Ellery --- too trendy sounding?

I'm US-based, but my husband is a "Mac." Drawing on Scottish names, I have always like the name "Ellery" for a girl.

I understand that in the UK, it's mainly for boys.... I also know that it will be pronounced more like "celery" over here. I'm ok with it.

But, to my horror, there has been a big surge in "cutesy" names like Everleigh, Waverly, Kinsley, Finley, etc.

Would Ellery fall into this "tackeigh" category?

I would also think you'd spelt Eleri wrong.

Eleri is a lovely name btw.

Doublebiscuit77 · 22/01/2024 21:32

I haven't heard of Ellery as a Scottish name? I'd think more like Isla, Fiona, Eilidh, Kirsty, Iona, Mairi, Morag etc.

As per @Candleabra my first thought was the rugby player….but then I’m from Wigan .

copingstone · 22/01/2024 21:33

Elodie?

RaininSummer · 22/01/2024 21:33

I like it.

strawberryswizzler · 22/01/2024 21:34

never heard of it. sounds like a made up american name

Throwawayme · 22/01/2024 21:36

It's not a Scottish name.

alexwm · 22/01/2024 21:36

Not Scottish. Got it, guys. Should've said Celtic, as that's the name book I pulled from.

In the US, there's the Ellery Queen series from the 1930s - forward. Though that's a man.

Both my husband and I have unisex names, which we like. So this didn't seem so horrible to me.

I'm scottish and really struggle to pronounce Ellery like celery with my accent. It's the Ls and the R. I would pronounce it L-Ray

LolaCrapola · 22/01/2024 21:40

Eleri is pronounced El-airy

Seren is a lovely Welsh name - it means star ⭐️

Marcipex · 22/01/2024 21:42

I don’t dislike it, but I think she may end up as one of the many many Ellies.

A similar vibe is Mallory which I think is lovely.

CurlewKate · 22/01/2024 21:43

The only Ellery I've ever heard of is an American TV and novel detective from the 1940s (I think). He was a man.

Serena is the name I wanted to use, but my husband vetoed, so my daughter ended up being Eleri. 😁

828Pax · 22/01/2024 21:46

I have an Eleri (Welsh Husband)

Doublebiscuit77 · 22/01/2024 21:48

If you're after Celtic there are some lovely and varied names to choose from. Ellery doesn't seem Celtic to me either, sorry! But as per PP you could go for Eleri.

Or if it's more the unisex vibe you like then maybe Rowan, Wren or Morgan?

Oops, I meant Seren. I clearly didn't proofread

newwings · 22/01/2024 21:51

Have a friend called this. Ellery is too similar to celery. Her name is spelt Eleri and is pronounced Eleery.

Unmumsymofo · 22/01/2024 21:51

My youngest son is called Ellory and I love it. It’s very unusual here in England. I have heard of 1 Eleri (female) in real
life that’s it. But Ellory used to be a more common boys name, it’s old English meaning cheerful. We pronounce it to rhyme with celery. We do shorten it to El a lot in the house as well 😂 it’s probably not for everyone but I love it!

MyGooseisTotallyLoose · 22/01/2024 21:52

Also Scottish and not heard of this
What about Niamh, Mhari, Flora, Isla, Ailsa?
There's hunners!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 22/01/2024 21:55

I think of Ellery Queen too, a boy's name.

It’s not Celtic either. Look it up. It’s from
Old Norse.

Nobattery · 22/01/2024 22:25

Sounds either misspelled Celery or an old infectious disease that we now have vaccination to protect us from!

WilhelminaBunter · 22/01/2024 22:32

I reckon it's a mispronunciation of Eleri which someone has written down and is now calling "Celtic".

I'm Irish and it isn't an Irish name AFAIK. I don't even think we have the letter Y in Irish.

Onelife2024 · 22/01/2024 22:33

I quite like the sound of it - if you want something Scottish or Welsh with a similar feel, how about -

Aili
Eleri
Aila
Eilidh
Elspeth
Eluned

WilhelminaBunter · 22/01/2024 22:35

Eilidh is lovely and Scottish as suggested^^

Or there is also Ailis (pronounced ay-lish) which is irish and lovely imo

I really love Elspeth too but Eilidh is closer to Ellery
