Irish baby boy names

I am looking for a less common Irish boys name. I already have a Pádraig, well know but not very popular, 20/30 per year going by the CSO

In the family we already have Peadar, Fionn, Tadhg, Cathal, Cillian, Seán, Odhran.

If baby is a girl she'll be called Fionnuala.

Also we are Irish living in Ireland. I loved Ruairí the last time but I was worried he would be called Rory a lot.

Probably got lost in one of my replies

What do ye think of Fiachra?

OP posts:
Slanabhaile · 29/02/2024 18:43

I like Fiachra ❤️ 💙

Sloesandhaws · 29/02/2024 18:46

Like Fiachra.
Also Fiachna.

mathanxiety · 29/02/2024 20:53

Fiachra is a gorgeous name imo.

mathanxiety · 29/02/2024 20:55

There' a pretty well known modern trad singer from Connemara called Lasairfhíona.

Lozza70 · 29/02/2024 20:56

Lorcan, amazing name which we couldn’t use, too close to my name, but I adore it.

Derrymum123 · 29/02/2024 21:02

Fearghal/ Feargal.
Micheal/Michael
Séamus
Malachy/Malachi

And I think one of the Motherfoclóir guys has a daughter called Lasairfhíona.

@Mumoffionnuala if it's a girl we are sorted. 😊It's such a beautiful name I think. DH didn't want it if our 1st was a girl, I think he was just intimated by how to spell it. Spelling isn't his strong point in English, and both of us only did Irish to primary level so not good there either. But he's on board with it now.

I like Fiachra too DH isn't as sure.

@IamaRevenant I think Tadhg is taking a spike in England. I have family in the S.E. and 1 called their DS Tadhg thinking he'd be the only one. They've met 4 so far and 2 have no Irish connection just loved the name

@Sloesandhaws going by what I've seen on FB and by the CSO Tadgh is a pretty common misspelling. I had to 100x check on Pádraig because my Irish is nearly non existent

I remember making the announcement on Facebook and being corrected by almost my entire family on my spelling 😂 Even now I have to rhyme it out in my head, I’m dyslexic so no matter how hard I try sometimes I need a bit of extra time to remember how to spell it.

I also liked Fiach for a boy.

it was funny today I was talking to my Fionnuala about this thread and she said when she grows up she definitely wants a boy called Finn 😂

Do you mean that comment for me?
Yes, I know, I've heard of her.

CliffsofMohair · 29/02/2024 22:30

How is Laserfhiona pronounced? Presumably not Laser- Fiona?

StSwithinsDay · 29/02/2024 22:35

I have friends whose children go to a Gaelscoil. Some names that crop up.
Cuán
Somhairle
Fionn
Luan

Sloesandhaws · 29/02/2024 22:50

@CliffsofMohair Los-er-EE-(uh)-na

pontipinemum · 01/03/2024 10:24

@Mumoffionnuala I'm dyslexic as well, thank Christ for spelling when typing (I also google a lot of words that I can't figure out), can't help my sentence structure fully though! I must have checked and double checked I spelt DS's name correctly I even got DH to call his friend who lives in a Gaeltacht

But that is the correct spelling isn't it? Fionnuala?

It thankfully does not matter but I spelt my dogs name wrong. It was quite a while until that was pointed out to me. I really do no want to do that to my child!!

Lossir-ee-unna (schwas always hard to indicate without IPA).

It's a lovely name.

I'd forgotten Somhairle, @StSwithinsDay -- is it having a Gaelscoil vogue?

I seem to have encountered a lot of little Doireanns recently. I was assuming it was prompted by Doireann 'Ghost in the Throat' Ní Gnríofa, but I gather there's also a TV/radio presenter.

OwlDoll · 01/03/2024 10:45

I work in a school and these are few of the names we have there,
Dualta
Tuán
Cian
Cathal
Diarmuid
Naoise
Conall
Mánus
Pádraig
Connla

LizardOfOz · 01/03/2024 10:54

How is Somhairle pronounced?

Sow ear la?

(Sow like seeds?)

HemlockSoup · 01/03/2024 12:51

I'd pronounce Somhairle kind of like sore-l-yah

I know a Lasairfhíona but I always have to double check the spelling before writing her name. I'd find having an Irish name that's unusual even to most Irish people to be a bit of a pain. Just my opinion.

HemlockSoup · 01/03/2024 12:53

Only one pp has suggested it so far but I love Ferdia. Such a cool name and most people will be able to guess the pronunciation even if it's a new name to them.

It is a cool name but it sort of sounds Portuguese to me but I don't know why!

I won't be going for any of the very unusual old Irish names. I can't speak Irish so I don't think I could say them or spell them correctly ever!

OP posts:
MaraScottie · 01/03/2024 14:08

Ronan
Malachy

keffie12 · 01/03/2024 14:38

@pontipinemum My 3rd son is called Declan, and my 4th son is Christy. I have 2 older, but their first names are not so much Irish. Ex is Irish from the South

pontipinemum · 01/03/2024 14:56

@HemlockSoup I asked DH at lunch he doesn't like it. He does like Fiachra though so we might have 1 contender.

That was another one on my list for DS. I love it.
