Irish baby boy names

I am looking for a less common Irish boys name. I already have a Pádraig, well know but not very popular, 20/30 per year going by the CSO

In the family we already have Peadar, Fionn, Tadhg, Cathal, Cillian, Seán, Odhran.

If baby is a girl she'll be called Fionnuala.

Also we are Irish living in Ireland. I loved Ruairí the last time but I was worried he would be called Rory a lot.

I love Oisín but that's mega popular here, I also like Rossa, not very popular, and Finley but not sure if that's more Scottish

Geebray · 28/02/2024 12:51

One of my faves is Malachy.

Mittens1717 · 28/02/2024 13:02

My son was going to be Iarla or Naoise.

I also love Ferdia.

I like Tiarnán, though every single one I've known was a terrile pain in the ass.

Somebody called their baby the Hound of Culann???

I suppose it would be an excellent dog name, now that I think of it. For something like a tiny, handbag-sized chihuahua.

Ballygowenwater · 28/02/2024 13:48

Yep, she’s fairly well known on social media, a stylist. Wouldn’t be for me but it certainly fits the less well known brief.

Jaysis, is all I can say.

Iarla is one of my favourites but I live in England and would have been horrendous without the “r”.

Cormac is great and solid.

Also like Cuan, Rossa, Senan.

Yes, that's why we passed! See also 'OH-la' for Orla/Orlaith.

MacTíre
Tóran
Setanta

Trianglesandsquares · 28/02/2024 14:13

Cavan was one of our names. It means handsome.

Hiddendoor · 28/02/2024 14:17

Big fan of Oisín

pontipinemum · 28/02/2024 14:18

Thanks everyone. I really like Daithí I think it's sort of fun and but still a 'proper name' but Daithí O Se annoys me and another Daithí I know is an absolute dose. So put me off!

We have a Liam, Feilim, Conor, Seamus, Tomás in the family also.

I'm not sure we are posh enough for Lorcan

I like Eoghan I have a 1st cousin Eoin but I think that's ok

@Trianglesandsquares I live really close to Cavan so it wouldn't be for us.

We have Conor.

BonzoGates · 28/02/2024 14:26

I babysat an Oran Odhrán) once. He used to toddle up to me and say 'Me's a man", God bless him.

BonzoGates · 28/02/2024 14:27

Oops see you passed over the Or sound earlier.

BonzoGates · 28/02/2024 14:28

And you have an Odhrán as well. Don't mind me OP.

For what it's worth I love Lorcan

I love Lorcan too! Great name, and I would never have said it was posh.

Also I'm loving Setanta as a PP suggested, I'm not brave enough to go with his alter ego Cú Chulainn.

I don't think there are 'posh' Irish-language names.
