Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Congratulations! I don’t like your original list but your new list is lovely!

Love Maude, Clementine, Elise, Eleanor, Eloise, Helene.

cerisepanther73 · 13/12/2023 11:36

I like Romy and Romleigh too

It's a common Welsh name and also French, but might remind some people of the story of the prostitue Manon Lescaut.
Having said that, people name their children Carmen...

Or the opera or Manon Des Sources.

londonguild · 13/12/2023 11:38

I'm sorry- but they all sound awful! I prefer traditional names x

Newsenmum · 13/12/2023 11:39

I prefer Helena, would that work? Helena or Romy and see how she looks.

We have a similar issue and are going to have to go with our compromised name.

Fraaahnces · 13/12/2023 11:41

Wow! So many rude and intrusive comments. Congrats on the pregnancy! I love Elodie, Maude, Clementine (No a on the end. It’s already a long name.) Romy, and Elise. (I went to school with an Elisa and she was a bully.) You can take the A from Clementina and put it on Helen. Love Helena.

I know someone that called their daughter Zoe when she was born, then changed it just before they went to register her. I honestly think that they went through a whole baby name book, got through to Z, then didn't find something they "loved", and just got stuck at Z.

There was a name that they loved, but her best friend had a daughter of the same name, so she didn't feel that she could use it. She spoke to the best friend who said "don't be daft - if you love it, use it!", so she did!

I also know of someone that called their son Zinzan. Maybe they had the same dilemma as my other friend!

@Demainsdeslaube I see you've agreed that you might need to start again. I think of names considering the child at all ages - toddler, teenager, adult. That's where Helen falls down with me. I just can't picture a toddler Helen.

I do like some of the classic names that were previously seen as old fashioned. Ava (I know this has been done to death in recent years), Ada, Emily, Maude, Agatha, Amelia, Aurelia.

I have a friend who called their daughter Adeline, or Addie for short, which I think is lovely.

Good luck finding something you both love!

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 13/12/2023 11:44

Oh gosh OP, your wife’s name choices are awful! (Sorry OP’s wife.) Like really, really, really bad. Possibly the worst name list I’ve seen on here for a long time because usually there is at least one name I like or could tolerate! But Bradleigh is soooo chavvy, Paris and Dallas have a cheap porn star vibe, and the other name just seems made up. Your list is much nicer. I love Romy, quite like Neva and while I don’t really like Dahlia, it’s definitely tolerable.

How about Iris - same ending as Dallas and Paris? Juno or Alba? Kind of unusual like your wife’s names but also feminine and … not made up? Sienna, Florence, Roma? All cities but less porn star sounding than the others.

Demainsdeslaube · 13/12/2023 09:09

Yes, we like :
Maude
Maeve
Clementina
Helena
Back to Emma
Elisa

After some thoughts , seems I am obsessed with names now hahaha, my wife is French but I am not. So, Helena (Hélène which is at all not an old woman's name in France, culture really is, a barrier sometimes).

There are French names I love, but I am afraid it would be hard on our child in the UK : Manon , Baptistine and Garance.

These are nice. I liked Helena but only pronounced Hell-a-na not Helen-a but that may or may not bother you.

there is a little girl in my daughters class called Elisa but people seem to struggle and she gets called Elsa or Elise. It’s a lovely name though.

Lois fits with your list.

MargotBamborough · 13/12/2023 11:48

If you both like Helen, why don't you just go with that?

Mirabai · 13/12/2023 11:50

Springcleaninginsummer · 13/12/2023 10:11

Manon would NOT work in a state secondary school unless she wanted to be nicknamed Manon Topajah.

What area of the U.K. do you live in that this could possibly be true? Is it some kind of troglodyte white backwater?

In cities names are fully multicultural.

Crikeyisthatthetime · 13/12/2023 11:50

Your last list is full of beautiful names. Personally think Clementina is too much, but can see the attraction. And Manon is a lovely name too. Not sure why you wouldn't use it, people would recognise it as a name?

CasaAmarela · 13/12/2023 11:50

I LOVE Romy or Neva. I really dislike all the others including Helen (sorry).

Just seen your update.

Your revised list is much better.

I would pick Maeve, Helena, Emma or Manon, which would be perfectly fine in the UK.

If your wife is French, tell her that the first four names on her original list would cause your child similar problems to being called Kevin in France.

PerspiringElizabeth · 13/12/2023 11:58

God parts of this thread really are a shame 🙄

OP I very much like your previous consideration of Emma and it goes nicely with your names as well. But also I do quite like Carter for a girl so maybe best I don’t comment 🫣

Maude is ace.

Maple? Gwen? Joanie (again a good mix of your names!)?

Mirabai · 13/12/2023 11:58

Non, Kevin is popular in France along with Liam, Arthur, Ethan, Lucas…

ALittleTeawithmilk · 13/12/2023 12:02

I love your choice of Romy, there was a beautiful German actress named Romy

And I really like the name Helen. (Your wife’s choice but you like it - I think you said.)

I’d choose Romy Helen as first and middle names.

I haven’t RTFT so apologies if it’s already been suggested:

MarthaMayWho · 13/12/2023 12:04

Sorry op, you are probably sick of suggestions but I've thought of a few more.

Ilaria
Adele /Adela
Yvette
Iris
Bethany
Annette

Cerealkiller4U · 13/12/2023 12:04

Dahlia?

like the movie star that was brutally murdered and chopped up?

Grammarnut · 13/12/2023 12:04

Try for a traditional name. Helen is lovely, and can be Helena or Eleanor/Ellinor if you like (all the same name). The others are ok but liable to cause your future DD a problem at school and later (original spellings are never a good idea, either: you and the DC will spend all your lives spelling it).

TheSeasonalNameChange · 13/12/2023 12:07

What about Claudia or Claudine?

Cerealkiller4U · 13/12/2023 12:07

A baby girl and bradleigh?

like Bradley?

bohemianmullet · 13/12/2023 12:11

Romilly? Helen is a nice name but quite different to all the rest. But it's classic (for you) and she likes it so is that not the obvious choice?

Josephine
Severine
Sabine
Adrienne

?

Wishimaywishimight · 13/12/2023 12:12

I like Romy, the others are pretty awful.
