Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

All terrible names! Helen is least awful but it’s quite old fashioned. You just have to keep going!

Shakespearesister · 13/12/2023 16:04

Romy or Dahlia are the nicest. As a teacher, these are the ones also least likely to be made fun of!

Dallas + Dahlia

Why not just kind of combine them 2 to make Delilah ?

Because while the majority of people in the UK aren't religious, a good number are still biblically literate.

So when there are whole books full of other names, naming a child after someone who was called an evil whore and who was eaten by dogs it seems a bit off.

DesertSnow · 13/12/2023 16:09

I agree with the suggestion of Helena as somewhat of a middle ground

BestBadger · 13/12/2023 16:14

Stopbloodybanging · 13/12/2023 15:07

Only got to pg 16, so possibly already suggested, but how about Eloise?
Or, instead of Flora, how about Fiorina (little flower)?

There are a lot more fans of The Damned that I realised.

What area of the U.K. do you live in that this could possibly be true? Is it some kind of troglodyte white backwater?

In cities names are fully multicultural.

Cornwall?

I wouldn't use any of them, even for a pet I didn't like. But, that shouldn't influence either of you. We used the "pick the letters from a scrabble bag method" Abgeeev, Nyxwioo and Trevory all turned out fine. Arsehol had a few issues growing up, but is now an MP in a red wall constituency.

🤦‍♀️🤣

incywincyspidery · 13/12/2023 16:40

Firstly, no name will be to everyone's taste. So ignore everyone telling you a certain name is terrible. The only opinions that matter are yours and your wife's. It is lovely to get some suggestions on here that you may not have thought of and at the end of the day, you only need to agree on one or two names. DH and I couldn't agree on names for our DD, now 23. I thought his favourite was snobby (Lucinda), he just hated mine (Eloise). We literally agreed on two names- not the absolute favourites of either of us but ones we both were happy with.
So it is true that you are very unlikely to have the same favourite, but it seems you do have some names you both love and when your DD arrives she will become the name you choose.

There is also Kristina in other countries.

Yes, your names are much better. I like them. Your wife's are awful. Romy is a really lovely name. Wasn't there an actress called Romy?

That's should be a constant thread on Mumsnet. Want your baby's name checked? Ask a teacher!

crostini · 13/12/2023 18:50

Neva is gorgeous. Helen is nice. This rest are not to my taste.
Bradleigh is definitely one of the worst names I've ever heard

Ramalangadingdong · 13/12/2023 19:16

Romy Schneider

That’s it. Thanks.

Manon would NOT work in a state secondary school unless she wanted to be nicknamed Manon Topajah.

Plus her name would be shouted at every footbal match.

MAN ON!

I think you're thinking of Jezebel. Delilah was a different character: she was Samson's lover and betrayed him to her own people (the Philistines). That's about it. We don't know how she died, or indeed anything at all about what happened to her after Samson was captured.

Kattiekat · 13/12/2023 20:13

really sorry but I don’t like any of them.
I definitely don’t like names which are spelt differently to how they should be, like bradleigh!

I suggest imaging your child as an adult,
who will have to spell their name out all the time and will have to be called it by other adults. I wouldn’t want to be a grown woman called poppy for example.

only decent name there is Helen.

these days people try so hard to have unusual names. There are 3 Delilah’s in my daughters year. I know a lot Josh’s and a hand full of Ella’s. All under 10.

I sound grumpy… I’m not. And I am sure you will agree on the prefect name when you meet your bundle of joy

You're right! I think Delilah died when Sampson murder-suicided everyone.

Her notable feature was repeatedly betraying her lover.

Oh I thought she said the names she liked were Elodie and Johanna!

did she mean they were their names?!

Yup. Her name is Élodie. No way I want our daughter to have the name of the woman I have sex with.

That’s a very odd way to look at it. Loads of children are named after a parent and presumably that is the person that the other parent has sex with
