tho gay and dresses/is the male in the relationship

Hope I've worded that correctly

HowIsItNovemberAlready · 06/11/2024 21:37

I wouldn’t use Rory for a girl.

I think Aurora is one of the worst girls names so I wouldn’t use that just to use Rory as a nickname.

Grepes · 06/11/2024 21:56

Who are all these people demanding others ‘explain their name’? Why would she have to explain her name? I’ve never asked someone to do that, never heard anyone ask that of others, or had someone complain to me that people have asked them to explain their own name.

I have an unusual name, so do a lot of my friends, I’d think someone was a complete plonker if they asked anyone to ‘explain their name’. Maybe it’s a good way of weeding out people you don’t want to talk to ever again?

In addition, I have a son with a nickname that’s a traditionally female name. It’s not been an issue so far, but we live in an area where people don’t tend to be as closed minded about names that aren’t Jane and James.

CurlewKate · 07/11/2024 06:58

Obviously anyone can call their child anything. But surely it's worth thinking about why giving a girl a boy's name is considered a good thing and as least one poster on here has said something for her to be "proud of" while nobody ever gives a boy a girl's name. And why names which have always been boy's names but start to be used for girls plummet in popularity for boys....

NotoriousNameChanger · 07/11/2024 07:41

JuliaJoJelly · 06/11/2024 04:00

I do think written down, most people would assume it is a boy and then if I found out it was a girl, I would think Gilmore Girls.

Likewise. As soon as I read that it was for a girl, my mind straight to the Gilmore Girls. But IIRC, Rory is actually a nickname for Lorelai. @TheMummyJade You could go for Aurora or Lorelai and have Rory as a nickname to give more options in the future?
