Me and dp have decided that we are going to call dd3 Skye.

We both have very different taste so finding at least one that we both like is nothing short of a bloody miracle!

Everyone thats been told this has screwed their faces up and made comments like "your joking"

Especially BF who made several nasty comments and is apparently taking over as soon as i've had her and demands she comes over within 24 hours of me popping her out! (erm nope!)

please someone tell me it isn't that bad

(ps everyone seemed to like the name my brother chose for his ds due in june...miecha pronounced mika, although they have changed it now but still.....)

I like it if it's a Scottish family. Sister Iona, Brother Ranald. Sur Name McTavish.

I don't like it if they just stumbled upon the name Skye and thought hey that sounds well cool.

But I am a big fuss-pot and 99% of people don't analyse the way I do .

Janni · 03/04/2008 09:32

I think it's a pretty name, but I do understand the potential for teasing because of Sky TV.

MadameCh0let · 03/04/2008 09:33

Madamez, you have a Victory? My God, Reeespek. That's a brilliant name imo.

I have a crush on the name Victor right now.. I was trying to make it popular by mentioning it every 20 minutes on the boys names thread a while back.

Victory sounds so like a name, maybe because of Anthony, Barnaby, Gregory and Jeremy. But Victory is brilliant.

brimfull · 03/04/2008 09:35

little girl in ds' class called skye,I think it's lovely

BetteNoir · 03/04/2008 09:38

Skye is fine.

From your thread title I was expecting names like Incontinentia, Phlegm or Gonorreah.

Although now I realise that Gonorreah is a boys' name, of course.

hippipotami · 03/04/2008 09:44

I think Skye is a beautiful name.

I also think your friend is not behaving like a best friend. Regardless of her feelings about the name, her behaviour is unacceptable and she would not be my friend any longer.

TartanKnickers · 03/04/2008 09:44

Skye is a gorgeous name. I wanted to my DD Skye, but dh thought it was too hippy - wish I had used it now......

Definately not council estate (what a horrible expression anyway) or chavvy.

I also like Lewis, Harris and Islay - could have a bit of an island theme going on LOL

bobsmum · 03/04/2008 09:45

Lots of Skyes/Ionas/Islas etc round here - doesn't seem so uncommon in Scotland. My first thought would have been the island, not the satellite dish if that helps!

Tis lovely IMO

bobsmum · 03/04/2008 09:46

I would love Ailsa (after Ailsa Craig on the west cost) but dh has vetoed it - he's English and says no one would know how to pronounce it

solo · 03/04/2008 10:12

That's rubbish! My hairdresser is a Scot called Ailsa...there's nothing difficult about pronouncing that! I'm English BTW.

rosealbie · 03/04/2008 10:15

People are so rude. I wouldn't care what anyone else thought anyway.

For what it's worth, I think Skye is a beautiful name, very pretty.

cyteen · 03/04/2008 10:20

I think Skye is lovely and certainly not 'decidedly council estate', whatever that means. Which just goes to show that people's associations are as individual as any other opinion. Tell your friends and family to have some manners and not be so crass

harleyd · 03/04/2008 11:23

'decidedly council estate'
my arent you up your own arse hanaflower

madamez i havent ever heard of victory used as a name before, i like it , vj is cool

quint, i have a kai too. i havent really heard it much here

and as i said earlier, skye is pretty, if you like it then go for it no matter what people say

twirlymum · 03/04/2008 11:43

My 7 yr old dd is Skye, and I love it. She has never had the sky/sky+ thing ever. My dh's family are descended from the Isle of Skye, so that's where we got it from. Her middle name is Laura, after my sister, and I think they go well together. The only thing is, with a one syllable name people tend to lengthen it, as opposed to shortening a long name. We sometimes call her Skyemondo for some bizarre reason!!??

Skye lovely - I'd think of the island as well (cf Iona). Go for it .

I love Victory as a name

EffiePerine · 03/04/2008 12:00

or maybe Victoire

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 03/04/2008 12:07

I like Skye, its popular in Australia.
Ignore the doubters - people are sooo rude

gingerninja · 03/04/2008 12:08

I like it

sweetkitty · 03/04/2008 12:12

The thing is no matter which name you chose you will always get someone who dislikes it so go with a name YOU love and sod everyone else.

When MIL heard DD2s name her reaction was "well at least she's healthy " but this week she did say that she has grown to like her name and it really suits her.

luckylady74 · 03/04/2008 12:23

It is a lovely name, but if it bothers you -despite what some posters have said - the schools I've heard it in are the estate fed schools - to me this is of no importance -I first heard my dd's name in the same schools!

kerala · 03/04/2008 12:30

Tip - never ever disclose the name before the baby is born. If you bandy suggestions around people weigh in with their criticisms. This happened to us so when we hit on the name we would use we didnt tell a single soul not even our parents. Then when the baby is born you can then announce that her name is Ethelreda Twizzlewitette Latisha and everyone has to pretend to love it.

Doobydoo · 03/04/2008 12:31

I like it...alot Please don't worry about what other people think. They are damn rude

Doobydoo · 03/04/2008 12:32

Oh and we never told people beforehand the name's of our 2 boys

eternalstudent · 03/04/2008 12:34

I think it's fine.
