Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Rommy has two MM's. I know this because I previously had a horse called Rommy.

😂😂😂😂😂😂

Previously to this, the only ones we both agreed on was Emma, Cristina and Lorena.

So why not go with one of those? Preferably not Lorena, though.

BestBadger · 13/12/2023 14:21

I wouldn't use any of them, even for a pet I didn't like. But, that shouldn't influence either of you. We used the "pick the letters from a scrabble bag method" Abgeeev, Nyxwioo and Trevory all turned out fine. Arsehol had a few issues growing up, but is now an MP in a red wall constituency.

Fink · 13/12/2023 14:29

I would suggest both of you starting by listing what criteria are most important to you in a name, e.g.

  • it works in both English and French
  • it goes well with the surname (including no unfortunate initials spelling CUL or something)
  • the etymology/meaning is significant
  • people (family or historical figures) you admire have been called that
  • it has unambiguous spelling/pronunciation
  • you can imagine her as an adult using that name at university, in work ...
  • it sounds nice

and so on. Then compare lists to understand what each of you hopes for out of the name. Then is the time to try to find names that fit both of your top 2 or 3 criteria. As pp have said, there are ways to try out a name publicly before finally deciding - using it on a coffee order for example.

30yearoldvirgin · 13/12/2023 14:30

Helen!? Are you having a 55 year old?

MarkWithaC · 13/12/2023 14:36

I like Romy. Helen's OK, inoffensive, but nothing special. I'd like Paris for a boy but not a girl. I think Manon is lovely; would your wife go for that? Or Helena?

resm · 13/12/2023 14:36

Anna/Ana
Charlotte
Henrietta
Mabel
Genevieve
Laura/Lora

namechangetwo · 13/12/2023 14:46

Hey Op, I quite like both your names choices
Romilly is a twist on Romy if you like that?
I like Eris and Cassady which aren't on your list but you might like?
Good luck!

dawngreen · 13/12/2023 14:46

Helen and Romy then you just need a second child.

AnneButNotHathaway · 13/12/2023 14:51

Helen is fine, others... not so much.

TheCurtainQueen · 12/12/2023 21:42

You need to stop the ridiculous spellings.

Christina is a name, Cristina is not.

You need to stop the xenophobia. Other countries' spellings are just as valid.

You have no idea of OP's heritage.

MerryChristmasToYou · 13/12/2023 14:56

@TheCurtainQueen , Cristina is how it is spelt in several european countries and languages

Rommy has two MM's. I know this because I previously had a horse called Rommy.

I've never seen it spelled with double 'm' and I'm not sure what your horse has to do with anything.

amusedbush · 13/12/2023 15:06

fashionqueen1183 · 13/12/2023 14:03

Oh I thought she said the names she liked were Elodie and Johanna!

did she mean they were their names?!

Yes, the OP and her wife are called Elodie and Johanna - she posted that in response to someone who asked what their names are.

Westwindworries · 13/12/2023 15:07

If Lisandry is a family name, you could use it as a middle name. Our DD has a dreadful middle name, but she says "It's a family name" and people just accept that.

Stopbloodybanging · 13/12/2023 15:07

Only got to pg 16, so possibly already suggested, but how about Eloise?
Or, instead of Flora, how about Fiorina (little flower)?

Notreallynewbutanewusernameanyway · 13/12/2023 15:09

As someone with an 'unusual' name, my advice: THINK CAREFULLY AND DON'T SADDLE YOUR KID WITH A PROBLEMATIC NAME. IT'S NOT FAIR.
That said, Helen is lovely.

Calliopespa · 13/12/2023 15:12

Nanny0gg · 13/12/2023 15:04

I've never seen it spelled with double 'm' and I'm not sure what your horse has to do with anything.

The horse is relevant as it was called Rommy so knew all about how to spell it. But I think that is only the horse version myself. Rommy looks like rummy as in “Ew, what’s that rummy smell?”

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/12/2023 15:14

Velvian · 12/12/2023 21:27

I think you have to ho with Romy or Helen. Luckily, those are the best 2 names by far.

This.
I knew a baby Romy years ago - I do quite like it.
IMO Bradleigh and Lisandry are dreadful - please don’t saddle any poor little baby with either of those, unless of course you hate them already.

Dallas is beyond awful.

willWillSmithsmith · 13/12/2023 15:17

Where on earth have the pair of you dug these names up from. Sorry OP but apart from Helen all the names are unappealing. Even Bradley has a weird, and dare I say, chavvy looking, spelling.

I wouldn’t normally opine out loud on awful names but you did ask.

Firefly2009 · 13/12/2023 15:19

Paris is okay.
The others are not okay.

CleansUpButWouldPreferNotTo · 13/12/2023 15:22

If you both like Helen, then how about a variation?

Ellen
Elaine
Elinor / Eleanor
Ilona

And same for Romy:

Ruby
Rosalie
Naomi

tortoiseshellcats · 13/12/2023 15:32

I think that new list is great! The french names are lovely but I agree they will be mispronounced constantly

saoirse31 · 13/12/2023 15:34

Helen and Romy are both lovely! Toss for it!!!!

Deathraystare · 13/12/2023 15:35

I like Romy but as for the others (sorry Helen was an ex of my Brother's so that name is dead to me!).
