Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

What about Helena? She likes Helen, you seem to like names with an A on the end…job done.

Good shout! That's a lovely name.

Simpleblessingsxx · 13/12/2023 13:37

Seriously, Manon even if different pronunciation from sp, in UK it would be pronounced as it looks 🤦‍♀️ Anyway enough from me, love name threads, all the best with final choice 😁

mn29 · 13/12/2023 13:40

None are to my taste but her list is much more awful than yours, especially Bradleigh!

HipHop63 · 13/12/2023 13:35

Rommy has two MM's. I know this because I previously had a horse called Rommy.

I think it’s Romy for people who aren’t horses. But I still think it sounds like a camper van brand name.

Ecnerual · 13/12/2023 13:42

Find the ONS list of the top 1000 names and go through it together until you find something you both like. You can start part way down if you know you don't want a commonly used name.

Of the names you've chosen Helen is the one I'd most likely go for, or Helena, I also like Paris having known a boy and girl Paris who were both lovely (though I wouldn't use it myself).

Élodie and Johanna :)

Lovely names!

Demainsdeslaube · 13/12/2023 05:55

Euhm, no. It's an unknown sperm donor.

@Demainsdeslaube

that's simpler in some ways & a shame in others.

Definitely have a look though, I think the swipe apps are great.

Snazzysausage · 13/12/2023 13:47

Helen, Helena or what about Liesel/Liezel. The others aren't nice imo.

Mikimoto · 13/12/2023 13:47

French-speaking friends of mine have a daughter called Elea.

Personally, I love Manon.

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 13/12/2023 13:47

Step one congratulations @Demainsdeslaube & I tend to agree that "I thought the ' I am pregnant' and 'my wife' would do it." but you might be surprised at some of the stuff men say.

Ok I don't think we have the same taste in names necessarily but I can give some advice on process.

  1. Buy a big book of names / use the baby name websites to each come up with a 'long list' and I mean long

  2. swap lists

  3. OH crosses out any and all names they want to veto. Any that remain go onto the short list.

Repeat steps 1-3 until the short lists are long enough

Compare & merge short lists any name that was on both short lists is in bold (if you're doing this on a computer) or has an asterisk and goes to the top of the shortlist for consideration.

Good luck

housethatbuiltme · 13/12/2023 13:47

I dont think your names are that mismatched at all... they are both mostly modern/trendy styled.

Bradleigh is bad, Lisandry is a little frillier than the others and Helen is very classic compared to the rest.

Other than that I think Romy, Dallas, Neva, Dahlia & Paris sound like a matching styled Sibset.

fashionqueen1183 · 13/12/2023 13:48

Demainsdeslaube · 13/12/2023 09:09

Yes, we like :
Maude
Maeve
Clementina
Helena
Back to Emma
Elisa

After some thoughts , seems I am obsessed with names now hahaha, my wife is French but I am not. So, Helena (Hélène which is at all not an old woman's name in France, culture really is, a barrier sometimes).

There are French names I love, but I am afraid it would be hard on our child in the UK : Manon , Baptistine and Garance.

What about Elodie Helene?

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 13/12/2023 13:49

Elodie Helene

sounds lovely to me

Ecnerual · 13/12/2023 13:52

fashionqueen1183 · 13/12/2023 13:48

What about Elodie Helene?

I think the OP said her wife (or maybe the OP herself) is called Élodie

TiredMummma · 13/12/2023 13:56

All of these names are awful.

You are welcome

WobblyCat · 13/12/2023 13:57

If there are two you sort of could agree on then you can possibly make headway when Helen or Romy. I'd go with those because it's down to you two and not MN users. You'll be the ones having to use the name day to day.

forgotmyusername1 · 13/12/2023 13:57

Simpleblessingsxx · 13/12/2023 12:42

Congratulations 😊

When you ask I suppose you have to accept honest opinions and for me anyway they're all awful with the exception of Bradleigh (prefer Bradley) & Helen (prefer Ellen)

to be fair the thread title is 'tell my wife her name suggestions are awful'

mumsnet obliged

CarrotsAndCheese · 13/12/2023 13:59

Love the updated list, and many of the French names other posters have suggested. Has anyone mentioned Aurélie or Amélie yet? Helena was on my list. Hélène is lovely also, as is Eloïse.

2mummies1baby · 13/12/2023 14:00

Rolling my eyes at all the people who have read this:

"I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I..."

and are still confused about your gender!

With regards to names, make a shortlist of names which both of you would consider, even if you don't love them- don't include any names which one of you dislikes, even if the other loves it- there's just no point! Also worth having a separate 'middle names' list.

Keep trying out the names in different combinations with middle names, particularly paying attention to how they sound with your surnames.

Good luck!

TreacleMines · 13/12/2023 13:29

If you like Clement- I have come across a little girl called Clemency which you might like.

My wife and I couldn’t agree on girls names AT ALL…

I liked- Cristabel, Felicity, Loveday, Honeysuckle and Aloyisia.

She liked- Joan.

🤦‍♀️

I tried the ‘I’m giving birth so I’m choosing’ but it didn’t wash. Thank fuck we had a boy before it actually came to divorce!

Loveday?

that would have been hell at school

fashionqueen1183 · 13/12/2023 14:03

Ecnerual · 13/12/2023 13:52

I think the OP said her wife (or maybe the OP herself) is called Élodie

Oh I thought she said the names she liked were Elodie and Johanna!

did she mean they were their names?!

TheShoulder · 13/12/2023 14:07

Manon isn't pronounced Man-uh Hmm

Manon and Baptistine are lovely. Your new list of Maude, Maeve, Clementina, Helena, Emma and Elisa are all beautiful.

Elissa is another name you might like or Clémence.

Have you looked at the top 100 names in France for recent years? Quite a few of your names are very popular in France at the moment (Emma, Romy, Manon) so maybe there will be other names on the list that reflect your taste.

Louise has been reigning supreme for some time in France. MN hates the name as every other girl in the 80s had Louise as a middle name but if you like Helen and Emma, maybe 80s names are your thing?

LAMPS1 · 13/12/2023 14:10

Romy is a lovely name…very international I think.
Lisandra is also lovely but not Lisandry….too much like misandry.
Helena is classic and elegant.
I also like Christina from your list.
And Clementine

forgotmyusername1 · 13/12/2023 14:11

Alisandra?

GMsAWinner · 13/12/2023 14:12

I prefer the updated list.

OP, we'd basically agreed on a couple of names for either sex, but after DH watched me go through 33 hours of labour, he turned around the said to me, he really didn't mind either choice or if I really wanted one of the others I'd suggested, he realised it really didn't matter to him - be warned!
