Hello everyone!

I am 5 months pregnant, and my wife and I are having a hard time agreeing. After weeks of "arguing", we decided to forget about all the previous names suggested before and make a new list.
I absolutely hate all the names she wrote down :

  • Bradleigh ( her favourite)
  • Dallas
  • Paris
  • Lisandry
  • Helen ( The only one I like)

Whereas my favourite names are:

  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it)
  • Dahlia
  • Neva

She is so sure, those are pretty names. Pleaaase help, she'll be reading all the comments!

Helen is the name of an 80 year old. All of her names are terrible.

hattie43 · 13/12/2023 04:44

RIP up your list and ask a trusted friend to name the child sensibly .
Neither of you seem to be able to choose nice names.

honeysuckleweeks · 13/12/2023 05:33

OP . How were you thinking of pronouncing "Neva"?
Never seems the only option.
Or was it Neevah like beaver?
Honestly confused what you meant.
Otherwise : Nova, Neave, Niamh, Naomi, Natalie . Pretty much anything but Neva or Bradleigh!

garlictwist · 13/12/2023 05:46

I don't like any of your choices but your wife's are worse. Helen is a weird outlier in what sound like country and western virgin cowgirl names.

@Demainsdeslaube

Emma is the only one I could live with.

Helen is ok if you're giving birth to a middle aged woman.

I really dislike the others.

Have you considered using the baby name Apps?

I love Elodie.

i could make done suggestions, but they'd all be a million miles away from both your lists, I think it would be pointless.

Is the father on the scene? Could you ask him?

Euhm, no. It's an unknown sperm donor.

Honestly, I found other no-so-subtle comments hilarious, but this one is just plain rude and bitchy.

But thanks.

Sorry, another one who doesn't like any of them other than Helen.

SequinsandStiIettos · 13/12/2023 06:18
  • Bradleigh ( her favourite) - awful
  • Dallas - not keen at all, have only heard of Bryce Dallas Howard
  • Paris - okay but Paris Hilton, Paris Lees
  • Lisandry - sounds like an illness
  • Helen ( The only one I like) - timeless, classic
  • Romy ( She likes it but not love it) - it's okay
  • Dahlia - Black Dahlia
  • Neva - Never! Xmas Wink

Helen (or Helena/Ellen/Elena/Eleanor)

GoatsInBoats · 13/12/2023 06:20

The ideas so far aren’t great, OP, but you have plenty of time. Is this your first baby? Discussing names for our DD felt very random when being pregnant felt like something other people did!

I like Christina/Cristina, I love Christie as a nn.

Would it help to discuss with your wife what you definitely don’t want in terms of vibe eg frilly/unisex/surnamey/monarch names? That might help you both get in the same zone.

SpringIntoChaos · 13/12/2023 06:38

Well the only thing these two lists have proved, is that your poor child is going to have some god awful name. They are both dire...except for Helen which is at least ok.

Where are you both going for inspiration? Because I'd ditch that place and stop trying to outdo each other with your 'we are so quirky' choices. This is an actual human being that you are naming...not a tortoise!

terraced · 13/12/2023 06:42

Helen is nice. The others are awful.

Sleepsleepsleep123 · 13/12/2023 06:44

Apart from Helen, which is quite nice, her names are tacky stripper names. Like truly, truly horrible.

Of yours, Romy is the best.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 13/12/2023 06:52

Get yourselves a baby names book for Christmas - all a bit yooneek for me!!

scaffoldingsoloud · 13/12/2023 06:54

Demainsdeslaube · 12/12/2023 21:39

She is not pregnant, I am. But we want 2 children, so she will be the next one to be "pushing the watermelon out".

We are two women, if that wasn't clear. So I don't understand why you are talking about last names? There's no hetero dynamic here.

The baby will have both of our names.

What's a hetero dynamic

Agapornis · 13/12/2023 07:04

What about something to match your own lovely mainland European names? (French and Dutch/Scandinavian?) Have a look at the top 50 of some other countries.
Your boys name choices do have nice strong girls equivalents - Clementina and Levina.

chipshopElvis · 13/12/2023 07:05

Lisandry?! Is that misandry with an L? As others have said Helen and Romy are fine but you can both probably come up with something nicer!

Rosscameasdoody · 13/12/2023 07:44

HMW1906 · 13/12/2023 03:02

Bradley is you spell it properly…spelling it the way your wife has suggested is basically setting your child up for having to correct the spelling for his entire life.

is Lisandry even a name???

Other Bradley (spelt properly) and Helen (although a bit dated maybe) they’re all pretty awful.

I think they’re intending Bradleigh as the female version of Bradley. Still awful though !!

user1492757084 · 13/12/2023 07:46

Helen I love.
Do either of you like ..
Hebe
Sandrine
Victoria
Lisa
Phryne - like Miss Fisher
Alice

Rosscameasdoody · 13/12/2023 07:49

Bananabreadandstrawberries · 13/12/2023 00:22

I think everyone gets that you are lesbians?

It doesn’t matter anyway, unless you choose Lisandry 😂😂😂😂

Clearly not everyone gets that they are lesbians because they are assuming OP’s wife is pregnant when she’s already said she is the one carrying the baby.

Rosscameasdoody · 13/12/2023 07:56

How about Mabel. Old fashioned but I’ve always thought it was pretty. Same for Matilda.

ChanelNo19EDT · 13/12/2023 07:57

Demainsdeslaube · 13/12/2023 00:33

Élodie and Johanna :)

Your own names are nice, what about Diana!? too much?
@Demainsdeslaube so what did you think of my suggestions? Not much I 'm guessing (Leigh, Lois, Della, Delia, Maeve. I like Romy the best from your combined list, so was trying to find some potential overlap between your two lists) Thought of another, Magaly. It seems to have some of the hard sound of Bradleigh but ends in ly so might appeal to somebody who likes Romy

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 13/12/2023 07:58

OP, if your wife really wants the name Lysandry after a family member, could you not consider it as a middle name ?

BlazingJune · 13/12/2023 07:58

The only women I know who are called Helen are friends who are in their 60s (and 70s). It seemed to peak at popularity in the 1950s-60s.

I know names come and go but ..........................

ChanelNo19EDT · 13/12/2023 08:11

I live in a village in the country previously known as holy catholic Ireland and I understood immediately that this couple is two women!! They still have the same issue, making their tastes merge.

Also, can I say, who on earth thinks that there is one way to spell Christina, yes, Christina is the English way, but the entire country of Spain spells it Cristina, also probably but not certain Portugal and Romania, so all of South America would use Cristina. I can just hear Creesteeneeta being called out! Ah, cute.

Then less sure of this part of the world but I think Khrystyna the Ukrainian version, Kristiina in Finland apparently, Krystyna in Poland............ but ''one way'' Xmas Grin
