Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Edeigh doesn't look like it's pronounced Edie, it looks like a jumble of letters and I think Id read it as Ed-day.
Ashleigh looks like a bad spelling of Ashley. If you/your friend prefer that spelling, then fair enough. I think of Ashley as female if scottish, male otherwise.

Kayleigh is from the Marillion song, I think, so that spelling was more familiar. Hayley was first used for Hayley Mills so that's the usual spelling for any on my age group.

If you/your friend prefer that spelling, then fair enough.

I’ll just go back in time 50 years and tell my Mum.

I’ve never met a male or female Ashley in Scotland. Not sure where you got that idea from.

I've lived in Scotland all my life- the place is heaving with "Ashleys" - mainly female.

Well that's a bit of an exaggeration but it's not an unusual first name.

Cool, I’ll take “less bad for some reason” over branding my parents “vulgar and ignorant”.

Incidentally I had no idea it was a boy’s name in its other form till I was about 12. It was not common for boys in my part of the UK.

Edited

My aunt was married to a man named Ashley so for me it was the other way around, I had never heard of it as a girl's name.

I suppose, examining this a bit more, the reason Ashleigh doesn't make me cringe in the way that Bradleigh and Edeigh do is probably because in my head it's come to be a feminine version of Ashley.

Thinking about it, in my head I still think of Ashley as a man's name but if I saw the "leigh" spelling I would assume the person was a woman, probably because it reminds me of Kayleigh.

I realise there's not much actual logic here. But I think that's why I don't put it in the Bradleigh/Edeigh category.

If you can time travel, I'd tell somebody famous or influential.

I know a few Ashleys, some scottish, some not. The scottish ones happen to be female, the others male.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 15/12/2023 12:07

For me Ashley is a boy's name (Ashley Wilkes) or a surname (Laura Ashley)

Re there being none in Scotland, the Law Society of Scotland has 24 Ashleys and 13 Ashleighs as enrolled solicitors. That might not seem much but taking really popular names, there are 139 Emmas, 98 Kirstys and 176 Fionas so 37 Ashleys / Ashleighs is a good showing.

You might have expected lots of Morags but there are only 18 of them.

MerryChristmasToYou · 15/12/2023 12:17

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle , Ashley Jensen - Wikipedia
Mary-Kate and Ashley, Ashley Roberts (Pussycat Dolls)...
I'd say it was a surname and place name that was used as a boy's name then unisex/girl's name.

Someone upthread said no one wouldn't say Neva as Nev-a, but Nevin is Nev-in

The last Ashley I met was actually a female partner in an American law firm.

What’s your opinion of Ashleigh?

(Asking for a friend)

Ashleigh or Ashley is fine and is a normal variant of that girls name.

Bradley is typically a boys name, but is becoming more popular for girls.
Bradleigh is not a common spelling for it and looks a bit chavvy.

Probably the case that Ashley is a bit posher too, but it’s also the spelling used for boys so I would ever towards Ashleigh.

It’s better not to saddle kids with made up spellings imo, it looks slightly illiterate, quite apart from the offence it causes the Irish to anglicise names.

^ agree, don’t do this.

Calliopespa · 15/12/2023 12:38

pollymere · 15/12/2023 10:21

Melanie (with the accent so Mel-annie), Chloe, Amelie, Sophia, Marie, Katy.

Or Genevieve and call it Gennie...

Melanie is my pick given OP said her wife will be pushing out the melon(y) 🍈 🍉🤪

Amelie is pretty.

To be fair there is Ashley Jensen, who is my age and Scottish. Growing up there I never met another one though. I did move away in 1992 though, perhaps it’s become more popular since my day.

Paris is a literary name. And Dahlia is a flower name from long before the black Dahlia ( which btw was a nickname for the victim not the killer) and it’s pronounced differently. Object to the name is you like, but at least have the correct information.

Edited

Well quite - and dahlias are named after Anders Dahl, a Swedish botanist from about two centuries ago.

OP, I know your preferences have moved on, but if you're a Swedish Johanna it's quite a nice choice! Do be aware it can be pronounced both dah-lia and day-lia.

