At a soft play, a little girl called Coast.

I met a child called La-a. With that spelling. Pronounced Ladasha.

I kid you not - this was in a professional capacity and that was how her name was written on her records.

I still can't quite believe it!

Really? Because I was told this story as if it happened to a friend of a friend in 2011 and it wasn't true then.

Is This Child's Name for Real?

The tale of a mother who names her child 'Le-a,' which she insists be pronounced 'Ledasha.'

@Poppins2016

Was the little boy at soft play Asian, Middle Eastern or Black by any chance?

Khalil is a very common name in our (Islamic) culture...sounds like Kal-el in certain accents.

I have met many khalil’s with variations on the spelling… I once had a Kal-el named on a school play list and thought it was an unusual way to spell a traditional name but after realising he siblings called krypton and Clarke understood his parents were just avid super man fans 🤪

Bryn is Welsh.

loropianalover · 19/01/2024 14:09

I like Milan too! I work with engineers in Serbia etc. & a lot of young engineers (22-30) are called Milan.

LittleMissBeamer · 19/01/2024 14:09

Gift. It was an adult and I thought that they were joking so I did a little awkward laugh😳

WinterSalad · 19/01/2024 14:10

I worked with a South African man who’s middle name was Rudolph and he used it for his son, apparently it was a family name. I suppose it meets the mumsnet unusual name requirements of known but not popular nor dated, and easy to spell and pronounce.

At a soft play, a little girl called Coast.

I know a little girl Cove which is on a similar wavelength. Unusual but suits her.

my kid goes to school with a Neveah

I thought it was a urban myth...

When I was 17 in my first job, I got a new manager and I will never forget him saying he would name his child this and then explained how it's "heaven backwards" with a tone and expression which suggested what he was telling me would absolutely blow my mind. Bless him 😅

I think on one of the Teen Mom or 16 & Pregnant shows, one of the babies is called Neveah, so I'm not surprised it has picked up.

To be fair, I think it's a perfectly pretty sounding name, it's just the "Heaven speltt backwards" thing I can't get over!

I once had a neighbour called Loveday

That is a very old name, I like it. Also love Perseverance. All the African virtue names are so nice.

Ladybird

I know a kid with the middle names Neon and Ladybird! They were even on tv as her parents talked about their IVF journey

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 19/01/2024 14:12

Yeah @EffieGraysDisappointingWeddingNight but I've only ever heard it pronounced 'nev-at-uh' which means it's pronounced differently to how the spelling suggests it should be. It's a ludicrous amount of shoehorning for a completely shit name.

DuesToTheDirt · 19/01/2024 14:12

Not a child, and some years ago - "Hamish McSporran". Can't get much more Scottish than that!

I also completely love the name Loveday, it's definitely not a new modern name and I wanted to name my DD it, but DP vetoed it. I still wistfully dream of having a Loveday one day.

Someone I knew gave her daughter the middle name Comfort as she said that's what she was to her-her comfort.

CakedUpHigh · 19/01/2024 14:14

Siblings Tia Maria and Jack Daniel. Tequila.

Oh yea Pekka is a very common Finnish name. :)

I can't think of any super wild ones but I know a Loxley Fox (+surname) and a couple of Blazes. When DC was little there was a little baby boy in our NCT group and his name was Bryn. It's just a name but for some reason it always felt really random to me.

Loxley Fox's parents must have been big fans of the Disney cartoon version of Robin Hood.

Last year on holiday I met a Blousey. Pronounced 'blouse' (like the clothing garment) 'y'.

This is a character from that kids movie where they got each other with the custard splurge guns…….buggy Malone!!

I think Nevaeh is pretty.

But I always assume it is Niamh which is pronounced 'Neev' I believe. I love Irish names like that. There was an Aoife in DS2s baby rhyme time class years back which I loved as well.

Jetstream · 19/01/2024 14:14

Jet and Venetia, children I taught in riding classes, Suffolk.

FanFckingTastic · 19/01/2024 14:15

As as kid (so back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) we knew a lad called Bonzo. Not sure what his parents were thinking as the other siblings had fairly standard names.

@ruralwanderer Ignatius is an old Irish name. It's great. I went out with a guy called Ignatius when I was a teenager

He is also a major saint, one of the fathers of the collated Old Testament, who was martyred by being thrown to the lions in the Colosseum.

The founder of the Jesuits was called Ignatius, too.

Bryn is Welsh.

And means "hill". For example, Bryn Terfel, famous classical singer. It is a pretty standard sort of Welsh name.

Sorry, apologies if I have offended anyone with this, I didn't know it was an urban myth, but I've just looked it up online and you're right.

But this is actually true and it was a white child.

Then why did you claim it was someone you'd met?
