What do you think about the name Aubrey for a girl?

I like sound of Aubrey, but hate idea of using boys names on girls, but name in question is too soft for a boy to be named it.
Also same thing for other names that changed gender recently

That said, Aubrey has nice sound and nice look.

Onelife2024 · 16/02/2024 17:40

I like it! Nice two syllable name which sounds simple and pretty, but also strong. You will get people mishearing it as Audrey though, if that bothers you?

chocolateespresso · 16/02/2024 17:45

Ahhh I hadn't thought of Audrey hmm thanks I'll have to think about that.

I have an Aubrey, HE is 16. I also have an Elliott, He is 10 and today for the first time we met another Elliott who was female.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 16/02/2024 17:47

I would see Aubrey as a boys name. Audrey is a girls name, although I think it has quite a different vibe to Aubrey!

hottchocolate · 16/02/2024 17:52

I like it and I think it's not so unusual that people will not understand. I had Aubrey on my baby list for a girl and I know an Aubrey so I predict it will be popular over the next few years.

PoppingTomorrow · 16/02/2024 17:54

It's a boy's name.

chocolateespresso · 16/02/2024 17:54

@Phillipa12 yeah I've been hearing about female Elliotts and Jamies - totally new to me!

OP posts:
chocolateespresso · 16/02/2024 17:57

@PoppingTomorrow Why? Aubrey Plaza is not a boy.

I know a little girl called Aubrey. I think it's lovely. There was also the song 'Aubrey' by Bread. Beautiful song, about a woman.

Freysimo · 16/02/2024 18:00

I had a boss (male) called Aubrey but Bread did a beautiful song called Aubrey about a girl.

AmaryllisChorus · 16/02/2024 18:01

I like it. Makes me think of Aubrey Plaza too - definitely not a boy! It's a unisex name .

AuntieStella · 16/02/2024 18:02

I see it mainly as a boys name

I wouldn't use Audrey as long as there's still a Corrie character of that name (you may or may not watch, but she's been in since the early 1980s so is one of the very well known matriarchs)

BrightGreenGoose · 16/02/2024 18:02

It's a boys name to me. Wasn't Boycie in Only Fools and Horses called Aubrey? That's who I think of first.

Silverbirch7 · 16/02/2024 18:02

Lovely

Alloveragain3 · 16/02/2024 18:03

Mumsnet tends to see it as a boys name but it's unisex to me.

I think it's due it's day soon and is already being used in America quite a bit.

SuperGinger · 16/02/2024 18:05

Just makes me think of Aubrey Beardsley. Too many connotations of fat eunuchs for me

ChanelNo19EDT · 16/02/2024 18:06

Terrible for a boy but kind of ok for a girl. I guess cos it rhymes with Audrey. I knew one Aubrey who was male. It has gone to the other side.

CJ4713 · 16/02/2024 18:09

I don't like it at all. Never knew it was often a male name, but just don't like the sound of it. I read it as Audrey, and then my brain thinks 'hmm, no, not right.'

I am here….

FayCarew · 16/02/2024 18:16

Awful. Why give a girl an old man's name?

idontlikealdi · 16/02/2024 18:19

I like it, only know it as a girls name but I only know one!

SmashedPrawnsInAMilkyBasket · 16/02/2024 18:19

In the UK, it’s a man’s name from probably the first quarter of the twentieth century. And not a very nice sounding one.

Allican · 16/02/2024 18:33

You’ll get lots of responses here saying ‘It’s a boys name’. But times change and actually it’s much more popular for girls now

I do quite like it, it was on my list but didnt feel right. I also know one (girl) Aubrey aged 2.