Glad you liked my suggestion of Clementina though ;)

Isabellivi · 15/12/2023 01:59

i know this but to peoples ear they will think of Paris Hilton and the Black Dahlia. It’s like naming a child Adolf because of its original meaning and ignoring the famous person sharing that name. Nothing wrong with the name Adolf….

Other people might have heard of the classical male Paris too, you know. And TBH I think the Black Dahlia is quite a tenuous connection; although I know the novel, I didn't immediately think of it. Plus as someone else said, it's not the name of a serial killer but a nickname for a victim.
Also, I call Godwin's Law regarding your point about Adolf Grin

Grammarnut · 15/12/2023 13:55

Nothing wrong with Maeve, an ancient Irish name - she is the Queen in the Lay of the Dun Cow, I think. And it's a lovely name. I'd be careful with Maude and Matilda (forms of the same name) though old-fashioned names are coming back. Ada is pretty.

Matilda is hardly coming back - its super popular ditto other old lady names - Olivia, Lily, Ivy, Flora, Millie, Elsie.

systemadilema · 15/12/2023 14:50

Romy is beautiful. Don't like the others I'm afraid.

Justintimeee · 15/12/2023 15:38

American sounding, chavvy names imo. Pick something classier

Simpleblessingsxx · 15/12/2023 16:16

T1Dmama · 15/12/2023 08:52

Please be careful with names like Maude and maive… they really are very old fashioned and the child will likely hate it… clementine sounds like an orange .

Elisa is pretty, you could also go Eloise?!
Helena is pretty and love that it has a link to your wives heritage.
Would Lyndsey be close enough to her family members name to honour her?
Emma is ok too,

I think of choosing an ‘out there’ name you should choose a standard middle name, if your DD hates her name it’s very easy to change the name to the middle name without needing to do so legally.

When I was pregnant I loved the name Snead (hate it now and glad I never chose it!) I also loved Nadine… till my SIL pointed out that it might be shortened to Nads…. I didn’t fancy standing at sporting events shouting ‘GO nads!’ 😂

My exH hated all my choices and we only had a boy name up until our 30 week scan when we were told the sex!

We sat with a book and literally read out any I liked.. we avoided A as our last name begins with A and we didn’t want AA for obvious reasons.

Names my friends chose that were unusual but still nice included

Elise, Aaliyah, Faye, Matilda but shortened from birth to Tilly.. Madeline (Maddie)

There we’re a few Lily’s, Roses and Daisy’s at school,

it’s such a hard discussion…. I even know 2 people from school who had their baby and after 3 months changed either the spelling or the name entirely!! I didn’t even realise you could do that, but apparently you can in the first year. One called her DD. Meghan and changed it to Madeline. The other simply changed Ayla to Isla (apparently pronounced the same).

But as said be unselfish, this is a name your child will be ‘wearing’ for the rest of their life unless they change it at 18…. So think about the potential for bullying, any weird words the initials spell etc.

But most of all, good luck with your pregnancy, and I hope you & your wife find a name you both love and the child can be proud of xx

"GO Nads"
Belly ache now 🤣🤣🤣

Kgiggl3s · 15/12/2023 16:48

Right!? So vulgar and ignorant. The name is Edie

christ 😂 never thought I'd be called ignorant and vulgar for suggesting this was a nice name. I'm not even that taken by it - I just thought it may be helpful as a name close to bradleigh. The responses to this have made me howl with laughter. 😅

100% to each their own though and I totally get not everyone will approve. . Ignorant may be a little OTT though my friend is a lovely caring mum and the name suits her daughter perfectly

readyspaghetti · 15/12/2023 17:05

Bradley is a character in the Morning Show.

Please, tell my wife that her names suggestions are awful!
diddl · 15/12/2023 17:31

Jeez posters still going on about Lisandry when Op has already said it is a relative of her wife's who is very dear to her.

Kellogg1 · 15/12/2023 18:24

I really love the name Parker … the only great name your wife has chosen lol. Please don’t pick Bradleigh

Love Romy and Neva. All of your wife’s choices are horrendous 😂

Maraa · 15/12/2023 19:00

Helena and Maeve are both lovely! Maeva is a beautiful twist on both. Whatever you decide, I’m sure she will suit the name perfectly x
