Opinion on name Atholl?

Kiwiburgh · 07/02/2024 21:12

What everyone's opinion here on the name Atholl? It's just been suggested to me as an option for baby boy due in a few weeks. We are both Scottish but live in Newzeland. Not sure if the name would be a bit odd especially if out with Scotland.

Thanks

love it.

FloofCloud · 07/02/2024 21:15

Sounds like someone with a lisp saying asshole too much for me!
What about
Menzies
Tay
Stirling
Munro
Blair

It’s so close to asshole I am assuming this is a joke thread.

It is, isn’t it?? Tell me it is OP

MrsMitford3 · 07/02/2024 21:17

It reminds me of that company-think travel insurance?

The advert says Atol protected. It's a no from me

😂 yes that’s exactly what it sounds like!

Awrite · 07/02/2024 21:21

I have known an Atholl for over 30 years. Not once had the asshole comparison come up. And we were teens in the 90's!

Mimami · 07/02/2024 21:23

Never heard of it but I have heard many unusual names in my time. Doesn't sound bad to me but I'd prefer Mungo.

Kiwiburgh · 07/02/2024 21:24

😂😂 it really wasn't, Atholl is an area in Scotland and I've never thought of it sounding like Asshole! Now I do!
Thanks for making this obvious to me, I imagine most New Zealanders will think the same since its an unusual name to them.
I think it's fair to say the name is out 🙈

My immediate thought is Blair Atholl in Perthshire. Not a bad association but it's not a name I'd choose.

sprigatito · 07/02/2024 21:25

Isn't it a place in Scotland? (I'm a folkie and there's a tune called Atholl Highlanders)

Whoopaday · 07/02/2024 21:25

Sorry, you’re going to have to tell us how it’s pronounced as I’m also another one who written down thinks it’s someone saying arsehole in a piss take way

MissRheingold · 07/02/2024 21:30

Just picture Jonathon Ross meeting your child.

It's a no.

I genuinely thought you were havin a laugh. You’ll be able to tell him you nearly called him that but were saved by mumsnet.

I do know it’s a place but it needs to stay that way.

MaloneMeadow · 07/02/2024 21:38

I agree with the PP - my first thought was asshole with a lisp! It’s a definite no OP

Acatdance · 07/02/2024 21:39

I really like it. The 'asshole' thing is a stretch.

Careerdecisions · 07/02/2024 21:46

I really like it and also know an Atholl (Scottish). It’s a great name and the one I know is a rather cool chap (musician.)

Dinosaurus86 · 07/02/2024 21:46

I prefer the spelling Athel (which I assume is essentially the same name)

Kiwiburgh · 07/02/2024 21:48

Haha I know right. I just can't unhear it now 😂 that's why we also went of Angus because lots of newzelandeds thought it souded/ looked like Anus!

Atholl Brose is a pudding or a cocktail, which is what I associate it with.

RenoDakota · 07/02/2024 21:49

I think it is lovely.
But then again, I have always had a crush on the 1960s version of Athol (one L) Guy, the double bass player in Australian band The Seekers. Older New Zealanders might make that connection.

Mum2jenny · 07/02/2024 21:49

Just no as my first thought was Atholl Brose. A Scottish dish.

ponia · 07/02/2024 21:50

There is a joke in the movie Made of Honor (terrible but a classic imo!) about how a Scottish mother in law wants to call her future grandson Atholl. The american daughter in law thinks shes saying asshole! I didn't realize until just now it was a real name! But if you like it why not go for it! 😊

Spagb0l · 07/02/2024 21:50

Atholl protected.

Newtoniannechanics · 07/02/2024 21:50

Sounds like something a travel agent would use.

ATOL protected.

Oh dear. I was going to say I don’t like it but it’s not atrocious, but now you’ve pointed that out I can’t unhear it 😂 I’m picturing the baby from ‘meet the fockers’ saying it 😂
