I thought I'd make another, follow-on, thread as the first filled up quickly and was so interesting

So, what’s the most unusual name you have ever come across in daily life?

Names I have only ever met one of include:

Vita
Venexia
Carmel
Wednesday

Nairn
Taj

An ex-boss had a very unusual name but feel too outing to post here as when you Google it's just them and we work in a small area. No one else seems to have that name at all. I think there's very few names that are as rare as that.

Carmel is quite common in middle-aged Irish women. It was popular there 50 or 60 years ago but is rarely used now. It's a Catholic name, a reference to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Tycho is Danish, cf Tycho Brahe the Danish astronomer. Very famous. Lovely name, I think.

Was he the one with the false nose?

I love this name too!

I heard of someone called Indigo once which I thought was unusual and very pretty.

What is the LaDasha myth all about?

It's an urban legend about a child normally in a school or medical setting whose name is called out as Leah. The mother then responds "the dash don't be silent!", because the family is always dogwhistled to be Black. It's racist and no child has ever been recorded to be named Le-a. It's always "my friend's aunt..." or "my sister's boyfriend...", never first hand information too. It's been parroted for almost two decades.

"The closing line of the anecdote ("the dash don't be silent") positions the person who bestowed the moniker as African-American through its phrasing in African American Vernacular English (AAVE). Such use of "don't be" in place of "isn't" is particular to AAVE."

Lilly-B. And she always went by Lilly-B, never just Lilly.

@Doughnuting Hawkeye was a character in 'The Last of the Mohicans'. The book was written in 1826. There's also a Marvel Hawkeye as well as the MASH one.

timoteigirl · 26/07/2024 21:04

Rawnie is unusual.

Vashti - family tree. Was convinced it was a typo/misinterpretation of handwriting initially but her name was indeed Vashti
Clever for a boy

When my girls danced at festivals we regularly met Ptolemy, Milan-Mia and Flame-Carmen (last two were siblings).

There was a baby in my postnatal group with dd1 called Unique.

Vashti is a rare but well recognised name, I think. It's in the Bible. And is also used in Iran, I think.

I've recently met a child called Marvel (girl). Her siblings have very common, traditional names so I don't know why she's been named so differently. She's in the middle age wise so it's not like she's way older or younger and the parents name tastes changed or anything. It suits her though.

KirstenBlest · 27/07/2024 19:22

@miniaturepixieonacid , I think @CamomileCream was saying it had been used for a boy

miniaturepixieonacid · 27/07/2024 19:31

@KirstenBlest Oh, maybe. I thought she was saying she'd also met a boy called Clever. So two separate contributions to the thread. But maybe Clever as a name is a bit unlikely!

KirstenBlest · 27/07/2024 19:33

Oh maybe you're right. I know aomeone with a brother called Genius in their language, but the name is not English.

EveryKneeShallBow · 27/07/2024 20:06

I was at school with a Sunshine “Sunny”, a Leandrah, and an Ydelle. Never met another of any of those.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 27/07/2024 20:10

I thought Kairo was odd but I've seen it a few times now
Near us we have Boaz and I also met a girl called Wyatt and a girl called Noah recently.
