What comes to mind when you hear the name Bodhi?

Is it a really popular name or not so much? I’ve seen a couple on Instagram but don’t know of any personally.

Written down to me it looks like a girl's name but sounded out I hear it as a boy's name so it's complete confusing to me as someone with dyslexia/ processing issues.

Interesting points about spelling - the spelling “Bodie” is significantly less common (only 60 babies in 2021 compared to 404 Bodhi) so I would have assumed that would be peoples go to spelling.

I've never been sure how to pronounce this - is it like Bodie?

MountCaramel · 11/05/2024 20:46

Westerners can't pronounce Bodhi correctly, as a name it has had its day in my area. It is a bit dated now but it wouldn't have been my first choice anyway.

I prefer the name Raoul which I believe is the French version of Ralph.

When I first glanced the thread title I thought you were asking opinions on a new brand of period pants.

BrendaSmall · 11/05/2024 20:46

There was a Bodhi when I worked in school ended up being called bogey for some reason

HaystackHair · 11/05/2024 20:51

Chloe Madeley

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/05/2024 20:57

Bodhi sounds like a cool surfer dude, probably with hippy parents :)

Needanewname42 · 11/05/2024 20:59

How are Bodhi and Bodie pronounced any differently to body?

But maybe it's a Glasgow thing?

BingoMarieHeeler · 11/05/2024 21:01

I think it sounds really affected.

LizzieBennett73 · 11/05/2024 21:02

It strikes me as a name where Mum and Dad are trying just a little too hard to be "cool" parents. And missing.

Poor child will spend it's entire life saying "no, it's spelled B-O-D-H-I."

I always thought Bodhi is ode as in ‘ode to joy’, not odd as in body. But yes obviously accent dependent I guess!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 11/05/2024 21:06

What comes to mind? I think of the tree. As a name I imagine a blond haired baby with one of those amber necklaces for teething and very hippy parents living in Australia on the beach. Although I also always think of January and Bohdi Schofield.

Cas112 · 11/05/2024 21:06

Nicer names out there

Nottherealslimshady · 11/05/2024 21:06

Love it. Maybe a bit hippyish but I'd rather be hippyish than chavvy. I quite like hippyish names. Bodie means long live the king or something, much prefer the meaning of Bodhi.
Most people have to spell their names out nowadays, and mispronuciations are common. There are lost of different names in schools now, I don't think there's as much bullying over different names. My class of 20 had 4 joshes, 3 James, 2 Sarah's, 2 Megan's, 3 Jack's, 2 Michael's. People thought it was weird if you were the only person with your name.

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 11/05/2024 21:07

As few dogs around here called Bodhi

VeraForever · 11/05/2024 21:07

Why not Bodie? Why an 'h' and an 'I?'
Trying too hard to be 'out there' with the random spelling of a very ordinary name.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 11/05/2024 21:08

1970s cop show, The Professionals Bodie & Doyle or the shop Boden. Bo is nice though.

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/05/2024 21:09

Point Break. One of Megan Fox's sons has that name.

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 11/05/2024 21:12

I know two, both young primary school age, in my small town. Have to wonder how annoyed each family is that they aren't unique!

Viviennemary · 11/05/2024 21:12

I've heard a lot worse on here. It has quite a nice sound I think. But it's a bit too unusual., nobody will be able to spell it.

IsaidByeByeMissAmericanPie · 11/05/2024 21:14

Yeah I'm not a fan. I actually know a few, and weirdly none of the families are very hipster. And in one case siblings have pretty normal names so I don't get it at all.

IamaRevenant · 11/05/2024 21:19

I know three Bodhis. Two children and one a man who changed his own name (I think from something like Dave).

The kids are from what I would describe as middle class hippy families and the man, frankly, is a knob. To me (sorry) the name Bodhi makes me think that the parents wanted to show how alternative and hippyish they are but don't actually have much imagination 😬

Theimpossiblegirl · 11/05/2024 21:33

My nephew is a Bodhi and he's a cute blonde hippy kid. His dad thinks he's named for the links to Buddhism but my sister and I know he's named after Patrick Swayze from Point Break.

LuluBlakey1 · 11/05/2024 21:35

It's awful- looks and sounds like it is trying very hard to be cool and failing badly.
