Nickname for a girl named Sunday

Hi all,

I’m pregnant with my second daughter, due in a few weeks weeks and we’ve decided to name her Sunday. I’d love some nickname ideas that aren’t “Sunny”.

Middle name will be Victoria just as an FYI.

Thanks all!

Please consider them as an adult. And I think you've misunderstood nicknames are meant to be invented by friends/family/the person themselves. I think you mean a shorter version of the name. Which it doesn' need.

rockingbird · 18/03/2024 14:01

Doris, as in Doris 'day'

Sundays child is full of grace. Maybe Gracie or Grace.

Sorry, am afraid that is not correct:

Monday's child is fair of face
Tuesday's child is full of grace
Wednesday's child is full of woe
Thursday's child has far to go
Friday's child is loving and giving
Saturday's child works hard for a living
But the child that is born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

Hope you are OK @DeepBrickFox and recovering from being battered by Mumsnet. It seems a lot of people here have very old-fashioned ideas about names. They need to get hip to today's vibe, daddi-o!

scoobysnaxx · 18/03/2024 15:34

As per @LauderSyme below... Blythe?

Lifeinlists · 18/03/2024 18:13

@WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat

Why would they - the school also has a little girl called Diamond, two boys called Cosmo, a boy called Bear and a twin girls name Chilli and Scout,

Cosmo is a name that's been around for centuries. Not common but definitely a name.
The rest of those examples make me wonder if the countries that have prescribed lists of names are onto something.

mitogoshi · 18/03/2024 18:19

I've met a few Sunday's in the past - all men of African descent, or rather born there rather than generations ago. Never heard it for a girl

louderthan · 18/03/2024 22:20

Knickerbocker
Or Archer (as in Archers omnibus)

KirstenBlest · 18/03/2024 22:46

How about Bellson as a 'nn', short for Bells on Sunday?
or Best - from Sunday Best.

46mumof6 · 19/03/2024 02:34

Love it, only a few days of the week work for names, Sunday being one of them

I love Tuesday and did think to use it but had gone normal with my 2 older boys so stuck with normal

Wednesday is really only the other day option but Addams family always

I don't think it needs a nickname, if you call her by her it hopefully she will stop people calling her Sunny when she is older

No. Too similar to Belsen.

They're all the same number of syllables or longer, though.

Plus Dominga is great if you grow up in a Spanish-speaking country, but it's highly unfortunate in an English-speaking context.

Nicknames and diminutives are not always shorter, though, and are sometimes longer...

Thomas - Tommy
James - Jimmy
Rose - Rosie, etc.

People are being such rude twats on this thread. There's really no need.
I think Sunday is a nice name, but would lean towards Sunny as a NN.

KirstenBlest · 19/03/2024 10:29

@sashh , it was a joke. A pp said Archer because The Archers omnibus is broadcast on Sundays. An early Sunday morning slot on Radio 4 is called Bells on Sunday.

Why does she need a nickname? Just use her actual name - presumably you like it!

I can't understand the need (trend?) to use a nickname at all.

ChanelNo19EDT · 17/03/2024 20:35

Domenica, Dominga, Dominique, De Domhnaigh

No, not Dominga! Domingas is slang for tits in Spanish!

Katiesaidthat · 19/03/2024 10:42

By the way, for what it´s worth, I like Sunday. As for short versions, it is a short name. Ignore your sister in law, or whoever the busybody was, these things come more naturally when you see what your daughter is actually like. Because calling her Sunny and then she is a woe is me person would sound weird.

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 19/03/2024 10:42

Ah, I didn't know that Dominga also sounded like something less than ideal to have for a name in Spanish as well!

SKG231 · 19/03/2024 10:46

Sunday just reminds me of Ferne McCann shouting it out to her daughter in a god awful Essex accent. SUNDAYYYYYY

What if you call her Sunday and she's more of a Friday person?!

The issue I would have with the nickname Sunny is that it sounds masculine and like you are saying Sonny. It's yet another reason why Sunday isn't a good name for a human.

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 19/03/2024 10:54

There was a thread some time ago, and it seems that there are a number of parents out there calling their daughters Sonny. No idea why; to me, it's a bit like naming your son Missy.

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 19/03/2024 10:57

I could maybe come to terms with Sandé as a 'neo-name' for a girl - especially if you're a big fan of Emeli.

Depending on your accent, it might not sound very different from how you'd pronounce Sunday.

Sonny? For a girl? That's bloody awful even for a boy!

I like Sunny (for a girl) though.

Isometimeswonder · 19/03/2024 12:09

It's pronounced exactly the same though so in conversation sounds like the same name?

Hey OP, if you do decide to continue to read, I'm sorry you felt the need to log off from your own thread. Mumsnet can be a wonderfully supportive place sometimes, but it is also full of try-hard wanna be mean girls, and just deeply unpleasant people (as evidenced here). Ignore them, they thrive on drama and attention.

Fwiw, I think Sunday is a beautiful name. I know one, and know of another. The former is a friend of my eldest child. She is 21 and just goes by Sunday. Lovely young woman, her name really suits her. The latter is in my youngest child's primary school - year 4, so 8 or 9yo. She goes by DayDay by friends and some of the teachers. None of the kids bat an eyelid at her name. Why would they - the school also has a little girl called Diamond, two boys called Cosmo, a boy called Bear and a twin girls name Chilli and Scout, all of which I would argue are more unusual than Sunday.

Congratulations on your baby OP.

Yes to this.

It's no wonder bullying is a problem in schools if parents have such a mean streak.

Obviously nothing to you, and lots of others. I found it rather rude in tone, and frankly I was taken aback by it. Yes that is no doubt a "me" problem. I just wonder if you would be so coarse as to talk to somebody like that in rl, when completely unwarranted.

Yes, I swear in real life. What makes it warranted?
