What about Daphne?

Wondered what people think about the name Daphne? Potentially with Hannah as a middle name.

Not sure if we're having a boy or a girl yet, will find out in a couple of weeks. DS has a very traditional family name (like Thomas or James).

Thank you! Alternative suggestions also welcome.

By the way, DP has a thing about names that are classic but have more than one shortening e.g. Charlotte, Lottie, Charlie. He's thinking then they can have a formal name and a couple of nicknames they can decide on as they get older. So if anyone has any suggestions for more girl names like that, they'd also be very welcome! Obviously there's also Catherine and Elizabeth. Thanks

I'd stick with Daphne.

I had an Aunt Daphne and know a 5 year old called Daphne. Both were/are called Daffy.

You're right! Thank you for putting me straight. I must read them again!

I found them again when clearing out and re read them lol
I just yearned to be at Malory Towers when I was 10 (though worried that I wouldn't be too good at sport) 😂

@NeeNaw12 Unfortunately there's a lot of... very 70s names for the women! So Hannah (from my generation) seems like the best of the bunch.

What are the other possible 70s names?

Honor.

I really like it, but if you must have Hannah as a middle name I think Penelope goes better.

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/03/2024 19:47

Beatrice Hannah

Ooh yes Genevieve is a lovely name. Genie/ Gena/ Vivvie

I know a couple of little Daphne’s - presumably it’s got a bit of a Bridgerton boost and has that sort of 60s/70s vibe that I think is coming into fashion now the 1940s names are considered a bit overdone.

Rockmehardplace · 11/03/2024 21:46

Awful name imo, id hate to be called Daphne, sounds frumpy & sounds like Daftie to me!

whay about Susannah, Georgina or Evangaline?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/03/2024 22:07

@NeeNaw12 It might be obvious but if William is a family name too (it is for us as well!) , have you tried looking in your family tree for first name picks that might have come back into fashion again - thinking your or DH’s great grandparents or even great- great grandparents?

I also personally don’t think it matters for middle names if the family you most want to honour have 70’s names 🤣Most people won’t know your DD’s middle name/s so imo it doesn’t matter so much if it sounds dated.

First name is definitely important though - part of the reason I love William is the wide variety of nn’s ( Will, Billy, Liam), so other traditional names with good nn potential:

Antonia (Anna, Anya, Nina, Nia)
Victoria (Vita, Vika, Tia, Plum)
Christina (Kit, Kitty, Christy, Chrissy)
Helena (Nell, Leni, Ella, Ellie)
Josephine (Effie, Sephie, Josie, Posy)

I quite like Faith. Don’t hear that name anymore.

TabithaTwitchel · 12/03/2024 06:31

Why not go the whole hog and consider Dorcas? 😀

Mercurial123 · 12/03/2024 06:42

It's awful.

I have a 6 year old Daphne. We are in the UK and was inspired my Daphne Moon from Fraser. I love it. Did you decide?

Only if you spell it Daphnea

Firsttimebabymummy · 04/09/2024 11:26
