What about Daphne?

NeeNaw12 · 09/03/2024 17:31

Wondered what people think about the name Daphne? Potentially with Hannah as a middle name.

Not sure if we're having a boy or a girl yet, will find out in a couple of weeks. DS has a very traditional family name (like Thomas or James).

Thank you! Alternative suggestions also welcome.

Yes, for errr baby name "research" purposes or something 😄

Absolutely 😇 Though past it really....i read the series in 1978 👵

@NeeNaw12 If your son’s name is a traditionally popular (ie. top 100 one) , I doubt it would sound overly Austenesque with Charlotte- as that is popular too.People are more likely to just assume you like classic, traditional names 😁Maybe if you’d gone for something like Georgiana and Fitzwilliam together it would be different 🤣

DodgeDoggie · 10/03/2024 13:04

I like it, also Delphine?

dollybird · 10/03/2024 13:50

I had an auntie Daphne. She would've been 86 now.

NeeNaw12 · 10/03/2024 13:53

@IamnotwhouthinkIam maybe if it's a boy we could go with Fitzwilliam. My 2yo son's name is William. It wouldn't be an odd choice at all.

Sorry but I don't like it all. The only one I know is 98 years old .
I was given an unpopular name from the 1930's but born in the seventies and I have always hated having such an old fashioned name.

Nicebloomers · 10/03/2024 14:43

Very pretty. It really works through all the ages.

Snugglemonkey · 10/03/2024 14:58

Love it!

CatherinedeBourgh · 09/03/2024 17:46

Lovely, but very likely to become Daffy.

It's my DGM's name, and nobody's ever shortened it AFAIK. She's 94. I think it's a lovely name.

Esgaroth · 10/03/2024 18:25

It's my late great grandmother's name, who lived until she was 98, so to me it conjures up an image of a very old woman. It's as unappealing for me as Mervyn and Phyllis, two of her many siblings. But she died last century so I can see that objectively enough time has passed for that generation to sound fresh again.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/03/2024 21:58

@NeeNaw12 My only DC is a William😁 So although I don’t know if I’ll have another dc yet, I am very curious about what you’ll end up picking for a dd.

If it helps I did have some very classic girls names on my list - Anna, Caroline, Eleanor, Elizabeth Rose, Theresa, Susanna. I had Charlotte too but couldn’t get over that I prefer the sound of similar Juliet ( but can’t use it).

But I did have some more eclectic ones on the list too - like Eve, Verity, Rosamund/Rosalind, Claudia, Helena, Marina and Lara. The good thing about William is I think it works with most well known names - as long as they aren’t too unusual ( for example I prefer the sound of Persephone to Penelope but think that would be a bit weird with much more commonplace William 🤣).

RosePombear · 10/03/2024 22:07

I love Daphne but I think it will become quite trendy. A lot of baby name YouTubers/instagrammers/tik tokkers that I follow have been including Daphne in their lists lately.

RogueFemale · 11/03/2024 01:31

Daphne is a gorgeous name; also a great strong female myth.

But I loathe the name Hannah. Horribly wholesome and biblical in a bad way.

If it's a girl and you go with Daphne, then give her a prettier middle name than Hannah - something sweet and simple like Emma or Alice or Jane.

@IamnotwhouthinkIam maybe if it's a boy we could go with Fitzwilliam. My 2yo son's name is William. It wouldn't be an odd choice at all.

"Fitz" means "son of" so it might be an odd choice unless your husband's name is William.

It's also a surname prefix once used for the illegitimate children of English kings.

KitchenSinkLlama · 11/03/2024 01:40

We had an aunt Daphne. She was an amazing woman. Go for it! May your daughter be amazing too.

mathanxiety · 11/03/2024 01:49

Lovely name.

Very stylish.

Franker · 11/03/2024 02:10

I know a little Daphne, 7 years I think. It's a fabulous name OP. Also love Penelope.

MariaVT65 · 11/03/2024 02:58

I love Daphne!

OctaviaRedQueen · 11/03/2024 12:42

William and Daphne. Nice.

beefmassaman · 11/03/2024 13:06

I love this name! I suggested it for my first born 13 years ago but was quickly shut down. It's so cool!

Parrotseatthemall · 11/03/2024 17:25

I like it a lot. I also have taken a liking to Agatha after seeing Raye on the Brits the other night (her grandmother). Daffy is actually quite a sweet nn (the duck isn't that well known these days afterall)

Daphne wasn't Darrell's sister (think it was Felicity?). She was the girl who stole and then became Mary Lou's BFF.

Anyway, love a Mallory Towers name! Really like Daphne but my DH has vetoed it 😭

Darrell’s best friend Sally’s little sister was a Daphne.
And the other Daphne wasn’t a nice character.
I think the name is beautiful though

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/03/2024 17:45

Delphine is nicer.

NeeNaw12 · 11/03/2024 19:21

Thanks all!

@IamnotwhouthinkIam I really like Verity too. I have a long surname that starts with F, and I'm not sure it goes with a F surname? They might be a slightly difficult to pronounce together? I love Anna as well.

@RogueFemale DS has my surname. DS's first name is a family name. I thought it would be nice to use the name of a female family member as a middle name, because so far only the male names have been passed on. Unfortunately there's a lot of... very 70s names for the women! So Hannah (from my generation) seems like the best of the bunch.

Goodness this is getting outing!!

I do like Delphine and Delphi but they're not ... quite my style? I get that it's supposed to be about the child 🙂

By the way, DP has a thing about names that are classic but have more than one shortening e.g. Charlotte, Lottie, Charlie. He's thinking then they can have a formal name and a couple of nicknames they can decide on as they get older. So if anyone has any suggestions for more girl names like that, they'd also be very welcome! Obviously there's also Catherine and Elizabeth. Thanks
