Baby girl name - impossible

Indigolds · 23/03/2024 00:10

DH and I are expecting our first baby, a little girl, next month. We are finding picking a name impossible.

We don't mind but also don't really want to use these names

  • Ruby
  • Amber
  • Summer
  • Anna
  • Leah
  • Maya
  • Elena (Eh-lay-nah)

I think we want a name that evokes a feeling of warmth and adventure. Basically we have a concept for a name but not a name!!
We don't want anything too out there but nothing too popular either. Just an established well known name that's ideally not top 30-50.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!!

Why would you pick a name for a someone you haven't even met yet. No wonder you're finding it impossible. Do you also name your pets before you meet them?

Meet her first and see what name feels like it suits her.

I thought it was normal to have at least a shortlist?

Yes of course it's normal to have a shortlist!

A very rough shortlist sure. But not to 'pick' a name. Well tbh...that might be common too. But it's silly when you actually think about it.

Even a shortlist of names tbh... what if she doesn't feel like a warm adventurer? What if she seems more like a grumpy librarian?

Nothing wrong with having names you like but no need to decide anything until you have an idea of who you're naming.

Because you want to spend time choosing names.
Because you don't want to find out that the name means something else entirely in a different language.
Because you don't want to choose a name that suits a newborn dressed in pastel colours without considering if the name will suit a woman in the army/boardroom etc.
Because you want to gauge the popularity of a name before realising you've called her the most popular name of the decade.
Because you don't want to call her a name that seems cute while you're full of hormones and stressed about being a new mum.
Because you have time now to think and reflect on names without the pressure of time constraints and people asking you her name.
Because it helps you bond with the baby before it is born if you have a few names you like.

Of course it is usual to have a short list OP.

Aw, come on, lighten up, everyone makes a baby name list before they have a baby. It's surely part of the fun and joy of the life to come?

Pinkbonbon · 23/03/2024 00:28

I'm not saying theres anything wrong with a list of possibilities. But op says "pick a name". Don't pick a name before you even meet the kid!

Sorry you're being so pedantic!!!

Obviously we aren't going to set it in stone, I just meant we are finding it hard to find any names we really love!!

@Indigolds I cannot suggest warmth and adventure but can suggest names which don't feature on the popularity chart,

Anna (or Annabel)
Jane
Tara
Venetia
Celia
Electra

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/03/2024 00:39

Warmth and adventure - I’m imagining probably shortish and well used internationally but not super popular in the UK? Maybe Nina, Lara, Julia, Anya, Mila or Stella?

And sometimes it’s even harder to choose a name once they’re here- what with all the hormones and exhaustion 🤣So I agree having a (preferably very short!) shortlist ahead of time is the way to go.

RogueFemale · 23/03/2024 00:39

And Apple. I'm not a Gwyneth fan but I do like her daughter's name.

Good grief. Do bore off and stop attacking the OP for doing something perfectly normal and reasonable

What an absolutely wild post to write to an expectant mother on a parenting website, on the baby naming board of all places. As if thinking of names for your child is the weirdest thing ever. Loopy.

Most people think about names for their kids and their pets before they have them yes.
