What comes to mind when you hear the name Bodhi?

Is it a really popular name or not so much? I’ve seen a couple on Instagram but don’t know of any personally.

Aspirational LMC aiming at bohemian UMC.

and Doyle

Yep, this.

It's what I always suggest on name my kittens threads.

TeamLoganHuntzberger · 11/05/2024 21:38

My DS is (an older) Bodhi. The name didn’t even feature on ranked lists when we chose it. I still love it.
His sister has a name that isn’t a name at all, and yes we are surfing, paddle boarding, South Western folk.

Dustpantsandbush · 11/05/2024 21:40

Makes me think of yellow labradors

Giggorata · 11/05/2024 21:41

I know one Bodhi. His mother is the daughter of a friend and they are part of the traveller/eco protest community.

A white weed dealer who sells a ton, smokes a ton, and is its biggest fan (always going on about how MJ is nature’s perfect plant and the best medicine in the universe), has dreadlocks, goes to music festivals, particularly anything related to Phish, and his house has both lava lamps and velvet blacklight posters.

'The only law that matters is gravity'

nameXname · 11/05/2024 21:51

It has a specific religious connotation, as previous posters have said. Unless you follow that failth, I think it's inappropriate verging on disrespectful.

KatPurrson · 11/05/2024 22:20

It makes me think of Buddhism. I’d be careful using it unless I was a practising Buddhist and knew whether or not it was ok to use it as a name.

TeenLifeMum · 11/05/2024 22:23

Try hard? 😂

I know a Bodhi and she’s mid 30s. I met her about 10 years ago and the only thought I had was “oh that’s a lovely name”. I’ve never met a person who introduced themselves and I thought “god their parents were a bit try hard!” Try hard at what - choosing a name you like for you child?

anyway, I think it’s a lovely name.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 11/05/2024 22:24

Terrible. Poor child.

ridingfreely · 11/05/2024 22:50

I think of a really naughty boy in Dd7 class, I do like the name though. We nearly called DD Bo which could have been confusing. He is the only Bodhi I know but it is growing in popularity. I wouldn't let that put me off a name I loved though

MavisPennies · 11/05/2024 22:53

I know a little Bodhi, he's lovely. Nice Buddhist name (family are Buddhists)

NoSnowdrop · 11/05/2024 22:58

Hard no.

BoleynMemories13 · 12/05/2024 07:03

It's awful, I've heard way too many kids change Bodhi to Bogey. Shortening it to Bo is no better. Both Bodhi and Beau (Bo) seem to be names chosen by people who smugly boast about how different their kids names are but then are gutted to find it's duplicated at school anyway because, far from being different, they're hit on the latest hippy trend.

Brody/Brodie is slightly preferable.

timoteigirl · 12/05/2024 17:10

I understood that Bodhi is not the same as Buddha which means an old man. To me bodhi is another tree name such as Ash, Rowan, Ebony, Juniper....

Berlinlover · 12/05/2024 17:16

Richard and Judy’s granddaughter. Awful name.

Blessedbethefruitz · 12/05/2024 17:24

Surfer.

It was on our shortlist actually, but we opted for a more 'normal' name for ds which would never need spelling, but just as good (for a child or adult). He has an awesome unusual middle name too. We are not surfers or Buddhists.

nameXname · 12/05/2024 17:33

@timoteigirl According to the Encyclopaedia Brittanica, 'bodhi' means spiritual enlightenment:
https://www.britannica.com/topic/bodhi-Buddhism

There is indeed a species of tree (figus religiosa) known as Bodhi (among other names) but it also has religious significance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ficus_religiosa

timoteigirl · 12/05/2024 17:38

Thanks @nameXname I read that above but as the question was about what association you would have with this name, that is what I answered. If you want an englightement related meaning, what about Zen?

existentialannie · 12/05/2024 17:38

I’ve heard of a Boden. Not that I can talk, one of my kids names is a brand.

Sunnnybunny72 · 12/05/2024 17:41

Difficult to carry off as you age.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 12/05/2024 19:31

Imagine being an adult and having to introduce yourself as Bodhi. 😂

MovingBird123 · 12/05/2024 20:40

Weird calling your child after Buddha if you don't have heritage in that direction. It also makes me think of "body" as in "dead body" come to mind. Sorry, I know that's not nice.
