Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Well the good news is you have months still to find a name and you both have eclectic tastes.

Have you considered Ellen, Lysette, Toni (Antoinette), Deĺla, Emily? Or carry on with your lists (no comments just crossed out or left if a possibility)

Nanny0gg · 12/12/2023 22:35

Helen is due a come-back so you could start a trend!

Maybe Lisa should be the name then? Homage to that family member and it's classic

Good call. It’s quite cute and won’t raise eyebrows. It’s short for Elisabeth if you wanted a “passport “ name that was longer like Lisandry.

Chouette77 · 12/12/2023 22:35

Or Lisbeth or Lisette

VanityDiesHard · 12/12/2023 22:21

The only name I can think of is Lisander, which is a boy's name. I think she must have misheard some name. Lisnandry does sound like a disease. It rhymes with dysentery.

Makes me think of misandry

PyongyangKipperbang · 12/12/2023 22:37

Mixing up both of your choices.....what about

Emma Leigh Surname Surname

Then baby has the choice between using her first or middle name when she is older. Two of my six have decided to go by their middle names. One is girl who doesnt like her chosen first name but likes one of her middles names (similar to the "Charlie" mentioned above) and the other is in the film industry and needed to change her name as there was another well known person in her field, in her particular tech area, with the same name, so went with a middle name instead.

So Emma (or em then M as I ended up being my whole life!) if she wants to or Leigh if she wants a more gender non specific name.

Momof2soonmomto3 · 12/12/2023 22:37

Nope! Dont like any of them, very odd names and i like unique and different and if i could of got away with it my babies would of had different names at birth but once the more "normal" names grew on me they are my kids names and suit them, we went by meaning in the end 🤣 and helen sounds like the 60 year old lady down the road please dont lol

Lachimolala · 12/12/2023 22:38

Out of all the names you’ve written. Helen, Emma and Sophia are the best.

Previously to this, the only ones we both agreed on was Emma, Cristina and Lorena.

These are massively better.

So making a new list you could have

Bradley
Christina (Chris/Chrissie/Tina/Ina for short)
Emma
Helen/Helena (Lena for short)
Lorena
Romy

Calmdown14 · 12/12/2023 22:39

If you still can't agree your other option is to consider names which lend themselves well to nicknames.

Your wife seems to favour more sharp sounding masculine names. Your choices are softer and more feminine.

So you could have a Felicity shortened to Flick, or a Jasmine shortened to Jas (just random examples others can probably come up with better).

Personally I think it's quite nice when there are variations that let a child have a bit of choice as they get bigger.

eandz13 · 12/12/2023 22:40

Bradley (spelled that way) is lovely for a girl. I really like it! I think the spelling BradLeigh looks a bit rough though, I'm really sorry!

What about Bryony? Bradley just reminded me of the name Bryony which I think is nice too.

Helen and Dahlia are also lovely.

Googling Lisandry now and it seems more common in Spain/Argentina. It's growing on me a bit!

Maybe time to stop googling then! it’s way too much like an unfortunate melange of misandry, laundry and dysentery.

determinedtomakethiswork · 12/12/2023 22:41

Wtf is Bradleigh?

Catsfrontbum · 12/12/2023 22:42

Maude
Sophia
Calliope
Celeste
Astrid
Magda

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 12/12/2023 22:43

Lisandry is hilarious sounds like misandry ...

RoseMarigoldViolet · 12/12/2023 22:44

I like Dahlia. Such beautiful flowers but not so often used as Rose, Poppy, Lily etc. Cool name for a girl.

Bananabreadandstrawberries · 12/12/2023 22:44

I like Lorena from your old list!

Do these names suit you? Your wife’s list suggests a particular demographic.

Demainsdeslaube · 12/12/2023 22:44

Oh! I LOVE Maude, oh wow. It sounds beautiful.

On the whole naming after a relative thing.
I would advise against. Your child will be their own person. They don't need to start life in someone's shadow.
And Lisandry is not the kind of name I'd be jumping to repeat.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 12/12/2023 22:45

The only one I like is Helen

toomanyleggings · 12/12/2023 22:46

None. Honestly you just have to keep going through names until you find something you both like. We tried for months. I think I was 8 months pregnant and I said to dh ‘what about ‘name’?’ thinking he’d veto it but he didn’t. Then we had a name.

90yomakeuproom · 12/12/2023 22:46

All terrible

OhwhyOY · 12/12/2023 22:47

I'm sorry OP but I personally don't like any of the names there. My advice though is that whatever you go with will likely end up feeling like their name. My DP and I didn't name our son until he was 10 weeks old as we couldn't decide/agree - my DP liked a few names I found really stuffy, he didn't like the ones I liked. It was tough. In the end we settled for one neither of us was quite sure about- but it fits him now. And I really don't care what other people think now (though we did think about it being a name that could work for him as an adult etc).

If you like traditional names you could try looking at old name lists (medieval French, Old Norse, Anglo Saxon etc) to see if any of them suit you, quite a few of them are quite androgynous so might suit your wife's tastes too.
