Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Or the opera or Manon Des Sources.

Isn't the opera also Manon Lescaut?

Avoidingsleep · 15/12/2023 19:13

All of your wife’s suggestions sound very trashy to me (apart from Helen).

I'm not the biggest fan of your names either though (no where near as bad as your wife’s though, check out the Reddit sub tradgedeigh, I’m sure many feature on there). Unfortunately, Dahlia just reminds me of the unsolved murder (The Black Dahlia), Delilah is similar and quite nice to say.

leesylou · 15/12/2023 19:24

Just keep going until you find one you both like. Me and my partner had the same problem with our second DD. He liked names like Jennifer, Emma, Jane and I liked names like Francesca, Erica and Georgina. We both agreed on Emily 😊 Our first DD was always going to be Sophie as we both loved the name. These days, if I was going for number 3, it would be Aida or Edie (pronounced ey-de). Good luck to you and your wife, I’m sure you’ll both come to an agreement on a lovely name.

Kgiggl3s · 15/12/2023 16:48

Right!? So vulgar and ignorant. The name is Edie

christ 😂 never thought I'd be called ignorant and vulgar for suggesting this was a nice name. I'm not even that taken by it - I just thought it may be helpful as a name close to bradleigh. The responses to this have made me howl with laughter. 😅

100% to each their own though and I totally get not everyone will approve. . Ignorant may be a little OTT though my friend is a lovely caring mum and the name suits her daughter perfectly

If the name 'suits her perfectly' then I never want to meet her. A more ghastly, dire, chavvy name I have never heard.

What a horribly unpleasant specimen you are.

Pointless. Also potentially confusing- is it supposed to sound the same as "Ashley" or is the "Leigh" bit supposed to be the same as "Lee" so Ashlee?

It’s probably just me but I really don’t like names ending in eigh as it makes me think of a horse: “neigh” I guess. And maybe “ one horse open sleigh.”
I have nothing in particular against horses though.

Snugglemonkey · 15/12/2023 20:32

Go with Emma. Spelt right, not trashy, you both like it. Pick Emma!

trainboundfornowhere · 15/12/2023 20:32

I like Helen and Neva. I actually have a girl called Neva in a youth group I run at the moment. I also like Lorena and Cristina. I find Emma deadly dull because I have met so many of them over recent years. That is a personal issue though as nobody would bat an eye at the name.

I love the name Emma. It is my middle name and was very nearly my first name: my father wanted it for my first name and actually went around telling people that was what it was, but my mother wasn't so keen so they went with my actual first name instead. I sometimes wish that my father had won.

Lavenderblue11 · 15/12/2023 21:32

I think Helen is old fashioned, sorry to all the Helens out there. All the other names aren't great either, just my opinion.

Palewildflower · 15/12/2023 21:33

Sorry to say that your original name suggestions were not great… However! Your updated names were much better! Maude is really pretty. So is Maeve (can also go wild with the spelling lol) could also go Maeva. You could go with a theme for the names, like one having a French name and then when you have your next baby they could have a British name. Might make it easier to pick a name if you have a theme ? My French suggestion would be Fabienne, I think it’s just beautiful!

Is this Edie being called chavvy? I think it’s anything but: almost too Lady Edith ( it’s usually short for Edith which was fairly crusty in the 1920s. ) Its slightly old lady ish but not chavvy.

No, not at all. Edie is upper class. Edeigh, on the other hand, is highly chavvy.

Snowbear32 · 15/12/2023 22:39

Lisandry sounds like you're trying to write Lindsay and fucked it up.

Helen is OK but too old fashioned.

Neva reminds me of nevi which is the Latin plural for moles (as in the moles you have on your skin).

The rest are just awful too, sorry.

Well I’m afraid I don’t like any eigh ending names when written - for the reasons posted earlier. But in fairness it sounds the same.

This trend of choosing a modern cool name has shown to negatively impact people. It comes across as uneducated and tacky.

