Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Sorry but they all sound like absolute chav names! With the exception of Helen

llizzie · 14/12/2023 20:20

If you must name the baby before it is born, why not consider your own attributes, such as musician or artist, or any other gifts you were born with?

Leila7654321 · 14/12/2023 20:22

Are you a Spanish speaker? Neva sounds lovely in Spanish but I can see why it seems odd to English speakers. I like Romy the best. Lisandry is awful and sounds like some kind of bacterial infection.

user9513574682 · 14/12/2023 20:25

I would try to avoid names where people might not be sure of the correct pronounciation.
eg. Romy... as in Rome or CD ROM ?
Neva... as in Never or Neeva
My surname gets mispronounced often & it gets a bit tiresome correcting people or just ignoring it !

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/12/2023 20:25

IMO Helena is even nicer than Helen, but then I have reason to be biased.
IIRC there’s a notable Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream - ‘Though she be but little, she is fierce.’ 😂

MadKittenWoman · 14/12/2023 20:28

As others have said, all awful except for Helen.

Hankunamatata · 14/12/2023 20:28

Maeve - means she who rules, I love it.

Sleepytiredyawn · 14/12/2023 20:28

My sons name is the same as his Dads but i only scream it when I’m angry 😂

ColumboTheBestDetective · 14/12/2023 20:29

@Demainsdeslaube Someone suggested 'Elisa', but how about 'Elissa'? It's pronounced as 'Melissa, but without the M' (as my friend with a DD with that name explains it!).

Not run-of-the-mill, but not outlandish either (it's a derivative of 'Elizabeth'). I'd be usure if 'Elisa' is pronounced 'Eleeza' or 'El-eye-za', too, whereas 'Elissa' does follow phonetic rules of pronunciation!

I also like Maude, that a pp mentioned.

Ultimately, it's up to you and your wife. None of us will ever get consensus on the names we choose for our children, so sometimes you just have to roll with it, believe it it, and go for it!

Sleepytiredyawn · 14/12/2023 20:30

not on your list but I love Elena (pronounced as in the Vampire Diaries)

SpottyBrolly · 14/12/2023 20:32

Yes, we like :
Maude
Maeve
Clementina
Helena
Back to Emma
Elisa

All of these names are lovely. If you both like Manon you could always go for Maria with Manon as a nickname/ shortening. Like Marysia or Masha.

BCBird · 14/12/2023 20:34

Don't like any if them apart from Helen.

Frazzledstar1 · 14/12/2023 20:44

DP and I struggled with girls name, what we did was

  • print top 100 girls names
  • I crossed off all the ones I didn’t like
  • he then crossed off the names he didn’t like.
It left us with a shortlist to choose from and eventually we ended up with a name.
trainboundfornowhere · 14/12/2023 20:49

I would ignore anything that either one can’t stand and look again. There are plenty of name sites out there if you are looking for more ideas. One I know of allows you to put in your last name and pick countries you would consider names from and then picks random first names for you based on your selection.

laclochette · 14/12/2023 20:52

Sorry if someone has said this already but lisandry sounds like misandry which means "prejudice against men" 🤣🤣🤣

ohwhatadustyanswer · 14/12/2023 20:55

Lorena?! I can’t believe no one here remembers/has mentioned Lorena Bobbitt??? The woman who cut her husband’s penis off with an eight inch knife….

someonethatyoulovetoomuch · 14/12/2023 20:56

Dahlia is a lovely name. What about Daphne?

DahliaMacNamara · 14/12/2023 20:57

someonethatyoulovetoomuch · 14/12/2023 20:56

Dahlia is a lovely name. What about Daphne?

Couldn't agree more.

Cakeandcoffeea · 14/12/2023 20:58

They are all awful and I’m open minded. Your child will not thank you if you gave them any of these names. However you’re choices are lovely :)

Cherrysoup · 14/12/2023 21:05

Sorry, they’re all awful.

Scirocco · 14/12/2023 21:05

If you like names that sound a bit French, how about...

Aurelie / Aurelia
Chloe
Coraline
Danielle
Faustine
Isabelle (various spellings)
Jacqueline
Lune
Marian (various spellings)
Nicole
Perle
Rochelle
Sophie
Zoe

Robyn101 · 14/12/2023 21:05

Download the Kinder app
it’s like Tinder for baby names, both download and swipe and you’ll get a ‘match’
for the names you both like

WitchyMoon · 14/12/2023 21:07

Love love Romy. Never heard of Lisandry, it sounds a bit weird. But I want to school with a Lysander which is from midsummers night’s dream. I’m a sucker for Shakespeare names, both my children have them along with a shortened nickname.
Helen I find so very dull. I’m a gen xer and there were so many Helen’s and Katie’s it would get to confusing!!

Ozzbozz20 · 14/12/2023 21:08

There is an app where you both download it and link your apps, and swipe names you like or don’t like (like tinder) and any names you both like become a “match” and go into both your favourites! Could be a way to produce a new list you both like?

Please, tell my wife that her names suggestions are awful!
Danielle9891 · 14/12/2023 21:09

Romy is my favourite then Helen. The others aren't to my taste especially Paris, Dallas and Bradleigh which are pretty chavvy.
