Opinion on name Atholl?

Kiwiburgh · 07/02/2024 21:12

What everyone's opinion here on the name Atholl? It's just been suggested to me as an option for baby boy due in a few weeks. We are both Scottish but live in Newzeland. Not sure if the name would be a bit odd especially if out with Scotland.

Thanks

As someone who is Scottish- love it and met several men called it.

mathanxiety · 08/02/2024 04:51

I think it would go down well in NZ.

Atholl Guy was bass player with the Seekers, Australian group from thr 60s/70s possibly a more common name down under than here.

Yes - that's why I think it would be perfectly fine in NZ.

Sorry I'm another that thought asshole with a lisp. Thought you were taking the mick!

Westwindworries · 08/02/2024 07:49

I was at school with an Atholl (Scottish). I don't recall any issues with it, but Ewen and Fraser are both better choices.

Absolutely not Menzies, just sounds like menses

It doesn’t if you pronounce it correctly!

weebarra · 08/02/2024 12:08

Technically in Scots Menzies should be pronounced Mingis, but I think that's pretty old fashioned.
My mum would always say John mingis for the shop for example.

Atholl!! Omg no. But I can see how you got there as it looks great written down, it’s just when you say it!!

I’d go for Fraser - it’s lovely. Ewan seems a bit wet in comparison, it’s just not half as characterful.

Sunnnybunny72 · 18/05/2024 11:49

I know two.
Very close family.
The younger goes by his middle name instead.

CurlewKate · 18/05/2024 11:53

As someone who couldn't say the "th" sound until I was a teenager I would never give a child a very unusual name with a th.

It’s so close to asshole I am assuming this is a joke thread.

It is, isn’t it?? Tell me it is OP

😂

Babadook76 · 18/05/2024 13:31

This thread was written in February and the op said she was due in just a few weeks. I assume the baby is born and named by now. I will say it reminds me of baby in the meet the focker films trying to say asshole

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/05/2024 13:39

Sounds like a cream you’d take for piles

Kiwiburgh · 21/05/2024 17:38

I almost forgot I even considered Atholl now 😂 I couldn't unhear asshole.
We now have a 12 week old called Ewan.

Just picture Jonathon Ross meeting your child.

It's a no.

That doesn’t make any sense. JR can’t pronounce his Rs, so Atholl wouldn’t pose him a problem.

Some other ideas for your list: Vathina, Cunthface, Wanther.

It's lovely!

LovelaceBiggWither · 22/05/2024 06:30

I'm a New Zealander and Atholl is not common. DH grew up in Dunedin and South Otago and he's never met one either.

MountCaramel · 22/05/2024 06:32

He'll get renamed at secondary school as asshole or anal at a push. Please don't inflict it on your child.

YearsofYears · 22/05/2024 06:37

I'm trying to laugh silently in bed at this thread.

Ewan is gorgeous. Congratulations :)
