Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

I’m really surprised that your wife has put Helen along with the other names as it seems completely different. Is it of sentimental importance?
good luck and hope you come to an agreement.

EzraJones · 13/12/2023 12:21

Presumably "neva" is some variation on "nevaeh" (heaven backwards) ?

Just don't. It's not original, and it's not big or clever ;)

LylaLee · 13/12/2023 12:22

Isn't romily a type of lettuce?

Hotgoose · 13/12/2023 12:23

Oh goodness, please name the baby Helen, it’s the only nice one on either list!

WaltzingWaters · 13/12/2023 12:24

I love the name Romy. All the others are awful. The least awful on your wife’s list is Helen, but that’s very drab/boring in my opinion (and very very different to her other suggestions!).

Maybe go back to the drawing board and keep looking.

Yes, we like :
Maude
Maeve
Clementina
Helena
Back to Emma
Elisa

After some thoughts , seems I am obsessed with names now hahaha, my wife is French but I am not. So, Helena (Hélène which is at all not an old woman's name in France, culture really is, a barrier sometimes).

There are French names I love, but I am afraid it would be hard on our child in the UK : Manon , Baptistine and Garance.

I like Helena, Emma and Elisa. Manon would be OK if you live in Wales, but probably not in England.

Non, Kevin is popular in France along with Liam, Arthur, Ethan, Lucas…

Kevin was briefly popular in France among people from the same kind of social class that might think it was a good idea to call their daughter Bradleigh in an English speaking country. Being called Kevin in France is now a source of embarrassment. The other names you list aren't really equivalent, especially Arthur and Lucas. It's possible that Liam and Ethan might eventually go the way of Kevin. But Kevin is its own phenomenon. Google it.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/12/2023 12:30

Romy is the least awful, but Boris and his current wife have just used that, lol. Don’t like any of the rest, sorry.

Denimdenimdenim · 13/12/2023 12:33

I like Helen.

I know a girl called Roma (I love the name Roma, it suits her really well) which is similar to Romy.

But, yeah, it's not my favourite list if names. Sorry, OP. 🙈

CuttingAllTheFlowersStill · 13/12/2023 12:37

I really like your revised list!

strawberry2017 · 13/12/2023 12:37

She might as well just call the child Chav with that list of names.
If you do her favourite at least spell it Bradley so the kid doesn't spend its whole life correcting people.
Only one on there that's nice is Helen.

Takenobull · 13/12/2023 12:40

Gosh they’re all dreadful.

The only one I like a bit is Romy but I know of 3 others and they’re all delinquent children!

Are you trying to be different? If you are please try to consider that perhaps your need to be different is overriding how important a name actually is to a child/person. Sometimes being less different makes you stand out more when a name is concerned. Especially with todays trends.

A similar name that you might like but is a little less offensive in my opinion is Remy.

cerisepanther73 · 13/12/2023 12:41

I like Helen and Dhalia is ok too
sounds like something out of Greek Goddess fables mythology to me.

MerryChristmasToYou · 13/12/2023 12:41

Bradleigh ( her favourite) - awful, bad spelling of a boy's name
Dallas - might work as a middle name
Paris - male name in greek mythology
Lisandry - too close to misandry and lizardy
Helen - lovely, much nicer than Helena

Romy - not keen
Dahlia -Day-lia or Dahl-ya?
Neva - nev-uh, neeva or nay-va

Manon is a popular name in Wales.
Maude and Barbara are fab

CactusMactus · 13/12/2023 12:42

I don't even like Helen... no offence to the Helens on here. But it's just a name I associate with a woman in an office eating a yogurt and complaining about HR...

Simpleblessingsxx · 13/12/2023 12:42

Congratulations 😊

When you ask I suppose you have to accept honest opinions and for me anyway they're all awful with the exception of Bradleigh (prefer Bradley) & Helen (prefer Ellen)

caringcarer · 13/12/2023 12:44

I've got a Bradley but he is a boy and named before Brad Pitt became famous. Helen or Helena sounds nice.

Katiesaidthat · 13/12/2023 12:45

Paris, Dallas and Lisandry, awful.
Helen i Like. More so Helena.
Romy is okayish, a bit bland. And Dahlia is awful also.

Katiesaidthat · 13/12/2023 12:47

My daughter´s best friend is Manon, we´re in Spain. She´s 5. Much better than Dahlia, Dallas and the rest.

Maraa · 13/12/2023 12:52

If you like clement for a boy, what about Clemmie? I know a little Clemmie and at first I wasn’t too keen if I’m honest, however the name suits her perfectly and she’s an adorable little girl

Butchyrestingface · 13/12/2023 12:56

Please call the wean Helen. Only decent name on the list(s).

SKG2007 · 13/12/2023 12:59

BlazingJune · 12/12/2023 22:13

Romy.

Is the Roamy or Rommy?

Roamy sounds as if they are a Romany. (might get teased.)

Dd is Romy (to rhyme with homie- sorry I'm not a native speaker, so I hope it makes sense). I obviously love the name. It is a contraction of her two (longer) names and not stand alone in our case.

magicscares · 13/12/2023 13:00

Hi & congrats on the pregnancy!

I like Helene & best. You are more than likely to come across kids with way more unusual names than these. Emma is fine but it sounds like you both like names that are a bit unusual. Manon is beautiful, but my consideration is that kids may shorten it to Man & tease her.

magicscares · 13/12/2023 13:00

& Roma best, that should say.