A name is not an artistic expression of you, it is something you are subjecting another human being to carry as a representation of themself, which will affect how people view their resumes, job applications, introductions, etc. So it is best to stick to traditional, classy, elegant, timeless, simple…. if you want unique it is great to choose something from your cultural ancestry or heritage. But you have to obviously consider how it sounds to the English ear.
Lisandry sounds like lizard (a prostitutes for truckers), misandry, laundry, larceny
i agree Dallas and Paris are cheap names, like a stripper or porn star
Dahlia was a serial murderer
I don’t like any of the names to be honest
how about Amelia? The first woman aviator
Abigail (quite a few strong historical Abigail’s)
Penelope
Delaney
Delphine
Natalia
Nadia
Nalia
Delilah
Nadine

I like most of your names, especially Amelia and Abigail! Delaney sounds like a surname or male name; and I'm afraid Nadine makes me think of Nadine Dorries.

What on EARTH is wrong with Edie as a name? A bit old-fashioned, I'll grant you, but 'dire'?

Can't anyone read properly!? It is the name EdEIGH that is dire! NOT 'Edie'. I really made that extremely clear. People on this site are so keen to be outraged that they lose all ability to understand the most basic points.

WordOfTheDay · 15/12/2023 22:58

OP, I’m sure you would do it anyway, but do read about the background to the name before you choose.

No one has been outraged: we were just curious and seeking clarification.

There is nothing wrong with have many names (I have 4 and use just the first 4 letters of my first) , so as long as you agree what you are going to call them at home (there are poor children of both genders named after an entire football team)

Then just have one that:

  • cannot be shortened to something horrible,
  • watch the initials don't make up something you would rather not,
  • nothing combined with their surname that also sounds odd or bad (think of poor Emma Hoare).
  • For paperwork purposes, it is kind to those of use who have to handle differences not to share initials (I met James and John, twin sons of Joseph whose records had been royally mixed up)
  • ditto not John or Ann on their own
  • try for something that the poor child is not going to spend the rest of their life having to spell

Just remember that when the child starts school they are going to have to write their own name. When my Scott started school they would not get reading books with words until they could. Now his is a series of semi circles, circles and straight lines (he was going to be Ceri until my neighbour pinched it), and Elizabeth, however struggled for ages until I told her mum that as she called her Libby at home that perhaps she should at school - job done.
How about simply your grand/mother's name followed by hers, or if you are going for a naming ceremony of any sort, then name the child after the sponsor(s)
or I might suggest Saoirse (pronounced Sersha), or Siobbhan (pronounced Shivawn)😄
Good luck, it will come to you

llizzie · 16/12/2023 03:28

It is not easy to choose a name. Someone said a long name can be shortened, and so it can, but a long name on a birth certificate entitles you to use that name when you are grown, and not suffer the short versions people give you.

My name is Elizabeth. I went through my childhood being called Betty, which I hated. As soon as I left school I called myself Elizabeth, and I felt a new person, with more courage. Only my immediate family calls me that, and they know I don't like it, but my courage showed me I can pass it by and not bother. Now it is Lizzie and it suits my years, and is easy on the ears. It has a sort of softness that Betty never had.

sjfev · 16/12/2023 06:17

You just keep adding makes till you find one that you BOTH like.
With names for my boy, we would put them to each other and if the other person said they didn't like it, it was off the list, as simple as that.
Also, please remember you are naming a human... They will have that name as a baby, a child, a teen and an old person... Is it suitable?
We didn't find the name until about 3 weeks before we had him.
You don't have to choose one of those and have the other not be happy with the name choice, keep looking 🤷🏼‍♀️
But the name choices are indeed absolutely tragic.

Aren’t both Ashley and Ashleigh pronounced as Ashlee? I would say them both the same.
when I was growing up Ashley tended to be for boys (very popular at my school) and Ashleigh for girls although a female Ashley wasn’t unheard of
