Ellery --- too trendy sounding?

alexwm · 22/01/2024 21:05

I'm US-based, but my husband is a "Mac." Drawing on Scottish names, I have always like the name "Ellery" for a girl.

I understand that in the UK, it's mainly for boys.... I also know that it will be pronounced more like "celery" over here. I'm ok with it.

But, to my horror, there has been a big surge in "cutesy" names like Everleigh, Waverly, Kinsley, Finley, etc.

Would Ellery fall into this "tackeigh" category?

It’s a beautiful name when pronounced correctly. I know a Welsh Eleri. She gets called ‘Lairs’ for short.

I'd just assume you didn't know how to spell Eleri, which is a lovely Welsh name.

That's my dentist's name. She's fabulous so it's a great name 😁

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 17:59

@PickledScrump , err is the same sound as grr, not the same as in eleri. Err makes it sound like celery, which it is not
??? Confused

I don't mean err as in 'to err is human', I mean err as in Kerry, Cherry, Berry, Sherry, Ferry

Just how do you say Ceri?

PickledScrump · 23/01/2024 18:22

@DaNiYmaOHyd The same way everyone says Ceri 😂

When using err as a sound like you did it would be like grr.

Hobbies that have a social side are really beneficial, much better than seeking validation and superiority online. Best of luck

Grimmz · 23/01/2024 18:25

I know a little boy named Ellery! It's unusual for sure, but it suits him and he's gorgeous. London lad.

NotFastButFurious · 23/01/2024 18:26

@PickledScrump you may jest but I genuinely have no idea how you pronounce Ceri either! Is it like Kerry??

Alessya · 23/01/2024 18:26

Yes, sorry.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 18:37

@PickledScrump , I do not understand what you mean by When using err as a sound like you did it would be like grr.
I say Ceri as Kerry. There is no grr in Ceri or Kerry. I haven't mentioned grr before now.

Given that you have said that you don't say Ceri as Kerry, and that Eleri said as El-ERR-y rhymes with celery,
could you explain in simple terms how you, not 'everyone', say Ceri.

hellsBells246 · 23/01/2024 18:45

Finley/Finlay isn't a cutesy name; it's a popular traditional Scottish name!

I have never heard Ellery. I'm not keen.

PickledScrump · 23/01/2024 18:46

@NotFastButFurious yes Ceri is said like Kerry, just the Welsh spelling.

@DaNiYmaOHyd im guessing you have me confused with someone else now as I have not said Kerry and Ceri is said differently, and you have clearly misread my previous posts.

if you were to sound out celery it would be sel-err-y so you saying eleri as el-err-y would rhyme.

theduchessofspork · 23/01/2024 18:48

Yes I think so

As per @Candleabra my first thought was the rugby player….but then I’m from Wigan .

Me too! Grin

Waves hello 👋😃

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 19:15

@PickledScrumpif you were to sound out celery it would be sel-err-y so you saying eleri as el-err-y would rhyme.I'd write celery to sound like CELL-uh-ry, and Eleri Eh-LERR-Y. Ellery rhymes with celery, Eleri rhymes with Kerry

I might have got you mixed up with someone else. A pp has a husband called Eleri.

PickledScrump · 23/01/2024 19:28

@DaNiYmaOHyd as I said in my op I would sound it as el-ehr-ee, from what I’m assuming your “err” sound is meant to be the same as the “ehr” sound I mentioned.

So you tagged me in a post to try to correct me even though it’s exactly the same as yours just written differently.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 19:32

Possibly. Apologies if so.

I'd just assume you didn't know how to spell Eleri, which is a lovely Welsh name.

This

but Eleri (lovely name) is pronounced differently, with a stress on the second syllable

ReadtheReviews · 23/01/2024 19:37

I like it. I wouldn't say it's mainly used for boys in the UK. I would say it isn't used at all! I've never heard it and I'm quite into names! So fine as a girl's name.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/01/2024 19:37

Found it! The ehr sound is somewhere between air and er
Sorry @alexwm for the derailing

Had to search for Mr Hanley. His name is Cuthwyn, which would make one helluva Welsh name. Smile It's a bit cool.

Wooloohooloo · 23/01/2024 19:40

Mallory is lovely and less like celery!

Marie2023 · 23/01/2024 19:41

I know of a little girl called “Ellery Bloom”.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/01/2024 19:56

I assumed it was a boys name but that’s because of Ellery Hanley.

Luckypoppy · 23/01/2024 22:24

As per @Candleabra my first thought was the rugby player….but then I’m from Wigan .

My childhood dog was named after him as he was my hero. Met up with him a few years ago. Lovely guy.
