Baby girl name - impossible

DH and I are expecting our first baby, a little girl, next month. We are finding picking a name impossible.

We don't mind but also don't really want to use these names

  • Ruby
  • Amber
  • Summer
  • Anna
  • Leah
  • Maya
  • Elena (Eh-lay-nah)

I think we want a name that evokes a feeling of warmth and adventure. Basically we have a concept for a name but not a name!!
We don't want anything too out there but nothing too popular either. Just an established well known name that's ideally not top 30-50.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!!

Wow, didn't realise until reading this thread how absolutely wild we were choosing a name for our daughter before she was born!

KirstenBlest · 14/08/2024 08:37

@sel2223 , what you did was outrageous. Has she called Childline about it?

We were expecting a baby. We should have spent 9 months thinking, 'We'll just wait until the baby turns up then we'll start thinking what name she or he looks like."

Has Liberty been suggested yet? That has a sense of freedom.

I feel totally outrageous 🤣🤣

It took us that long to agree on a name, if we waited she'd have been nameless for months poor thing

Gosh, I love the vibe you're going for - warmth and adventure is a gorgeous concept. Amber, Ruby and Summer all really work for it. But I LOVE previous poster's suggestion of Ember. And someone said Sienna which fits. I can't think of any more immediately but I wonder if lists of paint names (e.g. burnt umber, saffron yellow, sienna etc) might be a good place to look. Or warm colour jewels and precious stones like amber and ruby... jasper, for a boy would be a good one. Spices? Or places? India, maybe? The Indias I've known have been warm, hippy, adventurer types.

Most people pick a name in advance, don’t they?
Has anyone ever actually looked at their newborn and said “Oh God, we can’t call him David now, he looks like a Gregory. What a shame”?!

Yes, we did with dc2. I remember seeing him and thinking he doesn’t look like an x . Dh agreed so we ended up reversing his intended first and middle name, so instead of xy Smith, he became yx Smith.

@roshi42 , OP's baby was due in April.

@Teacupsandrollups , yes. DN didn't look anything like any of the names on the shortlist. The baby was given a vintage name that was unusual at the time but is far more popular now.

HarpyBirthday · 21/08/2024 22:46

Pippa
Matilda
Joan
Dora
Alison
