Me and dp have decided that we are going to call dd3 Skye.

We both have very different taste so finding at least one that we both like is nothing short of a bloody miracle!

Everyone thats been told this has screwed their faces up and made comments like "your joking"

Especially BF who made several nasty comments and is apparently taking over as soon as i've had her and demands she comes over within 24 hours of me popping her out! (erm nope!)

please someone tell me it isn't that bad

(ps everyone seemed to like the name my brother chose for his ds due in june...miecha pronounced mika, although they have changed it now but still.....)

Hanaflower that's a disgraceful thing to say to someone considering giving their child that name.

FGS if you don't like it then fair enough, but if you can't say anything nice.........

Let hope when you're wanting advice for baby names no-one says the same to you eh?

peanutbear · 03/04/2008 12:36

I really like it and would have loved to call mt DD this name DP wasnt so sure

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 03/04/2008 12:39

I love the name Skye - it is beautiful! We have a friend who named her DD Skyla - love that name too!

3andnomore · 03/04/2008 12:54

I like Skye, for what it's worth!

Sorry but I think it's a very silly name.
Each to their own, it's your baby, but you DID ask.

luckylady74 · 03/04/2008 13:08

Why is hanaflower's comment disgraceful? She thinks the name is ok and was merely pointing out what I pointed out - if you look at other threads the demographic that most use a particular name impacts a lot of peoples feelings about that name - not a great part of human nature but true nonethe less. My dd's name is her name and stands out amongst the Isobellas and Madeleines in my area, but it's my favourite name.

By the way - Victory is the best name I've heard on mumsnet bar none - respect!

sorkycake · 03/04/2008 13:08

'decidedly council estate' reads with such disdain hanaflower.

scottishmummy · 03/04/2008 13:11

beautiful scottish name - wonderful
evocative of a beautiful place for a beautiful wee baby

Skye is a fab name

We're trying to agree on two girls names and it's bad enough trying to agree between just the two of us. I've stopped asking other people what they think because it just winds me up too much.

It's such a personal thing. I found that if someone I like had a violently negative reaction that would put me off a name that I actually like, even if they then come out with a string of (to my mind) monstrosities as alternatives!!!

If you and your DH like Skye then stick with it and sod the naysayers, it is NONE of their business. Am amazed at how insensitive people can be!

iliketosleep · 03/04/2008 13:58

I wasn't offended i wouldnt post on here if i wasnt ready for the pros and cons

Myself personally had never seen it as 'chavvy' or 'council estatish' before but i can see what you mean.

I saw it as, as someone put it, hippy! I love anything like that, like lavender moongrass etc but i would never go there

Thanks all for your feedback, i feel alot better now that 99% of you like it

any suggestions for middle name???

OP posts:
fiodyl · 03/04/2008 14:26

I wanted to cal my DD Skye but like u said every1 seemed to dislike it when I told them, one person said "Sky?Like the TV channel?
So we decided to use it as her middle name instead

TartanKnickers · 03/04/2008 14:30

So hanaflower, did you mean "decidely council estate" in a good way then?

vicsta · 03/04/2008 14:33

OK I'll be honest. One of my best friends used Skye as her daughters middle name and asked for my opinion which I gave (basically by wrinkling up nose, 'you are joking' comments and being generally disapproving and unhelpful). She knows me well enough not to take this personally, and she did ask my opinion. Looking back 8 yrs later, I do wish I'd been just as honest but nicer about it. Thankfully she ignored me anyway and her gorgeous daughter suits her name. Still not too fussy on it but as Madamez says, its her and therefore beautiful. If you love it, use it. Ignore everyone else.

Aitch · 03/04/2008 14:35

dd has a wee pal called skye, it's lovely and so is she.

TartanKnickers · 03/04/2008 14:40

Oh I see - I thought you meant "decidedly council estate" in the way that the OP wouldn't want anyone thinking her daughter was one of them.......

Can't see how anyone living on a council estate would be annoyed or offended at all by your comments now you have explained.

AbbeyA · 03/04/2008 14:45

I don't like it but you should choose a name you like and not worry about it. You can't suit all the people all the time!!

Heated · 03/04/2008 14:53

I think you imbue the name. I thought Willow was a pretty, fey name until I heard it bellowed by a nasal Bianca-esque woman in a supermarket,"Will-oooow, ged 'ere" and suddenly it lost all its cachet

QuintessentialShadows · 03/04/2008 15:40

Hanaflower unless you are a scholar who have made a formal study of the use of the name Skye or Skylar, or indeed read a report you can quote, and have something more tangible to back it up with, like facts and figures, your perception of the demographical use of the name is just that: your perception. That is fine, but dont go pretend it is a fact about that name, it isnt, it is your perception.

Desiderata · 03/04/2008 16:04

You're right, Tartan. I'm not remotely offended or annoyed by hana's comments. She is a superior being, after all

It wouldn't be my place!

QuintessentialShadows · 03/04/2008 16:08

No actually, all she has said is that the skyes and skylars she knows are council. Does not mean they dont exist elsewhere. As I am sure there could be both Madeleines, Isobels, William, Godfred, Maxwell, Oscar, Oliver, Bolshek, Tristan and Sextus and Jane, and Ralph and Rocky, on council estates as well as everywhere else. She just hasnt met any. So she draws conclusions.

There there, nothing to see, step away from the sideremarks.

Back to the point, SKYE is lovely.

Harleyd, whereabouts are you?
