Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

'fraid Romy just makes me think of Boris & Carrie's daughter and nothing' s worse than that.

I used to love the name Romy and was gutted when they picked it for their daughter. And I'm afraid I don't like any of the others on your list OP!

Oh! I LOVE Maude, oh wow. It sounds beautiful.

No it really doesn't. I always think of Maude as a scullery maid.
Your whole list is hideous I'm afraid, I think you need to go back to the drawing board.

Googling Lisandry now and it seems more common in Spain/Argentina. It's growing on me a bit!

It sounds like mouthwash. It isn't as if it is a common name here, so its being common in Spain is by the by. That said, the other names sound pretty chavvy except for Romy and Helen.

MarthaMayWho · 12/12/2023 22:49

The other thing is your child is likely to be like you or your wife, so don't pick a name that's too cool or doesn't fit with you. We changed our firstborns list for this reason. Our number one was too cool and we are both too geeky to pull it off. (Yes I am aware you are a same sex couple but still can apply)

It's a baby girl. Hence the eigh in Bradley. I personally do not like boys' name for girls.

If my wife had her way, she'd name our baby Carter or Parker.

What about something unisex or something that is a girls name but not overly feminine like:

Harper
Amber
Piper
Hazel
Blair
Quinn
Audrey
Fern
Avery
Rowan
Ashley
Robyn

Frankie Bridge’s children are called Parker and Carter. They’re both boys.

Close to your list I like Helene and Romilly.

Maybe time to stop googling then! it’s way too much like an unfortunate melange of misandry, laundry and dysentery. I know it’s the name of one of the relatives but they have to be fair to the child. If they go with this they should definitely shorten to Lisa for school.

'An unfortunate melange of misandry, laundry, and dysentry' - this had me in fits of giggles. It's true though I'm afraid.

QueenOfThorns · 12/12/2023 22:50

Dallas is the heroine of a Jackie Collins novel if I remember correctly.

My DD is at school with a female Parker, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. And anyone who would name a child (of either sex) Carter is clearly not old enough to remember Sheriff Fatman Grin

Highlyflavouredgravy · 12/12/2023 22:50

Every single name you have mentioned barr Helen is atrocious

BlackeyedSusan · 12/12/2023 22:51

each write a list. favourite at the top and keep going for twenty or thirty names each to see if you can come up with something that you both like enough.

look at each others options and see if you can finda slightly different version of the name that you both agree on. (eg cathryn/catherine/katherine/kate/caterina/cathy caroline/carolyn)

Nevertouchakoala · 12/12/2023 22:52

Both list are awful. Look on nameberry you put in names you like and they give similar names. Maybe there might be a compromise to be had?

Agree but Helen is deathly dull. Very bland name.

CheshireCat1 · 12/12/2023 22:53

I notice that a couple of the names are from Troy, so how about these:
Alexandra
Penelope
Rhea
Iris

Calliopespa · 12/12/2023 22:54

Sorry OP we are all being massively rude. But we have to speak for your LO as some of these are real tease fests. Go with Helen or Emma if you both like them, Lisa if DP insists on honouring the relative. Personally I think Helen and Emma are updated and improved by moving to Helena or Emily.

MarthaMayWho · 12/12/2023 22:54

Brienne always from Troy.
Don't let your wife shorten to Brian though 😂

How about Troy! 🤣NO OP: that was a joke! 🤪

Is your partner literate? Seriously,

Doesn't she mean Lysander? (Character in a play.)

He was a Spartan general who defeated the Athenians in the battle that ended the Peloponnesian war!

Shewhobecamethesun · 12/12/2023 22:56

How do you pronounce Dahlia? I can never work out if it's Day-lee-a or Daar-lee-a.

I think Emma and Helen(a) are lovely

forgotmyusername1 · 12/12/2023 22:57

Romilly?

Means God's beloved one so is an actual name and incorporates some of the sounds you were going for

WimbyAce · 12/12/2023 22:57

I actually really liked Bronte for a name but then thought there would be confusion if it was Bront-ee or Bront-ay.

Diaria · 12/12/2023 22:57

Diaria · 12/12/2023 22:38

These are massively better.

So making a new list you could have

Bradley
Christina (Chris/Chrissie/Tina/Ina for short)
Emma
Helen/Helena (Lena for short)
Lorena
Romy

Sorry missed these
Lola , Carla, Fiona , Flora, Sophia, Gabrielle.

Lola - makes me think of eastenders and the song Coca Cola L-O-L-A Lola…

Carla and Fiona - very 80s, and also shrek.

Flora - butter

Gabrielle - dreams can come true

New List

Bradley
Christina (Ina)
Emma
Gabriella
Helena (Lena)
Lorena
Romy
Sophia

Everything ending in ‘a’ is lovely

SleepingStandingUp · 12/12/2023 22:58

Half of hers are boys names - Bradl(ey), Paris, Lisandry autocorrects to misandry and reminds me disantry.

Dalia is lovely. That's it.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 12/12/2023 22:58

ExcitingRicotta · 12/12/2023 21:30

Romy and Dahlia are lovely.

All hers are awful. Bradley isn't even spelt like that?

Dont like Neva either, assume you are saying it Nee-vah but it looks like never.

They're both terrible. Helen is the only passable one.

Calliopespa · 12/12/2023 22:59

MarthaMayWho · 12/12/2023 22:54

Brienne always from Troy.

There’s also Brianna. I’m never certain about mens names with “Anna “ or “ette” on the end. It’s a bit “ Wally-Anna.” Though I do think Harriet ( or Harriette) is cute .

WimbyAce · 12/12/2023 23:00

At the end of the day though choose what you both like, don't listen to anyone else. My advice is keep it under wraps until baby is here and you are definite and then you don't get family chipping in opinions. We didn't tell a soul until both names were set in stone.
