Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

You're never going to find a name that is both your favourite. If you both like Helen, then go for Helen. It's a good name, easy to write, easy to pronounce, easy to travel with and it has a long history (Helen of Troy).

Cornwall?

I don't understand the Manon Topajah reference about Manon.

Although as Manon is another unfortunate literary, (and ballet and opera character) with a very questionable reputation who came to a sticky end it might not be my first choice.

Manon Lescaut is not the only literary Manon.

Mirabai · 13/12/2023 21:17

Anyway Manon is simply a diminutive of Marie/Marianne.

ClemmyTine · 13/12/2023 21:27

There will always be someone that doesn't like your choice so just choose what you like.

You're right! I think Delilah died when Sampson murder-suicided everyone.

And all over a bloody haircut. Typical.

Womencanlift · 13/12/2023 20:55

That’s a very odd way to look at it. Loads of children are named after a parent and presumably that is the person that the other parent has sex with

How is it odd? I don't want to scream our daughter's name while having sex. How is it "weird "

Manon Lescaut is not the only literary Manon.

I think it’s man on top of you. There’s also Manon des Sources. I think it’s sweet. And the final n isn’t really pronounced anyway.

Yes, your names are much better. I like them. Your wife's are awful. Romy is a really lovely name. Wasn't there an actress called Romy?

You’re thinking of Romy and Michelle’s highschool reunion…

the dance routine pops into my head when I think of the name Romy…. and BoJo’s daughter.

New list name meanings

Maude: powerful battler, mighty in battle
Maeve: intoxicating, she who rules, goddess of love and desire
Clementina: mild, merciful
Helena: shining light
Emma: universal
Elisa: God is a promise

Don’t like Elisa or Clementina, but the rest are great. Helena is nicest.

The actress was Romy Schneider. "Romy" wasn't her real name which was Rosemarie.

Helena
Elodie
Aurelie
Sophie
Chloe
Claire
I'm sorry I'm on my phone and cannot put accents on.
There are so many beautiful yet strong French/English names. I'm sure you will find something.
If you want to go more English Maude, Mabel and Martha are all lovely.

Well, I tried to go "middle-ground" , so it's not too classic. I honestly prefer "traditional" names : Lola , Carla, Fiona , Flora, Sophia, Gabrielle.

These are all nice names - particularly Sophia and Gabrielle. I like Helena too.

Yes. Romy Shneider

That's should be a constant thread on Mumsnet. Want your baby's name checked? Ask a teacher!

Dahlia will slightly raise an eyebrow in the staffroom though nowhere near as 'out there' as some these days

Fink · 13/12/2023 19:49

I think you're thinking of Jezebel. Delilah was a different character: she was Samson's lover and betrayed him to her own people (the Philistines). That's about it. We don't know how she died, or indeed anything at all about what happened to her after Samson was captured.

Isn't Delilah sung at football matches?

MaraisCinnamon · 13/12/2023 23:35

I don't think the French Manon really works in English. It is bound to be pronounced Man-on or Man-ong which are both hideous. I agree that Manon Lescaut is the Manon that automatically springs to mind and she is hardly an inspiring character.

Simpleblessingsxx · 13/12/2023 23:39

crostini · 13/12/2023 18:50

Neva is gorgeous. Helen is nice. This rest are not to my taste.
Bradleigh is definitely one of the worst names I've ever heard

Neva would I have expected this, 🤦‍♀️🤣

I know 2 Manons and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t know how to pronounce it. Opera aside, Manon Lescaut is a not very widely read 18c novel. Manon des Sources is a more likely reference.

MaraisCinnamon · 14/12/2023 00:09

Well many Brits can't pronounce 'macaron' (MA-CA-RO-N) or 'Macron' (MA-CRO-N) so I doubt Manon would fare much better in cross-section. Give me Prévost over Pagnol any day of the week but each to their own I suppose.

The film was released in 1986. Good film but I'd forgotten about it.

Both the opera and the ballet are standards - you're never very far away from a production of one of them. The Royal Ballet has cinema screenings of Manon in February. Neither are particularly favourites of mine and I've still managed to see them more times than I can remember just because they turn up.

SABM10 · 14/12/2023 00:43

I like Romy. Not keen on the others from your original list. Helena possibly but to me Helen is very... 'middle aged librarian', sorry 😅. Dahlia is OK but not my taste.

I love Manon, possibly due to adoring Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources as a child! I would know how to say it but don't think it's a particularly difficult pronunciation anyway, once somebody has been told how to say it?

Many names have slight variants in pronunciation - eg Helena could be Hell-ay-nah or Hell-enn-ah, Romy could be Romm-ee (short first syllable like at the start of Romilly) or Roe-mee, Dahlia could be Darr-lee-ah or Day-lee-ah. I have a name that is often mispronounced (it's a real name, not made up, but is pretty uncommon) and I really don't have the major trauma that some people seem to think is inevitable as a result!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 14/12/2023 00:45

And of course there's Puccini's and Massenet's operas. Puccini's is probably more regularly performed nowadays but all 3 "Manons" are rep standards.

It’s a novel by Pagnol published 1962.

The idea that the name of the opera in any way shape or form affects a very old name diminutive of Marie is massively reaching.

Blueink · 14/12/2023 02:58

I think your wife's suggestion of Helen could actually date really well, names come back around and there's a sufficient gap now from when it was popular. Helen of Troy makes it a very strong name. Going against the grain of PP, as much prefer it to Helena, unnecessarily pretentious.

Romy is a bit more whimsical, there is also Romy Fraser who founded Neal's Yard, still the best of your list and musings.

Delilah as some PP have suggested is becoming the most common current name, I personally really dislike it and can't help thinking of the dark undertones of the Tom Jones song, also having 5 of them in the class will be very annoying. Dahlia has similar connotations, with the infamous historic murder, I could see how it could become more common too, if Delilah has.
