What about Daphne?

Wondered what people think about the name Daphne? Potentially with Hannah as a middle name.

Not sure if we're having a boy or a girl yet, will find out in a couple of weeks. DS has a very traditional family name (like Thomas or James).

Thank you! Alternative suggestions also welcome.

I really like it, classic but not overused. Congratulations hope it all goes well for you

oldnorsesaga · 09/03/2024 17:34

I love Daphne, lovely name.

BaronessBomburst · 09/03/2024 17:36

Beautiful name! And not one you hear every day.

HelloDarlingWhatAreYouDoingHere · 09/03/2024 17:43

Really lovely - also love Penelope.

NeeNaw12 · 09/03/2024 17:45

Thanks everyone! I like Penelope too, but we have a long surname so wonder if it might be too syllable-y.

Lovely, but very likely to become Daffy.

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/03/2024 17:48

I really love Daphne! I don’t know why it’s so underused! A fantastic name.

Joolsin · 09/03/2024 17:54

I really like it. Elegant and classic, but would also be very cute on a little girl

Daphers is definitely better than Daffy. I often call my son Monkey Nuts - you don't really know what kind of silly nickname will stick.

Glad it appears to be a thumbs up. I haven't met a baby Daphne, so wasn't sure what people would make of it.

Love it. Not great with Hannah, but perfectly okay.

MKWarrier · 09/03/2024 18:15

I encountered a toddler Daphne just a couple of days ago - the first Daphne I’ve met in real life of any age, and thought it was cute! Does make me think of Frasier but that’s no bad thing.

herebehippos · 09/03/2024 18:16

Gorgeous name- I know a teenaged one and the name is much admired

NeeNaw12 · 09/03/2024 19:16

@Sussurations the middle name is after someone close to me. I think it's tricky as a middle name, not much seems to go well with it. But I'd like to use it.

Reminds me of Scooby-Do!

Donthideyourlight · 09/03/2024 19:26

I like it. I know one who I think is 7yo

HoldingTheDoor · 09/03/2024 19:27

Daphne is such an unattractive name. I’ll never understand the love for it. Penelope is much nicer.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 09/03/2024 19:29

I like it but I was put off selecting it due to daft and daffy sounding close to it.

Bobbybobbins · 09/03/2024 19:31

The one I know has Dee as a nickname which she likes.

mum1345 · 09/03/2024 19:32

I can't see the appeal for Daphne either, sorry!
I wouldn't want to be called that and can't imagine a teenager with that name.
I think you could probably find some good nicknames for when they are younger though x

All2Well · 09/03/2024 19:33

It's on the way up as a name in terms of popularity thanks to Bridgerton along with names like Otis and Maeve (Sex Education) so it's becoming liked by the Netflix generation and wouldn't be too out there.

I do see it as granny name so it's not for me personally...at a push I'd prefer Delphine or Delphi. Similar sound but a bit less "granny".

And reminds me less of getting annoyed by Daphne and Celeste (of Oooh stick you fame) as a teenager.

FrostyFroggy · 09/03/2024 19:38

I've loved it since reading Malory Towers (Darrell's younger sister) and I have since known two older ladies with that name. I think it's very overdue for a comeback!

WhizzWoman · 09/03/2024 19:39

I love it. It's a brilliant name. Don't worry about whether it goes with the middle name. No one uses their full name.

EasternEcho · 09/03/2024 19:43

I like the name Daphne albeit only ever heard it in the sitcom Frasier.
