Baby girl name - impossible

Indigolds · 23/03/2024 00:10

DH and I are expecting our first baby, a little girl, next month. We are finding picking a name impossible.

We don't mind but also don't really want to use these names

  • Ruby
  • Amber
  • Summer
  • Anna
  • Leah
  • Maya
  • Elena (Eh-lay-nah)

I think we want a name that evokes a feeling of warmth and adventure. Basically we have a concept for a name but not a name!!
We don't want anything too out there but nothing too popular either. Just an established well known name that's ideally not top 30-50.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!!

Lucia feels warm and sunny to me! I like it for our baby due in August for exactly that reason, but DH has vetoed sadly.

I'm not saying theres anything wrong with a list of possibilities. But op says "pick a name". Don't pick a name before you even meet the kid!

Most people pick a name in advance, don’t they?
Has anyone ever actually looked at their newborn and said “Oh God, we can’t call him David now, he looks like a Gregory. What a shame”?!

Icehockeyflowers · 23/03/2024 16:15

Imo the reason you’re finding it difficult might be because you don’t feel a connection to a name. What adventurers do you admire? It doesn’t matter what names other people like although the list in your original post are very popular names so perhaps deep down they are the types of names you prefer. Only you can answer that.

Female explorer’s names include -
Harriet
Tania
Alexis
Felicity
Gertrude
Ann
Jean
Carol
Mabel
Laura
Isabelle
Nancy
Nellie (Nell maybe?)
Louise
Beatrix
Berthe
Jane
Charlotte
Aimee
Eva
Amelia
Enid
Alma
Satah
Elizabeth
Nicole
Ella
Dervla
Marianne
Doeothy
Odetfe
Kate
Jessica
Gabrielle
Aloha
Agusta

Many of the above can be shortened to a cool nickname but ultimately you need to feel a connection to a name if you want an association.

I absolutely adore Alma, I'm just struggling to imagine a teen/early 20s called Alma if you know what I mean?

But people become their names. Don’t name a baby. Name a person. There are so many Polly/Holly/Molly/Milly/Lily/Daisy/Maisie names - they are incredibky bland. I’d prefer to be named Alma any day!

Why wouldn't Alma suit a teen? If you'd asked me 30 years ago, I'd have said the same of Amelia or Sophia, but those are now completely normal teenager names.
If Alma suits your baby, it will suit her as a teenager and an adult too.

I like Alma. It's got more to it than most in your OP.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 23/03/2024 19:18

Alma is really nice (it’s also the name of one of my local pubs). Children grow into their names as teens/adults.

I mean I know an Elsie who’s now 13 but I also knew an old woman called Elsie.

Philandbill · 23/03/2024 19:23

Genuine sympathies OP. We decided on DD1's name (while I was pregnant,) in a couple of minutes. Conversation went like this-
Me- What do you think of for a name?
DH- Yes, good idea, let's go for that.
Me- Excellent

Thinking of a names for a second girl was a nightmare when pregnant with DD2. I bought a baby name book and we both went through it separately and listed every name we could both tolerate. Then we vetoed any we didn't like on the other's list. Took ages but we eventually decided on a name I loved and he was ok with. My mum wasn't keen (I think) but we waited until baby was born until we told anyone so there's less they can say then 😁

Notreat · 23/03/2024 19:27

I don't understand this attitude. You can't tell what will suit a newborn. You have to register their name within 6 weeks in the UK earlier in some countries. Her character won't have developed by then!
Both my children were named before they were born as were all children in my family. They then grow into the name and you can't imagine them being anything else.

Alma is popular internationally ( its top 100 in at least a dozen countries) but relatively underused in the UK at the moment-as well and short and sweet and easy to say and spell. Its not my personal cup of tea ( it sounds a bit retro to me) but I think it fits your brief very well. A teen/ early 20’s who doesn’t like it or wants a nn will just call herself Allie I would think?

charlottelovesnames3 · 24/03/2024 09:30

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Here are some names I thought have a similar feel to the ones you mentioned/

Sienna
Rosa
Palmer
Kaia
Cara
Emilia
Sofia
Lillian

I love the name Alma too and I think it’s perfect for all stages of life, so cute for a baby and child, unique but cool for a teenage, respectable but not boring or bland for an adult. I think your daughter will grow into her name so if you love Alma, go for it!
