Opinion on name Atholl?

What everyone's opinion here on the name Atholl? It's just been suggested to me as an option for baby boy due in a few weeks. We are both Scottish but live in Newzeland. Not sure if the name would be a bit odd especially if out with Scotland.

Thanks

I like it but am familiar with it because I'm Scottish. Now people have said the asshole thing it's hard to unsee!
How about:
Murdo
Struan
Alasdair
Harris
Lewis
Arran

wafflingworrier · 07/02/2024 21:51

It reminds me of what they say in adverts when something is atoll protected. I think it's insurance related?!

I agree with the PP - my first thought was asshole with a lisp! It’s a definite no OP

But it’s not pronounced Ath-hole, the emphasis is on the Ath part so it’s more Ath-el with a soft el.

weebarra · 07/02/2024 21:54

But unfortunately people won't know that!

Kiwiburgh · 07/02/2024 22:02

Yeah, our top 2 remain to be Ewan and Fraser. I was just curious about peoples thoughts on Atholl as it was a name I had never considered until it was suggested.
I'm so glad I asked now and its now a firm no 😂

Ewan and Fraser are lovely Scottish names.

MaggieFS · 07/02/2024 22:06

Fine as Blair Atholl.

Otherwise it's ATOL protected. Not good. However that might not resonate in NZ.

But I don't see the asshole link.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/02/2024 22:08

My mind thinks of Bikini Atoll, where the atomic bomb was tested.

HelloMist · 07/02/2024 22:10

Was about to write the same as @MrsMoastyToasty.

HillyHoney · 07/02/2024 22:10

I thought of the Muraroa Atoll, which I think is in the south Pacific somewhere - NZers might be inclined to hink of that.

I prefer the spelling Athel, definitely. Also like Athos but that's very Greek, I think!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 07/02/2024 22:11

Sorry I just hear asshole.

Iona40 · 07/02/2024 22:11

😂

FacingTheWall · 07/02/2024 22:15

Sounds like a firm of solicitors. Atholl and Co.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 07/02/2024 22:20

MrsMitford3 · 07/02/2024 21:17

It reminds me of that company-think travel insurance?

The advert says Atol protected. It's a no from me

*edited for spelling

Edited

Literally thinking that!

Stormbornform · 07/02/2024 22:21

It's the name of a street

WarningOfGails · 07/02/2024 22:23

Athol Fugard

Longdarkcloud · 07/02/2024 23:12

expat Kiwi here. I’ve only come across Atholl in NZ. Regarded as rather old fashioned in NZ but was quite popular once, especially in Otago and Southland which had a large number of Scottish settlers. I never liked it because it just didn’t sound very nice but it wouldn’t be regarded as strange in NZ

Maddy70 · 07/02/2024 23:23

Sorry i hate it. Sounda like a haemorrhoid cream

WandaWonder · 07/02/2024 23:25

Newtoniannechanics · 07/02/2024 21:50

Sounds like something a travel agent would use.

ATOL protected.

Or where they test nuclear bombs?, sadly that is probably not history considering where the world is heading

FloofCloud · 07/02/2024 21:15

Sounds like someone with a lisp saying asshole too much for me!
What about
Menzies
Tay
Stirling
Munro
Blair

Absolutely not Menzies, just sounds like menses

Iamnuts · 07/02/2024 23:37

Atholl Guy was bass player with the Seekers, Australian group from thr 60s/70s possibly a more common name down under than here.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 07/02/2024 23:39

Sorry but hideous name, even without the asshole thing.

Babla · 08/02/2024 00:25

Noooooo

user1477391263 · 08/02/2024 02:48

Asshole, I’m afraid. Also, isn’t an “athol” some sort of geographical name - a chain of islands or something?

user1477391263 · 08/02/2024 02:49

Just checked - I was thinking of “atoll.” Association still stands, however.
