Irish baby boy names

I am looking for a less common Irish boys name. I already have a Pádraig, well know but not very popular, 20/30 per year going by the CSO

In the family we already have Peadar, Fionn, Tadhg, Cathal, Cillian, Seán, Odhran.

If baby is a girl she'll be called Fionnuala.

Also we are Irish living in Ireland. I loved Ruairí the last time but I was worried he would be called Rory a lot.

We have a Cathal, Oisín, Rían and new baby Art.
We have a few more that we love and would love to use.
Noíse (though some people have started to use this as a girls name and spelled it Naoise!!)
Deaglán
Fionn
Absolutely adore Síofra and Méabh for a girl.

I've only ever known it spelled Naoise. I know a few middle aged men with that name and they all spell it that way.

Every Naoise I know is male, over 40, and spells it like that.

Have we mentioned Tiernan?

I think some one did, I like it. DH really dislikes some one with that name so its veto'd. 😂Funny how names have such strong associations I have some of my own and regardless of how much I might like a name I wouldnt be able to do it

@Mumoffionnuala I'm dyslexic as well, thank Christ for spelling when typing (I also google a lot of words that I can't figure out), can't help my sentence structure fully though! I must have checked and double checked I spelt DS's name correctly I even got DH to call his friend who lives in a Gaeltacht

But that is the correct spelling isn't it? Fionnuala?

It thankfully does not matter but I spelt my dogs name wrong. It was quite a while until that was pointed out to me. I really do no want to do that to my child!!

Yes - Fionnuala is right.

A gorgeous name imo.

Nóise would be the spelling I grew up with and only ever knew 2 who used the old spelling of it, like yourselves anyone else I know with the name spells it Naoise, be it male or female

How is Laserfhiona pronounced? Presumably not Laser- Fiona?

Spelt Lasairfhíona
I would say Lassareena.
Means "wine-flame".

Yes that’s the correct spelling. Luckily my dd picked it up easily when learning to spell her name. Just be prepared to correct people and have lots of interesting pronunciations of her name. We joke about it and she has lots of funny nicknames from the various pronunciations we get. The best was a letter from the health visitor who called her Fronalaua.

When I first told people her name I got a lot of negativity ( not that I cared) we lived overseas and people thought it was a made up name. Her middle name is Irish too. We briefly lived in Ireland a couple of years ago and got lots of lovely comments. I did find it amusing that we had to initially correct her Irish teacher when she started school on how to pronounce her name 😂 She loves being called Fionnuala or Nuala.

Sloesandhaws · 02/03/2024 15:15

How did her Irish teacher pronounce it @Mumoffionnuala? You'd think she'd get it right.

Mumoffionnuala · 02/03/2024 15:41

I can’t remember exactly, I just remember us laughing and Fionnuala correcting her. Apparently it’s an old lady name in Ireland and not been popular for a while.

That’s not true. Nuala is definitely an as yet unrevived old lady name, hence much Irish hilarity when some supermodel (Christy Turlington?) started a line of yoga clothing called Nuala (the equivalent of calling your funky brand ‘Gladys’), but Fionnuala is fairly classic . Its lovely. I know one in her eighties, several aged between 20 and 50, and a baby.

pontipinemum · 02/03/2024 15:53

@Mumoffionnuala it's def not a common one here anyway. But I think most people will know how to say it, if not spell it. There is a Fionnuala on iRadio and a few others in the media so not unheard of. I know a few Nuala's

I don't know any Fionnuala's IRL though

This sounds like year 9 sort of drama but I'm not sure how to approach the situation, advice would be appreciated.

A friend I've had since we were young children lives in the same city as me, but has turned bitter towards me. Multiple occasions have made me feel like she isn't happy for me when I succeed, and now she's accusing me of excluding her at every given chance. I won some pretty impressive awards in the last year and she didn't even congratulate me, I also got into a relationship and I feel her resenting that too even though I'm very careful about not spending all my time with him.

I invite her to practically everything, and the most recent thing I invited her she never bothered responding to my text. So I don't understand how I'm excluding her?

I'm fully willing to admit that we don't spend as much time together as we used to but I'm a lawyer now so my hours are obviously very demanding, she's also working full time so it's natural we're going to drift a bit? I still try and meet her any spare chance I get and when we do get together, it's actually ME who suggests it.

She sent me some really harsh texts that were practically all self pity and portraying me as the evil one in this situation. My sister told me I need to just move on and let it go but I feel like I have the right to stand my ground as it feels as though she's purposely trying to make me look bad.

How should I approach this?

Edited

I remember a Fionnuala on the radio when we lived there.

I think a lot depends where people live and social groups. Where we lived was very diverse with lots of immigrants, the school was an educate together school with many nationalities. Two of my DDs were in classes with very few children with Irish names, my youngest though was in nursery with children who all had Irish names, most of those children went on to the local Gaelscoil school, where I’m sure no one would have trouble spelling and pronouncing Fionnuala.

My Nan use to tell me stories and she would tell me about a Nuala who as always in trouble, it where I heard the name and fell in love with it. My Aunt also had a friend called Nuala.

Two different names there, with completely different pronunciations.

No-sheh
Nee-sheh

It isn't a case of old vs. new spellings.

I think Noíse is the older spelling, not Nóise.
Maybe pp put the fada on the wrong letter?

I prefer Naoise. Noíse can look like noise at first glance especially to those unfamiliar with the name.

@HemlockSoup I asked DH at lunch he doesn't like it. He does like Fiachra though so we might have 1 contender.

If you like Fiachra, what about Féilim, Fergal or Finbar?

Fada on the I makes more sense.

Fada on the O makes it a different name, same with no fada at all. Agree wrt 'noise'.

I'd spell it Naoise because official forms tend not to accept diacriticals and it's easier to distinguish it from 'noise'.

CliffsofMohair · 03/03/2024 10:25

We have a Féilim in the family. I'm not to gone on Fergal or Finbar. I don't mind going with a cousins name, in true Irish tradition between us we have probably 80, 1st cousins. So it very well could happen. I would like to avoid what will be babies 2nd cousins names, is that right?

So my/DH 1st cousins child. We have already called DS the same as one of DHs cousins kids. We live close by and they have the same surname and will in all likelihood go to the same school. I know that clearly shows we aren't very close and we're not since we didn't even know but I do want to avoid it. Ireland wide our surname isn't very common but it is very prominent in this little area.

Unfortunately that cousin has a Peadar and I love that name. But I think we would look like nut jobs to call our first DS the same name as their 1st DS, then call out 2nd DS the same name as their 2nd DS!!!

Probably best avoided all right.
