Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Sorry but how on earth are people actually liking the name Helen????

Are we in the same year...no, decade?!

Helen. As in, the most basic, receptionist name on the planet. Come on guys, do better.

The other names on your list are awful too with the exception of Romy.

Someone suggested Romily which is lovely.

If place names are your thing, how about India? That one is pretty.

Or Nova, I like that one for you two random Internet strangers.

All the best with the naming. Took us til our daughter was 6 weeks old to finalise her name, which is Indie. I imagine people will tell me that's awful too hahaha

Not saying it’s awful, but shows how it’s personal choice and going with their lists do prefer Helen - and know only one Helen, who is very lovely and Romy over Romilly

iolaus · 14/12/2023 19:06

I think all of them are awful TBH (normally I would just say 'not to my taste but you used the word awful)

Dahlia is the nest of a bad bunch IMHO

Calliopespa · 14/12/2023 19:07

Ok think people aren’t reading the updates. OP has posted a lovely list now.

H007 · 14/12/2023 19:09

I think you both need to start again although of your other lists Maeve is my fav.

Meowandthen · 14/12/2023 19:09

grinchers · 12/12/2023 22:17

Frankie
Jaicey
Jordan
?

Jaicey? What on earth?

The others are bad but that’s ridiculous .

Ellie56 · 14/12/2023 19:09

Completely missing the point but I really wonder how Helen made the list of such odd and awful names

I wonder too!

I think you should drop them all. The Carter’s and Jackson/Jaxon’s of today were once like the Bernard’s and Trevor’s. You cannot go wrong with a traditional name - yes they are popular but so what? I don’t get the need to be unique. Your child is unique in itself. Even with traditional names like Elizabeth, you can always put your own spin on it. Just imagine them when they are at school having their name read out. When they are at a job interview etc. There’s nothing wrong with names like James, Elizabeth, Hannah, Sophie, Philippa, Alexander/dra, John, Oliver, Charles, Thomas, Edward, Kate, Emma, William, Benjamin, Charlotte, Florence etc. Please, please don’t choose a fashionable name! There’s some lovely Victorian names if you look them up. Good luck x

Cazareeto1 · 14/12/2023 19:12

Personally I don’t like any of the names they are not unique as you think and hearing the names in a park being shouted makes me cringe. Sorry. I also think with first baby, ur not carrying taht baby for 9 months ur body hasn’t had to drastically change. So really do you not think first baby she should get to pick considering all the hard work it takes to grow a baby. I think you’re being a bit selfish tbh. Your part doing take long in comparison did it!?! Let’s be honest here. You may also find when you have a baby in your arms a completely different name will come to mind when you see baby’s face…. But don’t be telling her names such she is doing all the work, can you say you are during pregnancy?! No you’re not. Let’s be honest.

TheEternalForever · 14/12/2023 19:14

Not of them are particularly grand tbh. Helen is nice, Romy and Dahlia are okay. Helen Romy? Or Helen Dahlia?

Calliopespa · 14/12/2023 19:14

I was thinking OP if your wife wants to acknowledge the name of her relative Lisandry, could she try Lisandra ( so less like misandry, dysentery etc) or even Alessandra which sounds similar ish when spoken but is much less problematic. Alex or Alice for short?

Parentofeanda · 14/12/2023 19:14

theyre all awful. I prefer Helena over Helen but thats me

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · 14/12/2023 19:14

Helen and Romy are lovely - go with one of those!

(Or both - first and middle names. Romy Helen is particularly nice.)

mummyhat · 14/12/2023 19:15

Helena Romy or Romeigh?! Sounds pretty to me.

Doublebiscuit77 · 14/12/2023 13:20

Sophia and Flora are my favourites from your posts. I think Manon is quite stylish. Gabrielle, Cristina and Emma are fine too (you might spell Christina the English way as unless she moves to Italy or somewhere Spanish speaking she'll get it misspelled a lot).

You can't call a girl Flora. She'll either be called spreadable at school or when she says her name people will reply "I can't believe it's not butter"

JosieHetty · 14/12/2023 19:15

I only like Helen.

Strawberrypicnic · 14/12/2023 19:17

Shodan · 12/12/2023 21:31

Romily would (almost) be a combination of your Romy and her Bradleigh 😁

Don't give them ideas 😅

LesleyA · 14/12/2023 19:18

What is the look feel you’re going for?

Parentofeanda · 14/12/2023 19:18

also if you chose clementina dont end it in the a... the name is clementine.

VickyEadieofThigh · 14/12/2023 19:19

Christmasisonitsway · 12/12/2023 21:29

Holy moly, they're all awful...sorry!

WTF is wrong with Helen? It's a classic, beautiful name.

Gingernan · 14/12/2023 19:20

I don't mind Dahlia,it's a proper name, middle Eastern I think, snd pronounced Dah-lee-ah,not Day-lee-ah like the flowers are pronounced in England.

TheEternalForever · 14/12/2023 19:20

Of the names you say you agree on in the comments, Emma, Helena, Maeve and Lorena are very nice I think!

MamblingOn · 14/12/2023 19:20

Have you tried the Kinder app? Like tinder for baby names where you both swipe for like/ don’t like and it gives you a list of ones you both liked.

Jeannie88 · 14/12/2023 19:20

It's funny because me and DH couldn't agree on a name, both had our favourite and as neither would concede we came up with a totally different and expected one! Go back to the drawing board, start afresh. Xx

Bartonzam · 14/12/2023 19:21

Johnsons kid is called Romy…
