Me and dp have decided that we are going to call dd3 Skye.

We both have very different taste so finding at least one that we both like is nothing short of a bloody miracle!

Everyone thats been told this has screwed their faces up and made comments like "your joking"

Especially BF who made several nasty comments and is apparently taking over as soon as i've had her and demands she comes over within 24 hours of me popping her out! (erm nope!)

please someone tell me it isn't that bad

(ps everyone seemed to like the name my brother chose for his ds due in june...miecha pronounced mika, although they have changed it now but still.....)

I love Victory John. In fact, if I'd read that 8 weeks ago when having DS2, I'd have shamelessly nicked it.

Joash · 03/04/2008 00:52

I think before naming a child you should think about the possibilities for other people (and not only kids) taking the 'p'. TBH Skye is a bit 'chavvy' and as soon as I read it, I di start thinking about Sky TV and Sky+ (sorry) but on the other hand I have heard far, far worse.

iliketosleep · 03/04/2008 00:59

I think in total honesty though you can find a pisstake for any name.

For example my name is jackie and ive gone through my whole like with rhyming slang for it for example jackie the paki if anyone said it now i would lamp them!!

also there is play on my full name jacqueline

nothing that rhymes with it but the emphasis on it if you know what i mean

jak-A-leeeeeeeeen

really pisses me off although now they just get told to shut the f**k up

Will anyone else reveal their unusual Dc's names?

My Dd is...

I'm just not brave enough!

Joash · 03/04/2008 01:05

Thats true, I just feel that children have enought to contend with without lumbering them with an obvious 'moniker'. I do quite like Skye - but it does conjour up all sorts of images of some of the people who live around here (not nice ones either).

DS (aged 18) has what I think is an everyday sounding name - Ashley - but that caused enough bloody problems with my brother who I remember insisted that there was no way he would use it (he thought it was a girls name)and would call DS Lee for short. As it happened we don't know any other male adult called Ashley and everyone calls him Ash anyway now.

Joash · 03/04/2008 01:06

ooo - I have an aunt called Jacqueline and I've never met another one.

Joash · 03/04/2008 01:07

And this was from a Man with Grenville as his middle name

hotchocscot · 03/04/2008 01:08

well i think Skye is a lovely name, and not chavvy at all. Altho', as you may have guessed, I'm scottish and here in my part of Ecosse we associate the name with the beautiful island on our west coast, not satellite tv. Island names are quite popular actually, Harris and Lewis for boys, Skye and Isla(y) for girls etc. Go for it, she's your girl and you'll know if its right. BTW, is she here yet or still a bump?

BrassicMonkey · 03/04/2008 01:15

I think your friends are being ridiculous. Skye won't be to everyone's taste but neither will any name.

I agree about finding a piss-take version of every name btw. I used to get called Jenny-Johnny by a horrible boy at school

iliketosleep · 03/04/2008 02:05

Yes joash i know what you mean, i didnt take it personally

I know a family that really arent very nice at all but the kids have the prettiest names but everytime i hear them i think of this family....
Ashley was very popular when i was at school but ive never seen a skye round here, strange

I HATE my name with a passion! always have, when i was younger i was ashamed to say it! I used to go red!! how daft is that lol

hotchocscot- she is still a 20 week bump

BrassicMonkey- kids can be so cruel although its made me very thick skinned now so i suppose its not too bad! Jennifer/jenny was on my list but dp said no!!

iliketosleep · 03/04/2008 02:05

c'mon solo tell us!!!!

BrassicMonkey · 03/04/2008 02:12

I'm really glad your DP said no to Jenny/Jennifer .

Joash · 03/04/2008 02:20

Iliketosleep - My name is Jayne (there were 10 Jayne/Jane's in my class alone at junior school and my middle name is Mary and I used to hate anyone knowing what my middle name wasuntil I got older and I love it now, I was named after my Gran. Plus the only other Jane I know lives over 800 miles from me now lol

GooseyLoosey · 03/04/2008 06:20

Wow - you know some rude people. It is not hideous at all. To be as honest as I can be, I would not have chosen it for my dcs but then this holds true of very many of the names I come across. However, I would absolutely not bat an eyelid at anyone who did or secretly think (as I sometimes do - God what were you thinking).

Go for it! I have this theory that people grow into their names and Skye sounds a happy peaceful name to me.

shoshe · 03/04/2008 06:58

iliketosleep my DD was Chynna Skye, sadly we lost her shortly after birth in 1990.

DGD is a Skye as well tho

Its a beautiful name, and dont let anyone else tell you different.

geordieminx · 03/04/2008 07:01

My 20 year old cousin is Belinda, normal enough name - alas no - at schoool she go bell-ender.

My name is Heather - used to get heifer at school. . Desparately wanted a "normal" name like claire or helen or sarah that were all "popular" but now I love my name, even though I live in Scotland there are very few people i have met with the same name.

I love the fact that it is "my name" and most of my life anyone who knows me who hears my name thinks of me - not half a dozen other people. IYSWIM?

I think Skye is a lovely name btw.

sorkycake · 03/04/2008 07:13

Skye is not a common name, Sophie, Emily etc are common names.
The trick to naming a child imho is to decide on the name and tell no fecker until the birth.

The world and his wife will say all sorts of rude things about names whilst you're pg, but once baby is here they don't usually say anything.

Either ditch your loony friend or wait until she's pg and ridicule every ugly choice of name, insensitive moo!

We tend to have ridiculous default names for our unborn.

We've had dd-minkymoo, ds1-spud & ds2-muffyjo .

Whenever anyone asked what we were going to call them we would give the comedy name.

I say go for something a little unusual rather than boring and predictable. But please don't call your kid muffyjo

ProfYaffle · 03/04/2008 07:22

I really like Skye, sounds gently hippyish to me, not chavvy. My dds have unusual names, dd2's name was not received well by my pil but they like it now.

Keep the name - ditch your mate.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 03/04/2008 07:48

Not too keen on Skye, mainly as I can't think of further diminutives for it.

harleyd · 03/04/2008 07:52

its a lovely name

Same as hanaflower.

sweetkitty · 03/04/2008 08:08

This is why I tell noone the name we have chosen for DD3 (well apart from everyone on here).

People always have opinion on names and they have their favourites and if you say something unusual then you get the nose wrinking IME.

Better to say we haven't decided yet then announce it when she is born "this is DD3 called Grisella" then they cannot say a thing or if they do they are very rude.

QuintessentialShadows · 03/04/2008 08:24

My youngest is Kai. I love his name, my dh loves his name. When we announced to my family that this was his name, they mostly wrinkled their noses. They said it was hard, too short, a name for an old man, does not suit our family, and it is ugly.

We said, tough, you will soon get to know him, love him and see past his name, he will be Kai, a gorgeous loveable baby boy. (You can see him on my profile with my dh)

Skye is lovely (I imagine it is pronounced like Kai but with an S first?) forget what people say.

I also like Victory John and the story behind it.

MrsMattie · 03/04/2008 08:37

I like Skye - very pretty. Ignore people. Very few liked the name we chose for our son, but we did, and that's what matters.
