Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Dallas could be quite cool. Also what about Texas for a girl. Your names are nice OP . Could you go for Romy-Helen . I'm not keen on wifes other suggestions

Rickx · 14/12/2023 19:46

Firstly congratulations! ... hope you're feeling well and looking forward to the new addition to your family.

It is a tricky decision and responsibility to give someone a name they'll be using for their lifetime. I'd advise not to base the decision solely on whether you 'like' the name or not and add thoughts on what it will be like to have that name for their life, and what the name means to you.

My daughter is named Isabella Alice - with Isabella having always been my favourite girl's name which luckily my wife also really liked, and Alice was my lovely grandmother's name and again luckily my wife was also very fond of her - and Isabella is shortened to Issie which is how she's known by friends and family, which is a good short name ..... although having said all of that, we didn't confirm the name for sure until she was born, and it just seemed to suit her.

Hope that helps a bit - and best of luck with your decision!

auburnglow788 · 14/12/2023 19:47

Sorry but all are awful. Helen is probably the best of the bunch, but a bit boring.

belgiumchocolates · 14/12/2023 19:48

Isabella Alice is beautiful @Rickx

HallieM93 · 14/12/2023 19:50

Romi Dahlia Surname could be nice

Mydogisamentalist · 14/12/2023 19:52

Dahlia is my favourite name of all time! It’s beautiful! Unfortunately my ex husband didn’t agree so I couldn’t use it. I love Romy too. That was also on my list 😁

mathanxiety · 14/12/2023 19:53

Romy and Helen are the only two that would be remotely decent names. Neva at a pinch.

Dallas and Paris are names that would be fine in some xultures but not in others.

The rest of the names are preposterous.

Bradleigh? Yikes.

Lisandry? Misandry?
Lysander is a name. Lisandry isn't.

LalaPaloosa · 14/12/2023 19:55

GorgonzolaSouffle · 12/12/2023 21:48

Helen is awful too.

maybe someone else should name your child 😂😂😂

I agree. It makes me think of an old woman with a man’s haircut

MadMadaMim · 14/12/2023 19:56

Your Wife - the names are awful

You - your names are awful too

Elena is more modern, and nicer IMO, than Helen.

Lysandry seems a made up name, which is fine but still awful.
Maybe both agree to start again and maybe stop trying so hard.

And don't worry too much. I had 'Baby D' for the first week if my DD's life as we still hadn't agreed and on day 6 when we were told we could go home, her name came to us, we both loved it and it's definitely her name.

Congratulations BTW, and yes, clearly evident you are 2 women - people can't read, obvs!

NikNik06 · 14/12/2023 19:56

I have to say that Helen is a name that reminds me of an older lady (60s) and I'm surprised so many people like it. I do like the idea of Helena as someone suggested or Eleanor if your going down that route through. Good luck, it's a long road to agreement but you'll get there - good luck!

mathanxiety · 14/12/2023 19:56

Emma, Cristina, and Lorena are lovely.

auburnglow788 · 14/12/2023 19:57

What about...

Emilia
Leah
Lucia
Sophia
Alexandra
Helena
Lily
Cecily
Cressida
Charlotte
Eleonor
Holly
Allegra
Matilda
Melissa
Anaïs
Rosa
Maeva

GHSP · 14/12/2023 19:58

Poor kid.

’Lisandry? How do you spell that?’

’like Misandry but with an L’

poor, poor kid

Julietta05 · 14/12/2023 20:00
  • Lisandry?? Sounds like a dish or lizard 🦎.
Helen is ok
Hmrk · 14/12/2023 20:02

I agree, Romy, Dahlia & Neva are much nicer than her suggested names. Dahlia and Neva are my favourite

Treesinmygarden · 14/12/2023 20:02

Demainsdeslaube · 13/12/2023 09:09

Yes, we like :
Maude
Maeve
Clementina
Helena
Back to Emma
Elisa

After some thoughts , seems I am obsessed with names now hahaha, my wife is French but I am not. So, Helena (Hélène which is at all not an old woman's name in France, culture really is, a barrier sometimes).

There are French names I love, but I am afraid it would be hard on our child in the UK : Manon , Baptistine and Garance.

Maude, Maeve, Helena, Emma and Elisa are all nice. Elise if want to keep the French flavour?

Or why not look at some of the names one or other of you likes and see if you can make them more, well, mainstream? eg Lisa instead of Lisandry? Or Lena instead of Helena?

My children have some some unusual names
Like Ellesse-jade
Tianna-leigh
Lacey-rae
And my boys are Tyrone-kai
Archie and Billy (most normal lol)
And I didn't pick any apart from last 2 but out of all I like Romy and maybe Helen with a a ?
Bradleigh just no not spelt like that
Yours are better but I woukd say try and agree or mix two .as u can see I don't always go with the norm , but some of them are just like she is trying to secretly wind u up then come out with name thatu say oh that's not so bad we will go with that
Maybe
Romy-leigh
Helena-Paris
Dallas-marie x

Whatever you do, don't hyphenate.

Mama2410 · 14/12/2023 20:05

I think you need to go back to the drawing board. Think about names you love, or names that have inspired you. Write a top ten each, swap lists and cross off your five you dislike most. May help narrow down. Is it the style of name, maybe you could come up with variations on each others likes. Example;

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite) this means meadow but so does Hallie or Marley.
  • Dallas - Della, Dana, Deanna, Demi, Dani
  • Paris - Skye
  • Lisandry - Liana, Lissie
  • Helen ( The only one I like) - Helena, Elena

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it) - Rosie, Naomi, Josie
  • Dahlia - as above Della, Dana, Deanna, Demi, Dani
  • Neva - Reva, Nova, Nia
these are just some of the ones that come up when type names similar to…
mathanxiety · 14/12/2023 20:05

@RoachFish and @BlazingJune

One M before the Y = long O sound = 'Roamy'.

Two Ms before the Y = short O sound = 'Rommy'.

Romy is a very popular name. I wouldn't say there's any danger of being confused with Romany.

Atsocta · 14/12/2023 20:06

I’m not keen on your wife’s or yours tbh
you also have to take your surname into consideration
why not sit together and google popular and unusual baby names for 2024
hopefully one you both love will appear … and you have plenty of time still

This is a much better list, work with this.

We have a girl. Trying to find a name that was both traditional and not everywhere, plus with nods to heritages was a nightmare. We would try a day of calling her by the name and seeing how it felt. Eventually narrowed it down to two we liked and so spent a week alternating until we fell on one naturally. If that helps?

Doublebiscuit77 · 14/12/2023 20:12

BestBadger · 14/12/2023 19:15

You can't call a girl Flora. She'll either be called spreadable at school or when she says her name people will reply "I can't believe it's not butter"

I really think that's an older pretty dated reference? I think more and more girls are being named Flora. (Just googled- apparently the second highest jump, from 184 in 2020 to 283 in 2021.)

Andthereyougo · 14/12/2023 20:14

My favourite French girls name Océane.
Thea is nice, too.

llizzie · 14/12/2023 20:18

I cannot understand the need to name a baby before it is born. Surely a name the baby has to have for the rest of it's life should be based on the baby when born?

Is there a religious reason for naming the baby before it is born?
