Ellery --- too trendy sounding?

I'm US-based, but my husband is a "Mac." Drawing on Scottish names, I have always like the name "Ellery" for a girl.

I understand that in the UK, it's mainly for boys.... I also know that it will be pronounced more like "celery" over here. I'm ok with it.

But, to my horror, there has been a big surge in "cutesy" names like Everleigh, Waverly, Kinsley, Finley, etc.

Would Ellery fall into this "tackeigh" category?

I think so yes, sorry. Not sure it's going to age well either.

AtLeastHalfRelieved · 22/01/2024 21:09

I'd just assume you didn't know how to spell Eleri, which is a lovely Welsh name.

Dotchange · 22/01/2024 21:09

I like it!

Exactly my thoughts. It's a girls name

Joolsin · 22/01/2024 21:10

I would totally think celery.

Mum2jenny · 22/01/2024 21:11

Agree, I’d think Celery

PamelaParis · 22/01/2024 21:13

Ellery isn't a Scottish name. Confused I've lived here all my life, never met or heard of an Ellery.

MaloneMeadow · 22/01/2024 21:13

Yep, another vote for Celery. I know that you don’t mind but Ellery and her peers probably will! Not right to give a child that burden

Nineteendays · 22/01/2024 21:13

I would also think you for Eleri wrong

Same.

It sounds very made up American to me.

swedishgirl · 22/01/2024 21:16

Here in Wales, Eleri is quite a popular girls name. I think it's beautiful. Not seen the spelling Ellery before.

Nineteendays · 22/01/2024 21:17

Eleri isn’t pronounced to rhyme with celery though if you do choose eleri

SeaToSki · 22/01/2024 21:18

I would think about celery every time I heard it, or that you hadn't enunciated it clearly or something

Candleabra · 22/01/2024 21:18

Apart from Ellery Hanley the rugby player I can’t say I’ve ever heard the name before or since. I don’t think it’s a Scottish name.

Capsicumus · 22/01/2024 21:18

Sounds made up

bookworm60 · 22/01/2024 21:23

There was an American detective series in the ‘70’s, “Ellery Queen”, ( male) so I would assume that it is a boys name if I heard it

Pashazade · 22/01/2024 21:23

No crime fans here then! There was a very long standing crime magazine started at the beginning of the 20th century edited by Ellery Queen (actually two authors who used this as a pseudonym).
I really like it!

mnahmnah · 22/01/2024 21:25

I’m in England, but know Eleri as a Welsh girls name

SiobhanSharpe · 22/01/2024 21:26

It's a surname, originating in the Midlands, I think. It's not Scottish.
There are many beautiful Scottish names for girls. Have a google.

mathanxiety · 22/01/2024 21:27

I don't think it's too tackeigh. It's not as bad as Everleigh, Kinleigh, etc.

I remember ages ago there was a detective series on NBC called Ellery Queen, and iirc some books of the same name. The author was Ellery Queen too (a man).

Jessforless · 22/01/2024 21:28

I really like it!

MissingMoominMamma · 22/01/2024 21:28
