Ellery --- too trendy sounding?

I'm US-based, but my husband is a "Mac." Drawing on Scottish names, I have always like the name "Ellery" for a girl.

I understand that in the UK, it's mainly for boys.... I also know that it will be pronounced more like "celery" over here. I'm ok with it.

But, to my horror, there has been a big surge in "cutesy" names like Everleigh, Waverly, Kinsley, Finley, etc.

Would Ellery fall into this "tackeigh" category?

Realised I didn't actually answer the question! I don't think it's too trendy. It's pretty rare, in the UK at least. I've never met an Ellery. It is similar to other popular names like Ellis for a boy, or Elodie, Eloise, Everly, Evelyn, Ellen, Eleanor, Ella, Ellie etc for a girl.

I don't think it has a Celtic vibe, more as you say a 1930s US film noir crime vibe. I don't dislike it, just depends what you are after.

I immediately thought of the clothing line, and before reading your post assumed that was the inspiration behind your choice! But I didn't grow up in UK so wasn't aware of similar names in Welsh etc.

Here in Wales, Eleri is quite a popular girls name. I think it's beautiful. Not seen the spelling Ellery before.

Eleri and Ellery are pronounced differently IMO.

Eleri = eLERee
Ellery = ELeree

GintyMcGinty · 22/01/2024 22:45

What about the Scottish name Marsali which is pronounced mar-sa-lee

LauderSyme · 22/01/2024 23:01

Some really pretty names suggested upthread.

I think Ellery would be an absolutely fine name for your daughter, but I do think it is quite on-trend and matches the vibe of multiple other modern names these days.

If you really like this sound or similar, there are definitely prettier ways to spell it. I think Ellory is nicer.

Though do avoid the tragedeigh of Ellereigh!

Daisybuttercup12345 · 22/01/2024 23:34

Too much like celery.

fatphalange · 23/01/2024 11:25

Leigh

Mallory

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 11:31

Eleri is popular in Wales and is pronounced El-ERR-y.
The pronunciation El-airy is not good.

Ellery looks and sounds like a surname.

PickledScrump · 23/01/2024 14:40

As others have said Eleri is the only one I can think or pronounce as el-EHR-ee with slight emphasis on the middle syllable. The ehr sound is somewhere between air and er. Hard to write it out. Often said el-airy to non Welsh speakers.

Ellery would likely end up being called celery by someone who thinks they are a comedian

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 14:49

@PickledScrump , it's El-ERR-y
I don't know where the El-airy come from unless it's a localised pronunciation where there's a strong regional accent (e.g. Aberteleri)

Eleri is usually said as 'Lerry to rhyme with Ceri/Kerry. I must know dozens of Eleris and a few Teleri and Meleri. None of them say it as -lairy.

A friend from Llanelli would say it the way you do, but she has a strong Llan-air-lli accent. We get her to say antibiotics. Grin

edited for typo.

PickledScrump · 23/01/2024 15:00

@DaNiYmaOHyd think you misread my comment? I never said the correct pronunciation was el-airy, I just pointed out English speakers often say it that way.

Im fully aware of how to say it, I wouldn’t say the middle as err, same as I wouldn’t say Ceri as c-ERR-y

CaraMiaMonCher · 23/01/2024 15:01

What about Mallory instead?

TranquilTurnip · 23/01/2024 15:03

"Eleri" is a Welsh name for girls, usually shortened to "Lel", but I've never heard of Ellery

NotFastButFurious · 23/01/2024 15:30

It's a great name but please don't call a child in America Eilidh, people in England struggle with the pronunciation let alone the Amercians! Do you want something Scottish?

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 15:37

@TranquilTurnip , I've only heard it shortened to Ler.

The intro says her name but the speaker doesn't say her Rs properly
horseymum · 23/01/2024 15:48

I'm Scottish, only heard of one Eleri who's of Welsh heritage, never Ellery ( male or female). It's not the worst.

I've never heard Ler! But it does make sense :)

Nineteendays · 22/01/2024 21:17

Eleri isn’t pronounced to rhyme with celery though if you do choose eleri

How do you pronounce it?

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 16:09

@jimbojambo Eh-LERR-y.

DiamondGazette · 23/01/2024 16:11

AtLeastHalfRelieved · 22/01/2024 21:09

I'd just assume you didn't know how to spell Eleri, which is a lovely Welsh name.

Me too. I have two Welsh friends named Eleri, it's a very pretty name

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 16:11

@PickledScrump , how do you say Ceri?

PickledScrump · 23/01/2024 16:36

@DaNiYmaOHyd the video you posted is exactly how I described the pronounciation of eleri 🤦‍♀️

err is the same sound as grr, not the same as in eleri. Err makes it sound like celery, which it is not

GreatGateauxsby · 23/01/2024 16:44

Ellery like…my name is Ellery I like celery?

It’s a No from me.

Sillybillymillyvanilly · 23/01/2024 17:00

My son’s middle name Ellery. It’s a great name.

FrancisSeaton · 23/01/2024 17:07

Sounds like a laundry brand
