Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Helen is due a come back. Names like June and Barbara are already on trend (Coren-/Mitchel).

It would be really sweet if you used the El part of your wife's name in the baby's name and the an or anna part of your name in the next baby.

Eleanor/Ellena/Eloise and Antonia/Anabel/Anna/Anton

Catlord · 13/12/2023 08:30

Romy and Helen are both really nice! Add them to the list and keep looking. Bradleigh and Dahlia though?! Nah.

LOL!

Just because two media types have used those names doesn't mean they are a come back,

ChanelNo19EDT · 13/12/2023 08:34

I like June, but Barbara is so awful, words fail me.

Rosscameasdoody · 13/12/2023 07:44

I think they’re intending Bradleigh as the female version of Bradley. Still awful though !!

Oh yeah, realised after reading some of the comments. Makes it even worse if it was intended for a girl!

Demainsdeslaube · 13/12/2023 08:51

You perfectly know. The person I responded to, implied that because probably I was a man I'd give the baby my last name.

But we are both women, and the heteronormativity doesn't work here. Across the globe, from Africa, to the Americas, From Europe to Asia, it is by far the most common heritage tracing. Men giving their children their family names. Denying that, like I have heard a lot of straight people do, is simply false. MN isn't the world, or even the UK where it applies.

I am interested if any of the names suggested by other people have made the potential list. If so which ones?

Demainsdeslaube · 13/12/2023 08:57

The ideas so far aren’t great, OP, but you have plenty of time. Is this your first baby? Discussing names for our DD felt very random when being pregnant felt like something other people did!

I like Christina/Cristina, I love Christie as a nn.

Would it help to discuss with your wife what you definitely don’t want in terms of vibe eg frilly/unisex/surnamey/monarch names? That might help you both get in the same zone.

Yes, it's our first baby. But it seems unanimous that we need to research further. Thanks everyone!

I was so indecisive we changed DD's name after she was born. Naming a child is hard!

commonground · 13/12/2023 09:03

Might have been suggested (haven't read all, so soz!)....
But from the vibe of both your choices...how about Lee? A neat little name, (and after the v cool Lee Miller, although I think her full name was Elizabeth).

(Or Astrid. Astrid is always a winner, IMHO!)

Yes, we like :
Maude
Maeve
Clementina
Helena
Back to Emma
Elisa

After some thoughts , seems I am obsessed with names now hahaha, my wife is French but I am not. So, Helena (Hélène which is at all not an old woman's name in France, culture really is, a barrier sometimes).

There are French names I love, but I am afraid it would be hard on our child in the UK : Manon , Baptistine and Garance.

I love Manon.

GoatsInBoats · 13/12/2023 09:11

Elisa is also beautiful. Unusual but not weird.

hennybeans · 13/12/2023 09:29

I love the name Manon!

But I’m going to suggest Lucinda.

Your wife being French explains a lot - she doesn’t have any sense of the connotations of her name list. Similarly when posters shortlist French names here they’re often old lady names - Colette, Celine, Simone, Yvette etc.

Manon is lovely and would be fine here, although some people would pronounce the n until corrected. I also love Apolline, Maëlys and Romane.

Of your current list I like Maude, Hélène and Elisa (which was another name for Dido queen of Carthage).

forgotmyusername1 · 13/12/2023 09:56

That is a much better list. Some lovely names on there

WinchSparkle80 · 13/12/2023 09:56

Helena would be nice, don’t like any to be honest.

As a kid with an unusual name back in the 80s it absolutely sucks….

People not being able to pronounce it or spell it or always pausing before they say your name in a weak unsure way…personally I hated it and still don’t go by my actual name.

I might just be uptight about it though after 40 odd years…

BaronessBomburst · 13/12/2023 09:57

Manon works in English. I think most people would be familiar with it.
I like, from your latest list:

Maude
Meave
Manon

Does M work with your surnames?

Diaria · 13/12/2023 09:58

👋 to baby Helena if she’s reading this in the years to come

Springcleaninginsummer · 13/12/2023 10:11

Manon would NOT work in a state secondary school unless she wanted to be nicknamed Manon Topajah.

Pertinentowl · 13/12/2023 10:16

Helen is alright but the rest of the names belong buried in a deep dark wood

ZinniaB · 13/12/2023 10:24

Sorry if I’m repeating, but make the most of your access to the most wonderful and interesting international names!

In the UK it is generally frowned upon to use a name unrelated to your heritage so I would go ahead and have fun choosing something international and classic but unusual in the UK.

Or, as you both like Helen/a, find more Shakespearean inspiration:

Marina
Cordelia
Rosalind
Iris
Adriana
Celia
Portia
Viola
etc…

DottyLottieLou · 13/12/2023 10:41

I think I would have to go with Romy.

MarthaMayWho · 13/12/2023 10:43

A much, much nicer list op.

Helena
Emma
Elisa

Being my favourites

Oh just thought I'd suggest Anaïs. Don't know what it's cultural connotations are in France but I've always loved it and I think having a genuine French connection a French name would be lovely.

Gwenhwyfar · 13/12/2023 10:44

"Oh just thought I'd suggest Anaïs. Don't know what it's cultural connotations are in France but I've always loved it and I think having a genuine French connection a French name would be lovely."

And people will pronounce it Annay like they do with the perfume.
